Donald M. Lorch
1928 – 2014

In the early morning hours of Saturday, February 8, 2014, Donald Marvin Lorch passed away after a lengthy battle with lung disease while being attended by staff members at Benito Health Centre. Don was 85 years old.
Don was born June 17, 1928, a son of Ford and Lucy (nee Clark) Lorch of Portage La Prairie, Manitoba. He was their youngest child and a brother to Avis and Edward, all deceased.
Don’s earliest years were spent under the influence of the Depression and the impending onset of WW II. Portage La Prairie was a training base and a hub of activity. He shared boyhood memories of hiding in bushes spying on soldiers practicing marching skills, planes landing and tanks rolling down main streets. While the war raged on afar, his life was comprised of early mornings at Portage Creamery and cleaning horse barns in exchange for pocket money, fresh ice cream and horse riding privileges. When the war ended and the soldiers returned home he saw the condition of “those boys” whom he had spied upon and realized just how lucky he was. He thought it might be best to leave and leave the local jobs to those returning home from overseas. So he planned and set out on his own.
Don was hired by CNR Stores and began travelling from post to post. He touched down in Dauphin, Melville and Regina for months at a time. His last stop was at The Pas where he met and married Jean McGinnis in 1956. They set up housekeeping, built their home and had their two children Burna and Glenn.
Don worked hard each and every day to provide for his family. He wanted his children to have an education and opportunity greater than his own.
Don stayed with CNR for twenty years and then decided he wanted a change, but was not sure quite what it was. Being out of a job was unacceptable to him, so while he made up his mind what direction to take, he drove school bus for a couple of years. He was popular with the kids, always had a joke or quick retort for the trouble makers. He was always willing to take those out of town weekend trips with the local high school athletic teams or the hockey teams. The kids liked driver Don and he enjoyed watching them compete. He was never the “drop and leave you” kind of guy and they appreciated that.
When Manfor Pulp and Paper Mill started up in The Pas, Don began the last chapter of his work career in the scale shack. He enjoyed meeting the different truck drivers and listening to their tales and stories. He became life friends with some.
Don retired in 1988, and he and Jean moved to their acreage north of Roblin. He spent hours on his land building their house, doing all the landscaping, planting his trees and looking after the garden. We think he only wanted the acreage so he could get his tractor “LITTLE JOHNNY” and have room for his many fur friends.
In September 2010, Don and Jean moved to Maple Manor in Roblin and then on December 3, 2013 Don was admitted to Benito Health Centre.
Don loved all animals, and no doubt many who have been waiting years for him will meet him at the Rainbow Bridge.
Don was a member of the Elks and the Royal Canadian Legion, and liked curling and watching sports, but most of all he was a wealth of information. He was well informed and up to date on local and world news. If you were considering buying something he could tell you the consumer report rating on almost any product being sold. Had he played board games, he would have cleaned up on any kind of trivia contest. Don loved to learn about different countries and cultures, for his secret desire was to travel.
Don is survived by: his wife of 57 years Jean Lorch of Roblin; his son Glenn Lorch of The Pas; his daughter Burna Lorch (Paul Safonovs) of Winnipeg; his grandchildren; Breanne of Winnipeg and Ryan of Calgary. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
Don’s Funeral Service was held on Thursday, February 13, 2014 at 2:00 PM from Knox United Church in Roblin with Reverend Mark Hammond officiating. Glenn Lorch was the Urn Bearer. Mrs, Betty Wenner led Knox United Church Choir and congregation in singing the hymns “I Come To The Garden Alone” and “Amazing Grace” Selected music was “Hallelujah” by K.D. Lang. Following the service a reception was hosted by the United Church Lunch Committee in the church hall.
The Interment will be held at a later date at Mountview Cemetery, Silverwood, Manitoba.
Thank you is extended to Dr. Aziz, Roblin Health Centre Staff, Joanne Keast and his Home Care Nursing Team, and Benito Health Centre for care and compassion shown Don throughout the years.
Charitable donations may be made in Donald's memory to the following organizations:
Mountview Cemetery Fund, Box 7, Group 45, Roblin, MB R0L 1P0

During their 48 year marriage, Georgie and Joe demonstrated their strong commitment to each other. They embraced new experiences and shared celebrations with family and friends. As a mother, Georgie was always supportive, nurturing and fun loving. Her close relationship with her sister, Dorothy, remained loving and unwavering even through her struggles with her memory loss. In 2004, due to health concerns, Georgie moved to Winnipeg to be closer to her daughter Linda and her family.
Georgie enjoyed knitting, sewing, curling, golfing, her art work and being an active member of the UCW and Royal Purple. She was known for her “Green Thumb” and liked nothing better than to work in her garden. A bouquet of garden flowers was a constant on the kitchen table. Georgie also enjoyed baking and decorating everything from cookies to wedding cakes. She looked forward to visits from her grandchildren; exposing them to new experiences. Georgie saw excitement and pleasure in ordinary day to day events. Her adventurous spirit was evident in her openness to try new things, the many trips that she and Joe shared with others and her outings with dear friends, Evelyn and Doreen. Georgie was the consummate visitor, interested in everyone’s stories, empathetic and willing to offer a helping hand.
A special thank you to the North first floor staff at The Saul and Claribel Simkin Centre for their compassion and caring of Georgie over the past five years.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on October 1, at Deloraine United Church, Deloraine, Manitoba. Interment at Goodlands Cemetery. If desired, donations may be made in Georgie’s memory to The Saul and Claribel Simkin Centre, 1 Falcon Ridge Drive, Winnipeg, Manitoba or the charity of your choice.

