All through Annie's battles with her illnesses, she never complained or questioned "why her." She always held fast to her faith that God would see her through. She was truly an inspiration to us all. MARY NIKODEM
August 14, 2004
MARY NIKODEM With all her family at her side, their beloved Mary passed peacefully into the arms of the angels and to her heavenly home on August 9, 2004, at 91 years of age. Mom will be deeply missed by her daughters, Ruby (Lawrence) Plischke and Audrey (Alfred) Plischke; loving grandchildren, Shannon Plischke, Daryl (Alan) Litke, Ian, Kyle and Audra Plischke (Jeff); and her "sweet, sweet" great-grandchildren, Quintin, Brooklynne and Keanna Litke, and Zackery and Rachael Plischke; sisters, Anne Przednowek and Elsie Fandych; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Mary was predeceased by her cherished husband of 63 years, Edward; her parents, Thomas and Alice Hutniak; infant daughter Violet and baby Edward; sister Nellie Mroz; twin brothers, John and Fred Hutniak; brothers-in-law, Paul, John, Bill, Edward and many of Ed's family. Mary was born in Brokenhead, MB on December 5, 1913. After moving to Allegra, Mary attended Bonar-Law School, and eventually met Edward, the love of her life. She was proud of the fact that she was baptized and married at Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church, which is now a part of a heritage museum in Beausejour, MB. Mary was a model for faith and resiliency, optimism, and above all, family. Working side-by-side with Dad, Mom's home was her castle, and she lovingly drew everyone into it. All special days were celebrated there, and with her boundless love for children - young and old, related and neighbouring - she truly showed us what "God's family" means. With a strong sense of faith, Mary became a founding member of the C.W.L. at St. Thomas RC Church in Allegra, and received her 25 year pin from St. Anthony of Padua Church in 2003. Mary loved to learn and was ever thankful to Uncle Mike for teaching her how to read and write Ukrainian, a skill she used to bond her family with those in the Ukraine. Her trips to Russia, the Ukraine, Hawaii, and the Caribbean created her love of culture, which was further extended through Folklorama and her caring Home Care ladies from Ethiopia, "The Islands", etc. Thanks Cindy, Elainie, Joan, Patricia, et al. Our family joins Mary's wishes in thanking Dr. Szajkowski for his long standing care of Mom; Fr. Terry, and Fr. Nestor and Stella for their visits, masses and blessings. We thank Eleanor, Eddie, Barbara and Alice for their frequent calls and chats; Fr. Nestor and Fr. Dado for the sacramental rites and prayers; and the wonderful staff of Seven Oaks Hospital, Third Floor, Unit 5 for their gentle compassionate care for Mom. Prayers will be held on Sunday, August 15, 7:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, August 16, 10:00 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua RC Church, 250 Burrin Ave., with Msgr. Chartrand officiating. Interment to follow at Holy Ghost Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Mom's "boys", Lawrence, Alfred, Ian and Kyle Plischke, Alan Litke, and Jimmy Kondratiuk. Mary loved and appreciated flowers. However, if friends prefer, contributions may be made to Epilepsy Manitoba, 825 Sherbrook St., Winnipeg, MB R3A 1M5; Manitoba Heart and Stroke Foundation, 300-6 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6; or Manitoba Lung Association, 629 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3A 0CA. DAVID BATE
May 27, 2004
DAVID BRADLEY BATE July 13, 1965 - May 23, 2004 We are deeply saddened to announce the tragic passing of David Bradley Bate on Sunday, May 23, 2004, at the age of 38 years. He will be missed by his wife Rhonda Bate (nee McFarlane) and cherished young sons Bradley and Carson; his mother Karen Debrecen and husband Jerry; his father David Bate and wife Doreen; his sister Sue Odaisky, husband Dave and their children Danika and Dylan; his sister Janet Debrecen; his grandmother Esther Bate; and numerous extended family and friends. Dave was born July 13, 1965 in Ajax, ON and spent most of his childhood in southern Ontario. He moved with his family to Winnipeg in 1977, where he attended Kildonan East Collegiate and the University of Manitoba. To remember Dave is to remember his vitality and enthusiasm for life. He was a natural athlete who excelled at every sport he played. As a little boy, Grandpa Andy bought him a pair of hockey skates, and Dave has been "on the go" ever since. Nature was Dave's playground. He was an avid outdoorsman, and lived for those endless days spent at the lake or in the woods, hunting, fishing, ATV riding and snowmobiling. When he wasn't roaming the bush, he loved puttering around the garage or the yard with his two favourite sidekicks, Bradley and Carson, never far behind. Rhonda and Dave met in 1987 under now legendary circumstances. (Those who have known Rhonda and David for some time will recall the story of Dave's endearing sign to Rhonda at her volleyball game in 1987.) Soon after, they became best friends. Thanks to Dave's persistence, it was not long before this incredible friendship blossomed into true love. Dave and Rhonda were married in 1991. Bradley was born in 1999 and Carson followed in 2001. They were an active family who enjoyed numerous adventures together. Dave poured his boundless energy into entertaining his two little buddies, Brad and Carson. Whether it was a scraped knee or a broken lawn mower, his boys revered their daddy as the man who could fix anything! Dave was charming and spirited, and his fondness for celebration ensured no one in the room experienced a sad mood or an empty wine glass for very long. He loved playing host to a full house of family and friends. The annual spring pig roast to celebrate his sons' birthdays and family ice fishing trips were always special occasions. These good times have provided his family and friends with some amazing memories. Dave shared a special relationship with his mother, Karen. It was clear to all who knew both that a special bond existed between them. Karen's success in running a business was a source of pride for David, and her abilities undeniably helped shape his view of the business world. After honing his skills for 14 years with Coca-Cola Ltd., Dave fulfilled his lifelong dream of owning his own company when he bought Miracle Sanitation two years ago. Dave was a dear husband, father, son, brother and friend. We are grateful for the short time we've shared with him and the extent to which he has blessed and enriched our lives. His family would like to thank everyone who has visited, telephoned, sent packages, or otherwise made their presence felt over the last few days. Your thoughts are truly appreciated and will never be forgotten. A celebration of Dave's life will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Friday, May 28 at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St., Winnipeg. Honorary pallbearers are Rick Los, Gary Boriskewich, Wes Sadkowski, David Clarke, Guy Burr, Grant Sokal, Dale Laurin and Darrell Yustak. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to: The Bate Family Trust Fund, in care of Oakbank Credit Union (Birds Hill Branch), 3187 Birds Hill Rd., East St. Paul, MB R2E 1G6.
