Albert Edward Pohl
With aching hearts, we whisper low, “God Bless you Dad, we’ll miss you so.”
We are left to mourn our loss but rejoice in the gift that was our Dad. Albert Pohl faithfully completed his journey on Sunday, September 23rd at the Portage & District General Hospital at the age of 97, following a brief, but valiant struggle with illness.
Dad was born on March 2nd, 1910 in Lloydminster, SK., the eldest son of Albert Henry Pohl and Antonia Louise Bowser. He was raised in the Bear Creek District, attending school at Berton and Bear Creek. He left school at an early age to work on the family farm and bought his own farm in 1937.
He married our Mom, Lillian Elizabeth Schlamb on April 3rd that year. They had five children, losing their first born, daughter Dianne in infancy. Mom and Dad raised four children, Joyce (John), Garry, Rod (Kerry) and Karen (Brent). They lived on the farm in the summers and bought a house in town for the winters.
Dad began doing carpentry during the winters; he was a true craftsman, able to build or repair anything.
Through his children, the family grew by 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. He had their deepest love and respect and in their minds, he was a legend in his own time.
Dad was predeceased by Mom in 1980, Garry in 2006 and son-in-law Ernie in 1995. Dad was blessed when he re-united with his childhood sweetheart, Leona McLaughlin; they shared 16 years of marriage before Leona’s death in 1997.
Dad had the utmost respect for nature and loved fishing with his grandsons, going camping and working in his garden. Having built the original set of bleachers for the Austin Thresherman’s Reunion, Dad was very proud in his retirement years to take part in it and show off the separator he had rebuilt.
His needs were simple and few in later years. We were blessed to find Maria, Dad’s own special angel and caregiver. She enabled us to honor his desire to remain in his own home and live independently. He loved her dearly and she will always have a special place in our hearts.
Dad was a model of dignity, kindness and respect- a gentle man and a true gentleman. His heart was always full of concern and love for his family. He was a genuine “Character” and we will miss his sense of humor, the wit and wisdom and his unique ways of expressing himself. Rest peacefully, Papa, you’ve earned it. So long, Dad.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, September 29, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. in the Gladstone United Church with Rev. Ian Olive officiating. Interment followed in the Gladstone Cemetery.