Kilmury, Eric Robert

On Thursday, July 28, 2011 Eric died of his injuries in a two vehicle crash just outside of Minot North Dakota.
Eric will be forever loved and missed by his wife of 28 years, Tammy, sons Adam and Bret and chosen daughters Nikki and Danielle; Brother Cliff (Joanne), Brother Wayne (Anna), Sister Brenda (Don Duerksen), Sister Linda (Stewart Mannix), Sister Marlene Preston, Brother Alec (Tanya), Mother in law Dian Garrow-Grant (Bill), Brother in law Dean (Cheryl), Sister in law Jo-Ann (Don Milliken), Brother in law James (Rhonda), Brother in law Tim (Kris) and his many nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his parents Cliff & Joyce Kilmury, Father in law Joe Garrow and niece Patricia Kilmury.
Eric was born on Friday the 13 of May 1960. He never hid the fact that he thought 13 was lucky. He was raised in Boissevain and Whitewater and went to school here as well. From a young age Eric showed his love of vehicles which has grown throughout the years. In Eric’s 51 short years he has owned more vehicles than one person could in a lifetime. To afford this love of cars at the age of fourteen Eric started work at the Boissevain Co-op, at age sixteen and seventeen he worked at Freeman Pontiac, when he was eighteen he worked for Ed Pulver at Boissevain Meat Processors, nineteen and twenty he worked for Bruce McMillan at McMillan Meat Packers. At 21 Eric started a thirty year Career with the Cooperative Retailing System. Eric started in Boissevain Co-op as a Meat Manager Training on April 21, 1981. In Boissevain he was a Meat Manager and then a Grocery Manager. In May of 1990 we moved to Winkler Manitoba as the Food Store Manager and while there he took General Manager training. In 1992 Eric took a position of General Manager in Wadena Saskatchewan. In two years we were moving again to Regina where Eric moved from retail to wholesale and he took on the position of Retail Advisor for Federated Co-op. It took Eric three years this time to get the itch he moved us yet again to Arborg MB where Eric was a General Manager. In 2000 Eric felt he had the opportunity of a life time to move us one last time to Cochrane Alberta where he worked in Calgary for Calgary Co-op. While in Calgary he was the Center Manager for the Original Downtown store, Monterey Square, Village Square, Creekside and Rocky Ridge. Eric was a Center Manager for Calgary Co-op for 10 plus years. On January 1, 2011 Eric started living the dream. Eric and Tammy moved permanently back home to Boissevain and Eric retired from the Co-op, 4 months short of 30 years. With only one month in on the retirement, he was back at it again and this time to fulfill a life time dream of selling cars for a dealership. He approached Chapman Motors in Killarney and with his visible love of vehicle wrote all over him, he was hired. For the last six months he went to PLAY at Chapman’s everyday and never not once did he ever feel he was still working. He said he was just “living the dream.” We would ask him often if he was still having fun and the answer was always with a smile “YES”. I am so sad he couldn’t continue to sell cars until he really did retire, but when I really think about that I’m not sure we would have got him to ever retire because he was truly living his dream.
Eric’s love of cars was very evident but all who knew him knew full well his love for his family was second to none. I fell truly blessed to have spent thirty two years in his arms and in his heart. Out of that love we have two wonderful boys, Adam and Bret and they know their dad wanted a boy so bad he got two. I don’t think other than the day they were born that he was more proud than when they each graduated from High School. I know he was looking forward to the day they would both get married and have children of their own, but that was not meant to be. Eric not only had a special bond with the boys but also with his best friend and brother, Wayne. We spent many times and memories with Wayne and Anna. Eric was also very close to his mother and since her passing he has missed her very much. To Eric each of his siblings and their families were very important and he tried very hard to keep the family ties held tight, like when they were young and growing up.
Eric lived his life to the fullest and never once did he look back on anything with regret. I know if he could say anything to us to make it easier, he would say better start putting first things first, cause when your hour glass runs out of sand you can’t flip it over and start again. Take every breath for what it’s worth. Don’t Blink.
A celebration of Eric’s life was held on August 4th, 2011 at St Paul’s United Church in Boissevain. A private family interment took place before the celebration at Boissevain Cemetery.
Donations in memory of Eric may be made to the Boissevain Morton Foundation.
