SHIRLEY CHUCKO

August 31, 2004

SHIRLEY CHUCKO (nee DOERN) 1934 - 2004 On Sunday, August 29, 2004 at the Health Sciences Centre with her children and companion, Tom by her side, Shirley lost her battle with cancer. Mom was born November 12, 1934 to Otto and Marion Doern (Doskoch). She grew up in the North End and attended Margaret Scott and Isaac Newton schools. She met Ed Chucko, and they were married in 1954. She worked at Brigdens until Kevin was born in 1957. Mom stayed at home to look after children Kevin, Kerry and Marianne. She lost Dad, the love of her life, in 1978. This loss presented challenges that Mom met and overcame without complaint, taking life "One day at a Time". She re-entered the workforce, working at Success Business College. As grandchildren came along, Mom doted on them and looked forward to retiring and spending more time, sharing her love with them. In recent years Mom and her friend and companion, Tom Pickett, took many trips and enjoyed each other and life together. Early this year it was discovered that the cancer she had successfully fought previously, had returned. Although determined to fight again, the cancerous attack was too much to overcome. Predeceased by her parents, husband, and son Kerry, Mom is survived by her friend and companion Tom Pickett; sister Dorothy Chaykowski; sisters-in-law, Eleanor and Vera Chucko; and many nieces and nephews. Her children, Kevin (Debbie), Marianne; and grandchildren, Keith (Krissy), Allyson, Falin and Angus will miss her love very much. The children thank Tom for his unwavering devotion and for ensuring Mom was as comfortable as possible, and Aunty Eleanor and Eileen for their caring. We also acknowledge the efforts of the many physicians involved in Mom's care, especially the nurses and care givers at the Health Sciences Centre, wards GD2 and GH5. Funeral service will be held on Thursday, September 2, at 10:00 a.m., at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. Interment will follow at Elmwood Cemetery. Flowers are gratefully declined, those wishing may make a donation in Mom's memory to CancerCare Manitoba. Mom, Thank you for blessing us with your Values, Love, Friendship, and Caring Spirit. CATHARINE DALTON

August 31, 2004

CATHARINE SIMS DALTON (nee CLARK) Guarded by her faithful Pug, Boodalini, tended by her daughter Pat and devoted caregivers, with consults from her daughter Roberta, the beautiful smile of Catharine dimmed to only a memory on the morning of August 27, 2004. She was surrounded by love and as was her greatest desire, she was in her own home. Born to Dora and Donald Clark on her grandfather's farm in Swan River, MB, mother would spend her youth and early married life in Bowsman, MB. She was employed at the local store, and during the war, became a working mom at Henry Stevens bank. She had very fond memories of her days in the Valley. Married to Robert (Bob) Dalton in 1939, they would live in Bowsman, Russell, Gilbert Plains, Winkler, and Winnipeg, raise a gang of children, Roberta, Thomas, Clark, Patricia, and Kerry and mourn the loss of their baby, John. A mother from the 1940's to the New Millennium, she displayed a truly unconditional love for each child; no one was best. To each one, she taught the basics and then gave them their wings. When her nest became empty, mother went to university. Having declined an opera scholarship in her youth to tend to her ailing mother and care for her young brother, mother was delighted to have the opportunity to attend the University of Winnipeg. Each fall, for over 20 years, mother packed her school bag and went off to thoroughly enjoy her courses, the students and the professors. Catharine was creative and multi-talented. She was an artist, seamstress, writer, and a diva of domestic science. She had a deep appreciation for music, sang in many choirs and filled her home with song. She loved trains and travel. She was a willing volunteer in the community and had an interest in the lives of women and girls worldwide. Catharine loved her home and after the death of her husband her world changed. Fiercely determined to stay in her own home, she would face many challenges. Although her journey was not easy, she would display courage and grace. She was our teacher and led her daughter Pat and caregivers through each step with great patience; usually waiting for them to catch up! Mrs. D's days were filled with love and laughter, music and song, stories, poetry, history, the Swan River Star and Times and CBC radio. There can not have been a greater fan of Stuart McLean and the Vinyl Cafe. There ain't no other like our mother. Be a goodl't and watch out for the bumps, mother! Foxwarren Chapter of the Eastern Star. Life Member. Donations in Catharine's memory may be made to the University of Winnipeg Scholarship Fund, 515 Portage Ave, Winnipeg, MB R3B2E9 or Hospice and Palliative Care Manitoba, 2109 Portage Ave, Winnipeg, MB R3J 0L3. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, September 2 at Crescent Fort Rouge United Church, 525 Wardlaw Ave. at 2:00 p.m. NEIL BARDAL INC. (204) 949-2200
