Lori Anna Marie Plouffe
Lori Anna Marie Plouffe, born October 6, 1954 beloved wife of Lucien Plouffe of Brandon, MB, lost her battle with cancer and passed away peacefully at the Assiniboine Center in Brandon, MB. on January 16, 2013 surrounded by her family.
Lori leaves to mourn her passing her husband Lucien, daughters Jennifer (Brandon, MB), Jann (Wpg., MB), Alison (Wpg., MB), and her sons Martin (Kitchener, ON), Gerald (Wpg., MB), their spouses, 11 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
Donations can be made to the cancer society in her honor for those of you who wish too.
George Lawford
George Lawford passed into the presence of his Lord from the Portage General Hospital on June 5, 2013 at approximately 7:30 PM.
He had been born more than 95 years earlier in Gladstone, Manitoba on April 29, 1918,
He spent the first 20 years with his family living on a farm north of Austin in the Pine Creek area.
During this time he had a life-changing experience as he accepted the gospel message that was brought to the area by evangelists.
During this period he also met Mary (nee Ronald) whom he married and lived with for the next 65 years.
Shortly after their marriage he responded to the summons to go to war by joining the Medical Corps of the Canadian Army.
For the next two years he served overseas (England, Holland, Belgium and finally western Germany) until the end of World War 2.
After returning to Canada in December 1945 he settled in the area of Drake Saskatchewan where he farmed and began a family with a son (Richard).
In 1953 he moved his family to Edwin Manitoba where he owned and operated the Edwin General Store.
After a successful but exhausting period he moved to Portage la Prairie where he undertook psychiatric nursing and began work with the Manitoba Development Centre (then known as the Manitoba School), first on the wards and then in the stores.
Soon after this move Marilyn (Cote) became part of the family.
He continued here until 1983 when he retired. In 1995 he moved into Dalton Estates where he lived with Mary until her passing in 2005.
The following year he married another Dalton Estate resident, Phyllis (nee Leader, Bowden, Sercombe) and continued life there until he entered the hospital on April 1, 2013.
George was a faithful attendee at the Portage First Street Gospel Hall during his 60 years in the Portage area.
His hobbies included farming and in later years driving, Tim Hortons and dining out.
He will be remembered as a patient mild-mannered man who through his lifetime showed kindness to many people.
George is survived by his wife Phyllis, his son Richard (Barbara), his daughter Marilyn (Rene) with their foster daughter Dorothy and by Ruth, Agnes, Don, Lawrence, Marilyn, Yvonne, Diane, Karen.
Also five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his only brother James of B.C., and one grandson Mike in 2002.
The funeral will be held in the First Street Gospel Hall 102 First Street N.W. Portage la Prairie at 1:30 PM on Tuesday, June 11.
Interment will follow in the family plot in Evergreen memorial Gardens.
Viewing will take place on Monday, June 10 from 7 – 9 p.m. in the Gospel Hall.

Lloyda May MacDonald
On Saturday, May 25, 2013 at the Lion’s Prairie Manor, Portage la Prairie Lloyda MacDonald passed away at he age of 86 years.
Memorial Tea will be held on Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at the Herman Prior Centre from 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. all friends are welcome.

