Emma Schmidt
July 29, 1924 – November 27, 2007

Mom passed away peacefully with family at her side and Our Lord Jesus Christ waiting for her to come to him.
Emma was born July 29, 1924 in Runneymede, Saskatchewan. She was one of 10 children born to George Schneider Sr. and Katherine Schneider (nee Kiel). She was baptized into God’s family in 1924 and confirmed into the Lutheran Church. She lived her early years with her family on a farm near Runneymede. She attended school in Runneymede and had to walk 4 miles each way. She only completed grade 5 because it was necessary to be boarded out to go to a higher grade. She worked in Winnipeg for a family on Home Street preparing meals and doing housework. She was about 15 years old and after about 6 months got homesick and moved back to Runneymede where she later met her husband Philip Schmidt. Philip lived in Waldersee, Manitoba and drove the Waldersee Lutheran minister to do services at the Runneymede Lutheran Church. After church Philip and the minister were invited to eat at Mom’s parents’ home before their drive back. Mom and Philip married October 20, 1945.
Mom is greatly missed and leaves behind to mourn her passing and to celebrate her life her four daughters; Eileen and husband Jake Born of McCreary and family, Brenda Cameron of Red Deer, Alberta and family, Sally and husband Daniel Verhaeghe of Dauphin and family, and Marlene and husband Bob Gallagher of Lorette, Manitoba and family, 2 sons; Arnold and wife Carolyn of Brandon and family, and Gerald of Winnipeg. Emma leaves 12 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Also left to mourn are her brother John and his wife Kaye of Dowlin, Ontario and their family, sister-in-law Verna Schneider of Amaranth and her family, sister-in-law Marlene Schneider of Portage la Prairie and her family, as well as many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Emma was widowed at a young age and had to raise a young family. She did so by taking on various jobs and with meagre government help. She always put her family first before herself, making sure we always had shelter, clothes, food and spiritual direction. She was proud of her accomplishments as are we, her children. Mom loved to grow a garden and usually had a large one so that she’d have lots for canning. She enjoyed yard work and cut her own grass as long as she could. She always asked about her rose bush after she moved from the house in McCreary.
Emma and her children lived briefly in Tenby and Glenella before moving to McCreary in 1964. Emma had a brief stay in Ste. Rose Gendreau PCH before moving to Dauphin Personal Care Home on October 2005.
While living in McCreary she volunteered at the outdoor skating rink canteen, taught sewing for 4-H and was active in the United Church, helping at the United Church ladies’ booth during rodeo. She worked at Boiteau’s Café, Freddie’s Grill, and at cleaning jobs for the Post Office, Royal Bank, old Municipal Hall, and the United Church.
Emma became a member in full communion of the United Church of Canada within the congregation of Knox United Church in McCreary on May 22, 1988.
She also worked for homecare for several years and really enjoyed helping people. She volunteered at McCreary Personal Care Home and often dressed in costume for fun with her daughter Sally and her friends Edith Neuman, Dorothy Hanes and others. They did square dances for the residences and were invited to perform at the Senior Centre and other locales to entertain.
She enjoyed watching sports, particularly hockey and football. She was a Winnipeg Jet fan until the team moved to Phoenix, and a Blue Bomber fan until her passing.
She was most passionate about watching her grandsons Gregory and Matthew Verhaeghe play hockey. She was very proud of her granddaughter Barb Anderson (nee Born) and how good a piano and organ player she became. Mom always bragged about Barb every chance she got. She would be so happy that Barb is playing for her today. She loved all her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and expressed this love openly. She was a woman of simple means and a heart full of love.
Funeral service was held Saturday, December 1, 2007 at 11:30 a.m. in the Knox United Church, McCreary with Beth McLean, D.M. officiating and granddaughter Barb Anderson (nee Born) presided at the piano. Interment followed in the McCreary Municipal Cemetery. Pallbearers were grandchildren Gregory Verhaeghe, Matthew Verhaeghe, Jonathon Born, Christopher Rogers, Andrea Gallagher and Shaun Gallagher. Honourary Pallbearers were grandchildren Chanda Cameron, Barb Anderson, Angela Carroll, Bradley Cameron, Shawna Holian and Sara Born.
May she rest in peace.

Frederick Power Mowat

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Power Mowat after a brief, but courageous battle with cancer on Saturday, November 24, 2007, surrounded by his family.
Dad was born in Gladstone on August 18, 1928, to Fred and Verta Mowat. After completing his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from the University of Manitoba, he returned to the family farm. He married Joy Olson on July 5, 1952, and together they raised a family and shared a wonderful life together.
Power and Joy loved to travel finding adventure around the world, first together and then with their family. Another passion of Dad’s was fishing with friends and family. For 55 years, we have gathered every summer at Cross Lake, Manitoba to fish, camp, and catch the elusive “Big Jack”. We spent many evenings around the campfire listening to Dad’s stories and spending time with his grandchildren who meant so much to him.
Dad leaves, to cherish his memory, his loving wife Joy, his children, Kevin and Jennifer, Vi and Bob, Jeff and Aileen, his precious grandchildren Jennifer (Mark), Lindsay, Derek and Justin, Stephen (Shawna) and Bryce, and the youngest grandson, Andrew, his beloved sister, Elizabeth Chapman, his treasured sisters-in-law, Mae MacGillvray, Hope (Dan) MacNeil, and Lil (Andy) Andrews, many nieces and nephews, and his life-long Gladstone friends.
Dad exemplified a life of love, family, Community, and Church. He was a man of his word, a true gentleman, and more than a father-a friend and confidante. He was the family strength, the family wisdom, a beacon of light so that we could always find our way home. He was everything that you could want in a husband, a father, a grandfather, a mentor, and a friend.
A Celebration of Power’s life was held on Thursday, November 29, 2007, at 2:00 PM in the Gladstone Christian Fellowship Church with Reverend Ian Olive officiating. Interment followed in the Gladstone Cemetery.
If friends so desire memorial donations may be made to the Gladstone United Church Memorial Fund.
Clarke’s Funeral Home, Gladstone, in care of arrangements.
