KATHLEEN ELLEN SHAM On Sunday, August 22, 2004, at the St. Boniface General Hospital, Kathleen passed away at the age of 95 years. In accordance with Kathleen's wishes, no formal funeral service will be held. A private family interment will take place at a later date. HENRY SINGA

HENRY SINGA It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our father and grandfather Henry, on Saturday, August 21, 2004 at the Oakview Place Nursing Home at the age of 92 years. Left to cherish his memory are his daughter Marlene and husband Terry Phillips; grandchildren, Ashleigh, Ryan and Scott (fiancee Andrea), all of Calgary; brother Jim (Jennie) of White Rock, BC; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great- nieces, great-nephews, relatives and friends. Henry was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Martha in 1996; his parents, Wojtko and Mary; brothers, Mike and John; and sisters, Elsie and Lena. Henry had been employed for 40 years with Mitchell Consolidated Stores Ltd. as a Building Superintendent until his retirement at the age of 73. He loved all children, animals and was willing to help anyone who needed him. Henry loved being outdoors and working in his garage doing carpentry, plumbing or electrical projects. He loved to garden which was noticeable by the substantial number of flowers in his yard. Henry enjoyed hunting, fishing or anything else that took him to the country. On Monday, August 30 at 12:30 p.m. Henry's graveside service will be held in Brookside Cemetery, 3001 Notre Dame Ave. For those wishing to attend, please gather at the entrance of the Cemetery at 12:15 p.m. Henry's memorial service will then follow at 1:30 p.m. in the Oakview Place Nursing Home, 2395 Ness Ave. Our family wishes to express our thanks to the staff at Oakview Place, especially 3 North for taking care of Henry over the years. In lieu of flowers, donations in Henry's memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 6 Donald St., Suite 200, Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6. ISABEL SOLIVEN

August 28, 2004

ISABEL SOLIVEN November 5, 1917 - August 25, 2004 Peacefully with her family by her side at the age of 86 years, our beloved Mother, Grandmother and sister, Isabel "Chabeng" Soliven, passed away at Seven Oaks Hospital. She is survived by one sister Oping; her son Wilfredo Jr. (Teresita); daughter-in-law Elaine; daughter Ellie (Perry); son Jose "Bon" (Marilyn); grandchildren, Higinio Jr., Anthony, Stephen, Jean Paul, Mark, Michael, Marlow, Debbie, Mary, Trisha and Andrea. Isabel was predeceased by her son Higinio Sr. and her loving husband and soulmate, Wilfredo Sr. "Mamang" was born on November 5, 1917 in the Philippines. She married her soulmate Wilfredo Sr. in August, 1940 and had four wonderful children. On May 30, 1974, she immigrated to Winnipeg. She worked at the Misericordia General Hospital as part of the support staff personnel. She lovingly helped patients and staff until 1989, when she retired. Isabel was an active member of the Filipino community, attending many social functions over the years with the seniors' group. She also enjoyed travelling, most recently to Hawaii, to visit her sister and family. In her leisure time, "Lola" enjoyed watching television and movies with her grandchildren. She never missed a basketball game or boxing match whenever there was one on. Her greatest love was her family. As a mother and grandmother, she loved each and every one of us unconditionally. She was proud of all her children and grandchildren and their accomplishments in each of their lives. The family would like to thank all of her friends and their families, and the staff of Seven Oaks Hospital, 4th Floor Unit 6, with special thanks to Shirley and Gina. Lamay will be held on Saturday, August 28 and Sunday, August 29 from 7:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. (south of the Royal Canadian Mint). Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 30 at St. Peter's Church, 748 Keewatin St. with Father Vincent De Paul Tchaoule officiating. Interment to take place in Glen Lawn Memorial Gardens. A gathering of family and friends will follow in the reception centre at Glen Lawn. IRIS SOMERVILLE

IRIS SOMERVILLE With sadness, the family announces that Iris Margarita Somerville passed away in Toronto at the Sunnybrook Hospital on August 26, 2004 at the age of 78. Iris was predeceased by her loving husband William Robert (Bert) in January, 2004. She is survived by two sons, Rick and wife Susan (Heap) of Winnipeg, Jeff and wife Angie (Chiasson) of Halifax; three grandchildren, Ainslie (Rick Lowes) of Toronto, Scott of Calgary and Erin of Halifax; one brother Jack of Kelowna. Iris was born in Toronto in 1925 to Stanley and Flora Nicholson and spent her childhood in rural Manitoba, Winnipeg and Thunder Bay where her father was a pharmacist. She completed her education in Thunder Bay at St. Joseph's Hospital where she graduated as a registered nurse. Iris practiced nursing at McKellar Hospital in Fort William until her marriage in 1947. Bert and Iris lived in Winnipeg (until 1969), Oakville, Vancouver and Toronto where Bert worked for Eaton's. Iris' enjoyments were her family, bridge, curling, golf, gardening and her many wonderful friends. Summer cottages at Gimli and West Hawk Lake in Manitoba, Chesterman Beach on Vancouver Island and Maple Leaf Acres, ON were a source of many fond memories. Iris always volunteered her time to worthy causes, the most notable being Meals on Wheels and the Red Cross from which she received a life time blood donation award. Iris is remembered for her exceptional devotion to her husband Bert, in particular as a care giver during the last few years. Iris' family deeply thanks the doctors, nurses and staff at Sunnybrook Hospital, in particular the 3rd Floor C Wing and Palliative Care Unit for their care. We are grateful for the support of Iris' many special friends. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Toronto General Hospital Transplant Unit. Family will receive friends at the Scott Funeral Home, 1273 Weston Rd., Toronto on August 31 from 11:00 a.m. until time of funeral service in the chapel at 1:00 p.m.