Joyce Eleanor Simpson
With heavy hearts, the Simpson family announces the passing of Joyce on Thursday, May 23, 2013 at the Portage & District General Hospital, with her family by her side.
Joyce was born in Portage la Prairie on October 28, 1932 where she grew up and received her education.
On November 14, 1951 she married Thomas Montague (Monty) Simpson and the city girl moved to the Simpson Family farm.
She worked along side her husband doing chores and helping neighbours in the district.
In her spare time she enjoyed curling, gardening, crossword, jumble puzzles and her love of cats.
In 1985 Monty and Joyce moved to Portage la Prairie and Joyce worked as a sales clerk for Ralph’s Department Store, Stylerite, Walmart and Sears.
She was a Life Member of the Women’s Auxiliary of the A. N. & A. F. Veteran’s Association of Canada and served two terms as the President.
Left to mourn her passing are her loving husband of over 61 years, Monty, daughter Jackie (Garry) Cleaver, grandchildren Wayne, Brian and Stacy; son Murray (Jackie), grandchildren Brett (Julie), Bradley (Robyn) and Will; daughter Joan Irwin, grandson Brandon; daughter Michelle (Carleton) Jack, grandchildren Devon and Janine and great-grandchildren Scott and Tyson Wieler, Leah and Tara Cleaver, Trace Simpson, Ava and Emma Simpson; sisters-in-laws: Jean Gibbs (John McLean) and Nora Hughes, brother-in-law Bill Simpson and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents Wilfred and Ellen Nowell and brother Charles Murray Nowell and wife Gay, brother-in-laws: Reg Gibbs and Walter Hughes; sister-in-law Edyth Simpson.
The family would like to thank all the Doctors and Nurses at the Portage General Hospital for their wonderful care.
Funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 30, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. in the Herman Prior Centre with a reception to follow.

Andrew Bergsma
Andrew Egbert Bergsma passed away peacefully on the 17th of May, 2013 at the age of 86.
He was surrounded by his family and is survived by his 5 children; Stephen, Daniel, Priscilla, Rhoda and Mareshah, their spouses and 14 grandchildren.
Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on the 16th of March, 1927, his family relocated to Vancouver, B.C. at the age of 5 months, where he grew up and graduated from high school.
He graduated from Calvin College in Grande Rapids, Michigan in 1951 with a Bachelor of Arts and intended to pursue a career in criminology.
That all changed on October 11, 1951, when Andrew became a born-again Christian, and dedicated his life to the Lord Jesus and spreading the Gospel.
His calling took him all over the world, and while in Holland he met Akke Geertsma.
Andrew and Akke were married on October 10th, 1973 and started a family of 5 children.
In 1979, the Bergsma family moved back to Canada. Moves to Dawson Creek B.C., Terrace B.C. and back to Dawson Creek B.C. would follow.
In 1992, Andrew lost Akke to cancer, and became a single parent to his 5 children.
They relocated to Manitoba in 1994 and he lived in Portage la Prairie and Winnipeg until his passing to be with His Lord and Saviour.
Andrew is remembered as a man of integrity, whose love of the Lord Jesus and his passion for the Gospel never wavered.
He was an amazing husband and father, and was an example to aspire to.
While frugal with himself, he was incredibly generous to everyone else, and left an impression on everyone he met.
His was a life of purpose-lived for the Lord. He will always be missed and never forgotten.
Funeral service was held on Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. in the Meyers, Norris Penny Building with Mr. Jack Gould and Mr. Ross Vanstone giving the gospel message.
Private family interment was in Hillside Cemetery.

William Roy Hodge
On Sunday, May 12, 2013 at the MacGregor Health Centre, MacGregor, MB, Roy Hodge, widow of the late Gwen Hodge, passed away at the age of 90 years.
Roy was born in the R. M. of North Norfolk. Son of the late John and Amy Hodge.
He received his education at he MacGrgor School and as a very young person began a life long love of farming.
In 1947 he married the former Gwen Ormiston and together they farmed until Gwen’s passing in 2006.
Roy continued on the family farm until his health failed and he moved to the MacGregor Care Home in 2009 where he has since resided.
Roy was a popular school bus driver from 1952 until 1990, first as a private contractor and eventually for the Pine Creek School Division.
He and his big yellow bus were a favorite with the students.
He enjoyed square dancing, and old time barn dances as well as card games.
Fishing was his all time favourite pastime and whether catching or eating fish he enjoyed every minute.
Predeceased by his parents, his wife Gwen, one grandson Alexander Terrance Hodge in 2003, one brother-in-law Bill Hay, 3 sisters-in-law, Agnes Hodge, Roberta Hodge and Ida Hay.
Roy is survived by one son, Terry (Yvette) and their daughter Tiffany of MacGregor, one daughter Darlene (Carl) Giesbrecht and their children Kevin, Curtis and Kimberley (Ian) of Minetonas, MB, 2 brothers, Jim (Louise)and Oliver and one niece and one nephew.
A grave side funeral service will be held on Friday, May 17, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. in the Beaver Creek Cemetery.

