Lever, Marjorie Louise Sunday, 30 Mar 2008
Courtenay, BC
January 15, 1909 - March 30, 2008
Marjorie has gently passed away after living a very full 99 years. She is remembered by her 5 children, 8 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great-grandchildren and a niece and nephew. She was pre-deceased by 1 grandson. We remember her as a warm, independent, family oriented person who enjoyed pottery, painting and gardening activities.
Born in Hyderabad, India, she came to Canada from Britain in 1919 with her parents and two sisters. She lived and went to school in Comox and worked in the telephone office in Courtenay. Along with Sid Williams and others she was an early member of the mountaineering club, hiking the many trails of the Forbidden Plateau area. In 1934 she married Thomas Lever and went to live in a logging camp on Great Central Lake. Then in 1939 they with the two eldest children moved to the Lever farm at Grantham, and she had three more children. There she made a home with her family and lived for most of the rest of her life. The Lever ranch held a special place in her heart; generations have been raised there and all the relatives were welcomed. After the passing of her husband Tom in 1977, Marjorie continued to lead a full life with volunteer work at the Evergreen Senior Centre, traveling, church, and family activities.
Mom was very thankful to Dr. Reggler and to all the staff of the Glacier View Lodge for the loving care and kindness given to her. She requested that donations in her memory be made to Glacier View Lodge, 2450 Back Rd., Courtenay, BC V9N 9G8. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2008 at 2:00 pm at Comox Valley Funeral Home, 1101 Ryan Rd., Courtenay.

Kotcher, Jean Maria Sunday, 30 Mar 2008
Courtenay, BC
July 19, 1947 – March 30, 2008
On March 30, 2008, Jean, loving mother, devoted wife, treasured mother-in-law, caring Nana, sister, dear friend, teacher, and inspiration to many, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family. Born in Burbank, California and resettled in British Columbia, Jean made the Comox Valley her home for over thirty years. An inspiring and nurturing teacher, Jean taught many children not only how to read and write, but also how to understand the world, with openness and curiosity, through life’s ups and downs. A great supporter of the teaching profession, she served as President of the Courtenay District Teacher’s Association for six years. Jean, a skilled mediator, also worked with the British Columbia Teacher’s Federation Internal Mediation Service for several years. Jean had a special gift for encouraging all creatures, big and small. She loved nature, gardening, photography, walking, and being outdoors. She will be with all of us when we garden, when we walk, and when we inspire and love each other as she did throughout her life. Jean lived life with the energy and passion of one who is adventurous and loving. Her strength of spirit, enthusiasm for life, and uncompromising search for happiness was and will always be an inspiration to all of us. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to UNICEF or the charity of your choice. At Jean’s request, a private memorial will be held for her at her home.

YELLAND, Jean Patricia Thursday, 06 Sep 2007
Parksville, BC
We announce with sadness the passing our mother, on September 6, 2007, at The Gardens at Qualicum Beach, after a battle with cancer.
Born in Vancouver on November 28, 1920, she is pre-deceased by her brothers E.C. (Bud) Laing, and Ronald Laing. She is survived by brothers Robert Laing and Dennis Laing, both of Surrey, sister Yvonne Smyth, of Roatan, Honduras, and numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her sons Gordon (Sue), and Doug (Peggy), and grandchildren Michael, Jennifer, and Robbie.
Jean grew up in Vancouver, and moved to Ottawa at the start of the war to work for the Ministry of Defence in the records department. After the war, she returned to Vancouver, and worked as a legal secretary for several years at the Vancouver City Hall. Always ready to try a bit of adventure, Jean went to Kitimat in the early 50’s, and worked as a secretary at the smelter offices there, when the town and the smelter were just being built. She returned to Vancouver, and in 1956 married Ken. After a few years living in the Lower Mainland, the family moved back to Kitimat for fours years, before coming to Parksville in 1969.
Jean lived in the Parksville/Qualicum area ever since, raising her family and keeping busy volunteering with several local organizations and causes. She worked with the Nanaimo Hospital Auxiliary for many years, serving as president for a time.
Jean loved to meet people, and always made an effort to keep in touch with friends and family, no matter where they lived, whether next-door, or on the other side of the world. She also enjoyed doing crafts, including knitting, crochet, painting and beadwork. The family would like to thank the staff at Trillium Lodge, and The Gardens at Qualicum Beach for their excellent care and kindness.
Jean was a great mother, grandmother, wife, and friend, and will be remembered and missed by family and friends.
A service to celebrate Jean’s life will be held on Saturday, October 27, at 1:00 p.m. at Yates Funeral Chapel, 1000 Allsworth Road, Parksville. Reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, a donation to the B.C. Cancer Agency in Jean’s name would be appreciated.
