February 9, 1923 - April 5, 2009
It is with deep sadness and sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing late Palm Sunday, April 5, 2009 at Holy Family Nursing Home of our dear mother and grandmother in her 87th year.
Mom was born in Eastern Poland (now Ukraine). At the outbreak of World War II, she endured and survived two years of occupation under Stalin’s oppressive Communist regime and then two more years under the Nazis before she and her husband were taken to Germany to work as forced labor until War’s end. In 1950, after five years in a displaced persons refugee camp, she, along with her husband and son finally were accepted by Canada as immigrants on a contract to work on a Manitoba farm. Mom was forever grateful to Canada for giving her and her family the opportunity to live and to work in such a beautiful, free and democratic country.
Although her formal education was permanently interrupted by the War, she succeeded in passing on her love of learning and the importance of a good education to her son.
One could always find her in her favourite place, the kitchen, where she prepared from scratch her legendary stews and soups or baking mouth-watering buns using recipes and techniques learned from a very young age helping her mother. For relaxation, Mom enjoyed reading or listening to music especially if it was Eastern Europe folk songs or opera. In her free time she would knit or crochet and we are beneficiaries of her many beautiful and intricate items which will continue to be a constant expression and reminder of her love, skill and dedication.
Despite the challenges and hardships Mom was never one to complain and always had a smile and an optimistic view. She was always there to comfort, to listen without judgment or criticism and to give thoughtful and constructive advice whenever asked.
Mom was predeceased by her husband (2006) Nicholas. Her memory and spirit will be cherished and live forever in our hearts and mind.
In accordance with Mom’s wishes cremation has taken place and there will be no formal service. At a later date, there will be a private family service and interment of her ashes in the plot beside her husband.
We wish to thank all of the staff at Holy Family for their compassionate care, consideration and devoted service.