Leslie Bonin Taylor
The family of Les Taylor sadly announce that Les died unexpectedly in the early hours of April 25, 2013, at the Douglas Campbell Lodge, Portage la Prairie.
Les was born in the Portage General Hospital on December 28th, 1936, the sixth of nine children’ born to Frank and Janet Taylor, High Bluff, Manitoba.
Les grew up on the family farm and received his education at Portage Creek School, Portage Collegiate (St. Mary’s la Prairie) and Daniel McIntyre Collegiate in Winnipeg.
He was interested in most sports but especially interested in High School football.
Les retired to his home town from Winnipeg.
One of Les’s main hobbies was creating beautiful and amazingly intricate works of egg-shell art.
As a volunteer driver, he drove cancer patients to Winnipeg and, for many years, was also active in the Portage la Prairie Citizens on Patrol Program ( COPPS).
He was predeceased by his parents and siblings: Jim, Jack, Beth, and Tom.
He is survived by: Step-son, Brian Ross(Vivian) of Brandon (Nicole, Danny); stepdaughter Cindy Scharf (Bryan) of Winnipeg (Lawrence, Leah) great-grandchildren, Eric, Chelsea and Kaidan; brother, Bob, (Lorraine) of Winnipeg; nephew Scott and Sharon Taylor of Kelowna, (Aric, Kaylyn); sister-in-law Penny (Tom); nephew Tim and Kathy Taylor ( Kelsey and Gavin), sister Essie Johnson of Brandon (Vernon); niece Tara Kitt (Dave) Brett, Jordan; niece Dana Templeton(Ken) of Brandon, Taylor, Madison; brother Bill Taylor of Brandon and sister Judy Taylor of Portage la Prairie.
A private grave-side funeral will be held in Hillside Cemetery, Portage la Prairie, at 11:30 am, Friday, May 3rd, 2013.
A memorial tea for family and friends will be held at the Herman Prior Centre, Portage la Prairie, at 1.00pm, Friday, following interment.
Les’s family wish to extend their thanks to the Portage Hospital, extended-care staff, and the staff of the Douglas Campbell Lodge. At his request, cremation has taken place.

Nancy Virginia Kerman
Peacefully on Tuesday, April 16, 2013 at the Portage And District General Hospital, Nancy Kerman, dear sister of Stephen Kerman, passed away surrounded by those who loved her.
Nancy was born in Portage la Prairie, MB. on December 30, 1934 daughter of the late Mary and John Kerman.
She grew up and received her education in Portage la Prairie, graduating the Portage Collegiate Institute.
Following high school she attended the Manitoba Institute of Technology in Winnipeg where she completed her secretarial course.
Her first employment was with Head Office of the North American Life Assurance Co in Winnipeg.
When she was offered a promotion to the company’s offices in Toronto, she declined and instead returned to Portage to assist with her mother’s care.
In Portage la Prairie, Nancy was employed first at Greenberg and Greenberg and later at Christianson and Christianson Law office.
For a short time she worked as an assistant to lawyer Gordon Beauleau until he closed his office and then she operated her own secretarial service until retirement.
During most of her life, Nancy was an ardent antique and memorabilia collector and had a vast knowledge of values and history of many categories of collectable items.
She was a member of the Manitoba Depression Glass Club and the Manitoba Bottle Collector’s Club.
Nancy spent several years as the manager of the antique shop at Central Auction in Portage.
She was also a member of the Portage Horse Club and served as treasurer of the West End Community Hall.
Friday night dances at the hall were a regular event for many years.
As a young person Nancy dedicated many hours to the Coffee House for Youth at First Presbyterian Church where she also sang in the choir for many years.
Her collection of Portage history was an asset that many locals tapped into for research and interest.
Predeceased by her parents and all of her close relatives, Nancy is survived by her brother Stephen and several cousins.
Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, April 24, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. in the Crocus Room of the Herman Prior Centre, 40 Royal Road N. Portage la Prairie.
