Cherowka, William (Bill) Sr.
William ( Bill ) Cherowka Sr., passed away on May 23rd, 2011 at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital, Cranbeook, B.C. at the age of 87 years, after a lengthy illness.
Bill was born March 8th, 1924 at Shell Valley, Manitoba to
Eunice and Kost Cherowka, where he received his formal education. He was a self motivated individual and was self employed in the construction industry most of his working life. Bill married Anna Dyck on February 11th, 1951 at Holmfield, Manitoba raising three children. He enjoyed fishing and outdoors.
He was predeceased by brothers George, Mike, John and sister Mary.
Bill will be dearly missed by his wife Anna, son Al ( Jackie ) of Creston, daughter Sharon-Colleen ( Dave ) Kiehlbauch of Creston and daughter Lorna ( Keith ) McColm of Cranbrook; 9 grandchildren, 14.5 great-grandchildren and sister Ann of Windsor, ON and numerous nieces and nephews.
The private family funeral service was held on Saturday May 28th, 2001 at 11:00 at the G.F. Oliver Funeral Chapel with Pastor Brian Atmore officiating. Interment followed at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erickson, BC

Oliver, George F.
George Fulton Oliver passed away suddenly on Tuesday July 12, 2011 at the age of 86 years in the Creston Valley Hospital with family by his side.
George was born in Blairmore, AB to parents William and Anna Oliver. He attended elementary and secondary school in Blairmore, AB and attended the University of Alberta for Mortuary Science.
George grew up on the family dairy in Blairmore, AB, where he worked until 1949. George met his loving wife of 61 years Norma (nee Foster) at a local dance in Blairmore and they married in 1950. Norma and George were married in Boston, Massachusetts, but returned to settle in western Canada. George then studied mortuary science and served his apprenticeship at Cullham Funeral Home in Blairmore until moving to the Creston Valley in 1956. Norma and George took up residence in Lister, B.C. and founded the G.F. Oliver Funeral Chapel in 1957. George served the community of Creston, B.C. and area for over 50 years. George was a member of the United Church of Canada, the Masonic Lodge #54, the Creston Valley Shrine Club, Rotary Club and School Board. George also served as the President of the Creston Valley Blossom festival for a year and was a strong supporter of the Kootenay First Nations Band and their local traditions. He was the recipient of the Citizen of the Year award in 1983. George was an avid fresh water and ice fisherman, a recreational curler and a fond traveler, Hawaii being his preferred vacation destination.
George was predeceased by his sisters Rose, Marion and Jean and brother Hugh.
George will be dearly missed by his wife Norma; son Robert Oliver; daughters Rhonda (Rob) Pompu, Cheryl (Dennis) Kemle; five grandchildren Kayla, Brad, Alicia, Gillian and Derek, as well as numerous family members and many friends.
The Celebration of George’s life was held on Monday July 18, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the G.F. Oliver Funeral Chapel Ltd. with Pastor Harry Haberstock officiating.
Cremation to follow the service with Entombment at the Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erickson, B.C. to be held at a later date.

Tate, Terri Ann
Terri Ann Tate passed away on July 9, 2011 in Creston, B.C. after a long battle with cancer.
Terri was born on October 30, 1957 in Iserlohn, Germany where her father served in the Canadian Armed Forces. She came to Canada as an infant and was raised in Edmonton, Calgary, Regina and Yorkton.
Terri’s love for people lead to work as a caregiver for the handicapped and to work for Cresteramics. Terri had a very special bond with children. Her hobbies included fishing, camping, yard sales and anything to do with Christmas, her favorite time of year.
Terri was predeceased by her partner, Grant Glazier and her parents Ken and Doreen Tate. She is survived by her son Shelby, brothers Steve (Cecile) and Randy (Sandy) plus aunts, uncles, numerous nieces & nephews and many friends. Special thanks to Terri’s very special friends: Karen, Sharla, Linda, Shelley, Charles, Haley, Kena and aunt Maureen who shared Terri’s last week with her.
In keeping with Terri’s wish for people to celebrate her life more than mourn her death, a gathering for family and friends will be held Saturday, July 30th, 2011 at Creston Legion Hall from 2:00 to 5:00 pm.

