Harris, Joan
Joan Harris passed away after a battle with cancer on April 22, 2011 at the Creston Valley Hospital at the age of 61 years.
Joan was born to parents Nona and Elwood Harris on November 16, 1949 in Cranbrook, B.C.
She will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by her parents Nona and Elwood Harris and her brother Jack Harris.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held Friday April 29, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the G. F. Oliver Funeral Chapel Creston, B.C. with Reverend Gwen Brown officiating.
Valerie Louise (Knight) Harris
Valerie (Val) Louise Harris, a long-time resident of Creston, passed away suddenly on Tuesday April 5, 2011 at the age of 69.
Born in Victoria, Val moved to Creston at the age of eight with her parents, William and Doris Knight, where her father owned and operated Creston Shoe Re Nu.
After graduating from Prince Charles High School in 1959, she attended the University of Victoria where she obtained her elementary teaching certificate. Val then taught school for 17 years in Prince George, Surrey, Cranbrook, and Creston.
In 1979, Val returned to Creston to marry long-time resident Ronald Peter Harris and raise her family. No matter how busy, she always made time for family events and was the source of family news and history – the hub of the family.
Val will be remembered as someone who was always ready to lend a hand whenever needed. As an active member of several organizations in the community she was fondly referred to as ‘Invaluable Val’. Often she could be found placing posters, writing minutes, and performing a variety of other duties for Wildsight (formerly East Kootenay Environmental Society), P.A.W.S., Class of ‘59 Reunion Committee, Trinity United Church, PCSS band parents, and many others.
Val is survived by her husband Ronald Peter Harris; children Michael Martell, Leanne Harris, and Lyle Harris; brother Doug Knight and his wife Roberta; and many beloved pets.
Her funeral service was held on Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at the Trinity United Church with interment at the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Erickson, B.C. Valerie’s deep involvement with family and friends, compassion for all living things, and presence in the community will be missed.
Patton-Standen, Wesley
It is with sad hearts that we are informing you of the passing of our son, Wesley T. Patton-Standen on May 25th, 2011 at the Creston Valley Hospital with family by his side. Wesley was born February 15th, 1992 at Calgary, Alberta.
In September of 1993, he moved to Creston with his mother and older sister Melissa. In 1994, Dad Don joined the family and in 1998, the union was made official, with Wesley being the ring bearer. Little sister Rebecca
"Becca" was born in 2003. Wesley enjoyed many laughs with his sisters and enjoyed bugging them as many brothers do.
With the aid of his computer, Wesley was able to “talk “and he enjoyed “reading” stories to the kids at First Steps Daycare. Spending Thursday mornings with the residents of Crestview Manor was a highlight of his week. Wesley also enjoyed some of the activities at Cresteramics.
During his downtime, Wesley like to chillax on his bed listening to music and stories. He was reading the Inkheart Series before his passing. Wesley also enjoyed riding on the back of his mom’s quad and cruising around Stump Flats.
He was predeceased by his grandpa Curtis Blaine Smith and grandma Patricia Ann Standen. Wesley will be dearly missed by his parents Roxanne and Don Standen, sisters Melissa and Rebecca, gramma June Smith, grampa Harold Standen, great gramma Miriam Standen, uncles, aunts and cousins, Brandon, Travis, Dustin and Terra ( Luke and Isabella ) Smith, Larry and Cathy ( Tyler and Dana ), Wayne and Deb (Colton ) Standen, and numerous family members and friends.
The Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday June 4th, 2011 at 2:00 pm at the Royal Canadian Legion Br# 29 Hall

Barrette, Susan
Susan Fay Barrette passed away after a six month battle with cancer on May 25, 2011 at the age of 67 years.
Susan was born to parents Tressa and Hartley Steward on December 29, 1943 in Prince Albert, SK. She married Norm Barrette on July 28, 1962 in Timmins, ON and continued living there to raise their three children for the next fifteen years. They moved to the Slocan Valley in 1977 after winning $ 10,000.00 in the Ontario Lottery. Susan worked mostly clerical jobs throughout her life and she also fostered thirteen children/teenagers in the Slocan Valley during a three year period. Susan and her family made Creston their home in the summer of 1981. She and Norm moved to Victoria in 1988 where she was employed with the B.C. Government; Ministry of Finance and then returned to Creston for early retirement in 1996.