EVANGELINE SORENSEN Evangeline, beloved wife of William, passed away suddenly but peacefully on August 25, 2004 at the Health Sciences Centre. She leaves to mourn her passing and to cherish her memory, her loving husband William; her children, Bill (Debbie), David, Brenda (Craig) and Scott. She is also survived by her brother, Arnold (Terri); as well as numerous other relatives and dear friends. A private family service will take place at graveside. SIDNEY STERN

SIDNEY STERN February 28, 1920 - August 23, 2004 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Sidney is predeceased by his parents, Eichel and Rifka; by his brothers, Morris and Louis and by his sisters, Ann Schnoor, Sarah Satran and Besse Gilschag. Sidney is survived by his devoted wife Hilda of 62 years and by his children, Ricki Segal (Harold), Carole Gutkin (Terry) and Marvin Stern (Sherri); by his grandchildren, Marshall Lerner (fiancee Kathe), Brenlee Stafford (Rod), Michael Lerner (Amanda), Shaun Gutkin (fiancee Kathy), Meghan Gutkin, Micah and Max Stern and by his great-grandchildren, Syrai, Mahala, Maquire, Emily, Jacob and Angelica and by many close friends and family. Sid devoted his life to raising and supporting his family which was his first priority and who received his unconditional love. Before permanently entering the workforce he served his country during the Second World War in the Canadian Armed Services. When the war ended, he took up a career in the food industry which continued until his retirement. Sid's unique qualities as a caring and giving human being left his many customers counting him as a close friend. These qualities touched everyone who Sid came in contact with. A deeply religious man, he made the moral precepts of Judaism part of his everyday life. During his retirement years he especially enjoyed playing baseball, working out at the Rady Centre and spending time with his many friends and family. Sid's passing leaves a deep ache in the hearts of all who loved him. He will live forever in the memory of all who were fortunate to have known him. Funeral services were held at the Congregation Etz Chaim Synagogue on August 23 with interment at the Hebrew Sick Cemetery. Pallbearers were Marshall Lerner, Michael Lerner, Shaun Gutkin, Michael Lazar, Gary Lazar and Jeff Schnoor. Honorary pallbearers were Alan Selig, Eric Swirsky, Joe Mindell, Jack Gutkin and Toby Schnoor. As an expression of sympathy, donations may be made to The Hilda and Sid Stern Fund c/o The Jewish Foundation of Manitoba or to Na'amat.

KATHLEEN SUTTON

August 28, 2004

KATHLEEN MARY (KAY) SUTTON Kay passed away on Wednesday, August 18, 2004 at The Convalescent Home of Winnipeg. She was predeceased by her parents, Leonard J. Sutton and Dorothy M. Sutton and her sister-in-law Ann Sutton. She is survived by her brother Richard, her nephew Jim Sutton and his wife Lisa and daughter Claire as well as numerous cousins in England. Kay was born in St. Vital at the family home on Egerton Road, attended Glenwood School and Glenlawn Collegiate where she was a member of the first Grade 12 class at the Collegiate. She also attended Angus Business College. She worked for a number of years for the T. Eaton Company in the Mail Order Advertising Department and then for the Federal Civil Service in the Unemployment Insurance Department and Corporate and Consumer Affairs, retiring in 1984. After retirement she worked as a volunteer for the Manitoba Museum of Man and Nature cataloguing and writing descriptions of new artifacts as they were received by the museum. She was a longtime member of St. Mark's Anglican Church in St. Vital and a faithful member of the choir as well as a Sunday School teacher. She loved to travel, visiting England many times as well as Malaya and the southern United States. Her kindness and hospitality knew no bounds and she entertained relatives from overseas many times. She is particularly remembered by her nephew Jim for the generosity she showed to him. The family wish to thank the staff of The Convalescent home of Winnipeg for welcoming her into their family and providing such wonderful care for the last four years. Cremation has taken place and a committal service was held at St. Vital Cemetery at 4:00 p.m. Friday, August 27.