Leskiw, Norma Jean
Norma Jean Leskiw, age 76, passed away on July 12, 2011 in Creston after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born on a farm in Moosomin, Saskatchewan on March 26, 1935. In 1958 she married Steve Leskiw in the Moosomin United Church.
Norma Jean was predeceased by a brother and sister. She is survived by her husband Steve, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A private family graveside service will take place in Saskatchewan at a later date.
Van Ruyskensvelde, Dale
Dale Van Ruyskensvelde passed away September 13, 2011 after a long battle with cancer in Crawford Bay, B.C. at the age of 74 years.
Dale was born to parents Gladys and Oscar on October 17, 1936 in Swift Current, SK.
Dale married Lorraine on September 1, 1962 in Crawford Bay, B.C.
Dale was a truck driver by trade but in his spare time he enjoyed numerous outdoor activities. Some of which included fishing, hunting, gardening, getting firewood and picking huckleberries.
Dale was predeceased by his parents Gladys and Oscar Roger Van Ruyskensvelde.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Lorraine; daughter Cynthia; sons Allan, Bretty (Christy) and Todd (Kelly); brother Melvin and grandchildren Marissa, Zachery, Jacob, Erich, Kent, Adina, Travis, Neva and Cody.
A Celebration of Life gathering to be held at a later date.
MARY ISABEL MESSINGER (nee Ross)
November 21st, 1919 - September 6th, 2011
Mary Messinger passed away on September 6th with her family by her side. She will always be remembered for her graciousness, strength, love and devotion to her family. Mary was born in Creston November 21st, 1919 to Thomas and Maude Ross. She was a granddaughter of William and Jane Huscroft pioneers of the Creston Valley. She received her education in Huscroft and Creston.
Her first job was at a bakery on the Creston main street where Panago’s is today. She later worked in her uncle’s Mercantile store where Creston Bakery is now located. She often commented on the hitching poles at the front of the Merc for tying horse drawn wagons to. During WWII to traveled east to London, Ontario to work. Returning to Creston she married Charles Lane Messinger, December 27th, 1945.
Early on Mary was a home maker for her large family. Her energy seemed endless as she kept a large garden, milked cows, sewed and knitted clothes and cooked meals. There was always room for one more visiting friend at her dinner table. As the children grew older Mary worked at Gordon Alger’s shoe store and in 1968 joined Lane in the operation of the Shell wholesale fuel business. In 1972 after Lane’s sudden death, Mary became the first female Shell agent in Canada. In 1973 she sold the business to her son Casey and continued to do the company books until her retirement in 1981.
Mary led an active life. An avid gardener and reader, excellent bridge player and competitive swimmer in the B.C. Senior Games. She knitted and sewed clothes for her children and grand children. A member of many community groups; Presbyterian Ladies, Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile, a Library and Museum volunteer. Her abiding passion was travel. She took trips to Europe, Japan, Thailand, China, Australia, Costa Rica and throughout the USA. She particularly enjoyed her many trips to Mexico with her sister-in-law, Betty Ross and her sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Johnny Salvador.
Mary was predeceased by her parents Maude and Thomas Ross, husband Lane, and her siblings; Jack, Maude, Jane, Thomas, Bruce, Betty and Corita. She is survived by her daughters; Judith Harringa, Shelley (Denis) Hellard, Renee (Michael) Maddess, Brenda (Philip) MacDonald, Kim (Gerard) Santucci, Gillian Messinger; by her son Charles (Charlotte) Messinger; 13 grandchildren; Katheryn, Mark, Casey, Kayleen, Matthew, Amy, Brent, Darin, Chelsea, Sarah, Leah, Kelsey and Charlie; 7 great-grandchildren; Christina, John, EveLena, Maria, Lane, Maeve and Adelyn.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Marie Edwards at Lilac House for her loving care of our mother,
Dr. Sidney Kettner and later Dr. Daile Hoffman, and the Creston Valley Hospital nursing staff.