Susan was a born-again believer of Jesus Christ since 1977 and her life was a testament of faith to all. She was a much involved member of Valley View Baptist Church and loved her church family dearly.
Susan loved knitting with a passion and bestowed many a gift on her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and other family and friends. She also knit for charity and did special orders; she was an expert and flawless artisan in this area.
She held the position of secretary/treasurer for the Creston Valley Fall Fair for three years, enjoying it immensely. Garage saling and second hand store shopping with her daughters and grand-daughters was something she participated in with great fervor, teaching us all to be very practical in our spending.
Susan was predeceased by her parents Tressa and Hartley Steward and by her brother Sid Steward.
She will be dearly missed by her husband Norm Barrette; children Paul (Diana) Barrette of Victoria, B.C., Terri-Lynn Barrette of Creston, B.C. and Laurie (Tom) Morris of Creston, BC; grandchildren Christi-Ann, Jilleen and Taylor of Calgary, AB, Nathan, Steven and David of Creston, B.C. and Nicole and Joel of Victoria, BC; great-grandchildren Aniah and Ryder; sister Linda (Barry) Steward of Creston, BC; brother Dinny (Mary) Steward of Toronto, ON.
A Funeral Service was held on Saturday May 28, 2011 at 2:30 p.m. at the G. F. Oliver Funeral Chapel with Pastor Jeff Friesen officiating. Interment followed at the Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erickson, B.C.
Hauser, Sylvia
Sylvia Lucillia Hauser passed away on April 5, 2011 in Creston, B.C. at the age of 89 years.
Sylvia was born on May 27, 1921 to parents Sorah and Edward Emmons in Lafleche, Saskatchewan.
Sylvia married Frank Hauser on July 31, 1947 in Saskatchewan. They moved to British Columbia with their two sons, Lloyd and Darwin, in 1962 and a couple years later settled in Canyon, B.C., where she lived the remainder of her life.
Sylvia loved her dahlias and gardening; she market gardened for many years. She also really loved the gorgeous trees of B.C. Sylvia enjoyed playing cards and spending time with the family, especially her grandsons Kurtis and Jamie.
Sylvia was predeceased by her parents Sorah and Ed Emmons; son Lloyd; husband Frank; brothers Wesley and Alvin; and sister-in-law Annette.
She will be dearly missed by her son Darwin (Shelly); grandsons Kurtis and Jamie; brother Raymond (Margaret); sisters Goldie (Alfred), Alma and Wilma; along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
The Funeral Service was held Monday April 11, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the G. F. Oliver Funeral Chapel with Dr. Anjanee Gyan-Dyck officiating. Interment to follow at the Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erickson, B.C.

Hine, Eva
Eva Frances Alvirda Hine (nee Phillips) passed away with her family by her side on April 1, 2011 in the Swan Valley Lodge at Creston, B.C., at the age of 91 years.
Eva was born in Hazenmore, Saskatchewan to parents Frances and Robert Phillips on October 31, 1919.
Eva married Edwin Hine on April 24, 1940 in Creston, BC
She was a member of the Trinity United Church and the Trinity Untied Church Women’s Group.
Eva was predeceased by her parents Frances and Robert Phillips; her husband Edwin Hine; grand daughter Cindy; great-grand daughter Jackie; son-in-law Paul Douville; sister Reetha and brother-in-law Albert Montgomery; brother Gerald and sister-in-law Evelyn Phillips; brother Norman Phillips; sister-in-law Edith Phillips; nephew Bob Montgomery and niece Sharon Phillips.
She will be lovingly remembered by her daughters Carol Douville and Louise (George) Rejman; Son Gary (Edna) Hine; daughters Donna Anderson and Kay (Dean) Lewis; eighteen grandchildren and twenty-three great-grandchildren.
The Funeral Service was held on Saturday April 9, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at the Trinity United Church with Pastor Harry Haberstock officiating.
