James Micheal McLeod
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden death of James Micheal McLeod at the Health Sciences Center on January 13, 2009 at the age of 47 years.
Jim was predeceased by his father Stewart James McLeod.
Jim leaves to mourn his wife Judite, children Carina, Johnathon, Laurana. His mother Joan, brother John (Judy), sister Tammy (Don), niece Sam, and nephews Mik, Qaum, Michael and Morgan. Also mother-in-law Relinda, brother-in-law Baldwin and many cousins, uncles and aunts, the Balagus, Smith, Gonçalves, Governo, and Gomes families, and friends.
Jim was born in Calgary, AB, and grew up in Surrey, BC. His family moved to Winnipeg in 1981, where he took Graphic Arts at RRCC. He later decided to follow in his father and grand-father’s footsteps and completed the Journeyman Carpenter’s Certificate at RRCC. He worked for various construction companies until he found his niche at HSC. Jim took pride in his work and it showed. He followed up on his work to ensure all staff were satisfied.
Jim was a World War II history buff. Reading countless history books, watching many documentaries, and taking great pride in any opportunity to talk with world war veterans. With this he enjoyed many hours with his dear ASL/CASLA friends battling it out on their game boards.
Astronomy gave him the opportunity to gaze at the beautiful starlit sky. Spending hours identifying the Orion Nebula and his drive to learn from amateur to expert in a few short months. He shared this passion with his son and they enjoyed attending their monthly meetings at the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada at the U of M. Bursting with pride when Johnathon first presented the 10 points about Saturn to the audience.
Country living made Jim realize he had a green thumb and enjoyed gardening. Sharing all the bounty with family, friends, and staff at work. Planting a purple garden patch for Carina and Laurana helping water her especially planted petunias. Johnathon, Laurana, and Daddy enjoyed learning archery together. With the boys hunting for deer and coming home with their stories of success. Jim enjoyed cross country skiing, and cycling with the family at Bird’s Hill, enjoying the outdoors at every possible opportunity.
Music was a common bond with Carina, they both enjoyed listening to Pink Floyd, Ozzy Osborne and Metallica. But diverse Jim also enjoyed his wife’s type of music, Classical and Jazz. Jim enjoyed meeting people and working with all the great staff at HSC and getting to know everyone. Sharing his sharp wit and dry sense of humor with those who would “get it” and smile at those who would not. He was a people person.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, January 17 at Immaculate Conception Church, 181 Austin Street N. with Reverend Father José Eduardo Medeiros, celebrant. Rite of Committal will follow at Assumption Cemetery.

Arthur Kreis
April 15, 1932 – January 2, 2009
Peacefully on Friday January 2nd 2009, Arthur Kreis passed away at the age of 76, with family at his side.
Arthur was born on April 15, 1932 in Rosenfeld, Ukraine. He immigrated to Canada with his parents Lydia and Wilhelm in the fall of 1950. Dad enjoyed many years hunting and fishing with his closest friends and family. He spent many years coaching soccer and 4 years convening soccer. He retired from Westfair Foods in 1993 after 37 years and spent his retirement going on several trips with Frieda to Alaska, Germany and Alberta to visit with family. Dad enjoyed doing daily crosswords and keeping up with the latest sports scores especially the soccer scores. The family always knew not to plan events on Saturday mornings because Dad didn't want to miss watching soccer. Dad would go on daily two hour walks and while on these walks he kept his neighbourhood clean of unwanted bottles and cans. He had a special way of taking care of these unwanted items, neatly stacking and labeling everything. Dad made the best wine which he shared with everyone. Family gatherings were never without Dad's wine and a few prosits.
Opa cherished his grandchildren, they were the light of his life and they in turn cherished their Opa. Dad always felt that his grandchildren could do no wrong and Opa & Oma's house was a free zone where their parents had no say. Dad was a no fuss, no nonsense sort of guy who told it like it was. For those of us that loved and admired him we will always remember how much he loved and admired all of us in return.
Arthur leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife and best friend of 51 years, Frieda; daughter and son- in- law Irmgard & Kelwyn Eklund, son and daughter- in- law Peter & Wanda Kreis; grandchildren Scott (Averie), Tami (Brian), Kaitlyn (Cole), Paxton and Xander; sister Frieda Rothenberger and numerous family and friends in Canada and Europe.
Special thanks to Dr. Harris and her team of Angels at the Grace Hospital CancerCare, The 5th floor staff at the Grace Hospital, Drs. Parham, Inglis and Reyhall for their exceptional care of Dad.
A celebration of Arthur's life will take place on Wednesday January 7, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at Bardal Funeral Home, 843 Sherbrook Street with Pastor Heimo Bachmeyer officiating.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Arthur's memory to CancerCare Manitoba Foundation Inc. 675 McDermot Ave, Rm ON1160, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9.
