WOLDEMAR GOERZ On Monday, July 28, 2003, after a valiant five years and seven months struggle with cancer, Woldemar Goerz died at home, surrounded by his loved ones. He is survived by his beloved wife, Elfriede and three daughters, Linda and Brian Dyck, Sandra and Robert Dyck and Irene Goerz and Don Ledwos; grandchildren, Natalie and Trent Giesbrecht, Ashley and Ryan Wozniak, Ellie Dyck, David Dyck, Rachel Dyck, Jessica Pikel, Justin Pikel, Hope Goerz-Ledwos and Nicole Ledwos. He is also survived by his brother Peter and Susa Goerz; sister Irene and Jacob Gunther, numerous half brothers and sisters; aunts, Sara Driedger, Hella Peters and Lise Shamei; in-laws, Art and Irene Dyck, Harry and Mary Ann Loewen, Viktor and Betty Loewen, Korny and Irene Loewen and extended families. Woldemar was predeceased by his parents, Peter and Maria (nee Goossen) Goerz; by his father and mother-in-law, David and Maria Loewen; brother Walter Goerz; uncle Carl Driedger, and a half-brother in Russia. Woldemar was born on August 20, 1932 in Schoensee, Russia. Due to the ravages of war, his early years were extremely difficult, but when he immigrated to Canada from Russia through Germany in 1949 at the age of 17, his life totally changed. Arriving all alone in Canada, he was welcomed into his aunt and uncle's home, where he was encouraged to pursue the trade of welding that he would practice and love throughout his working career. This gave him an opportunity to travel throughout Canada, his adopted homeland. He eventually chose to stay with Manitoba Hydro where he worked and shared his knowledge for 33 years at the Selkirk Generating Station from where he retired in 1993. Woldemar was baptized in the Mennonite faith, and joined the North Kildonan Mennonite Church at the age of 20. He later met the love of his life, Elfriede Loewen, whom he married in 1957 and they shared 46 years and eight days of love and friendship. They had three daughters who brought them much happiness throughout the years and he was blessed with an opportunity to have a childhood alongside with his children. He was totally dedicated to his family, as a loving husband, father and grandfather. Woldemar and Elfriede travelled on numerous vacations, camping trips and weekend trips, all with family and friends. He enjoyed individual sports like swimming, cross-country skiing, cycling, but running marathons was his passion. He successfully completed a number of marathons held here in Winnipeg, but the highlight was the completion of the Boston Marathon. After suffering a serious industrial accident in 1985, and spending three months on the Burn Ward at Health Sciences Centre and one and one half years of physiotherapy, Woldemar still completed a full marathon in 1989, and a half marathon in 1990. His survival skills, endurance and perseverance were severely tested these last five years and seven months as he underwent aggressive treatments in his battle to survive cancer. His grace and dignity throughout his entire battle have been an inspiration to all who came in contact with him and cared for him as he fought to remain with his loved ones. The family extends heartfelt thanks to Dr. John Foerster, Tang and Carrie at the St. Boniface Oncology, family physician, Dr. Doermer, and numerous palliative care workers. MARTHA HEIMAN January 15, 1922 - July 25, 2003 The loving mother of seven children, Martha Heiman passed away Friday, July 25, 2003, at Birchwood Terrace Nursing Home in Kenora, ON, at 81. Martha immigrated to Canada from Poland in 1928. She spent most of her childhood and adult life in the Swan River Valley. She was the wife of Herbert Heiman. Always willing to help in her community, Martha often offered respite care for parents of handicapped children and visited elderly shut-ins. She was especially active in her church and was a longtime volunteer and supporter of Meals on Wheels and the Red Cross. Surviving Martha are her children, Garry Heiman (Alice) of Cajamarca, Peru, Trudie Heiman of Takamatsu, Japan, Millie Stovel (Richard) of Toronto, ON, Carolyn Heiman (Wayne Jensen) of Victoria, BC, Darlene Heiman of Winnipeg and Christine Hansen (Greg) of Kenora; and brothers and sisters, Evelyn (Art Dykau) of Kelowna, BC, Fred (Ruth Henkelman) of Kelowna, Alice (John Heyen) of Lethbridge, AB; six grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband in 1998; a brother Ervin; and her son David. ALBERT ERNEST JANKE 1921 - 2003 On Tuesday, July 29, 2003, at the age of 82 years, Albert Janke passed away. He is survived by his wife Eleanor, children, Donna (Rick Melia), Brenda (Clark Purves) and Ron (Chris); grandchildren, Caitlin, Alex, Laura, Sean, Sabrina, Adam, Kamryn and Eric, Erin, Abby; brothers, Lloyd (Louise) and Wilfred (Aileen); sisters, Thelma (Don Alexander), Ruth Murray and Lillian (Steve Trappitt); and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Fred and Susan Janke; two infant brothers; sister and brother-in-law Ethel and Gus Recksiedler; brother-in-law Jack Murray; and an infant son and daughter. Albert was born on his family's farm in Rosenfeld on July 21, 1921. He attended Rosenfeld school for two years before the family moved to a farm in the Morris area. He attended Youville School. He married Eleanor Kletke in 1949. They farmed in the Sperling area and later in the Morris area. They also sold and applied fertilizer for a few years. Albert also worked at the Manitoba Sugar Beet Company and was icemaker at the Morris Curling Rink. Farming remained his main interest. Albert was Past President of the Morris Lions Club, an Honorary Life Member of the Morris Curling Club and a member of the "Red Hat" Club of the Valley Agricultural Society. He enjoyed curling, playing cards, fishing, hunting, music, dancing, and spending time with family and friends. Albert and Eleanor spent many of their retirement years traveling to "PolkaFest" dances in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and the United States. Albert also had a strong faith and active church life. Family was very important to Albert and his grandchildren provided some of the greatest joys in his life. They will miss their "Papa". The family wishes to thank Dr. Fraser and nurses and staff at the Morris General Hospital for their wonderful care. ALEXANDER ROSS LITTLE Ross died peacefully at home on July 25, 2003. Born November 15, 1908 in Woodstock, ON, he was predeceased by his parents, Henry Alexander Little and Emily Christina (nee Ross); and his only brother Jim Little (Lillian) of London, ON. Ross is survived by his wife of 65 years, Helen, and their children: Christy; Peter (Noreen) of Owen Sound and their children Marion (Ted Hodson), Martha (Eric Tiisler), Alexander (Kim Stark), Heather and Christopher; Andrew of Calgary; and Ron (Cath) of Calgary and their children Jane and Jim; and by five great-grandchildren. Ross cherished memories of his childhood at Altadore, his family home in Woodstock and his many years at Lakefield Preparatory School. Education continued at Ridley College School, Trinity College (U of T), (Beta Theta Pi) Osgoode Hall and membership in the Law Society of Upper Canada. After starting work with the Canada Permanent Trust Company, Ross married Helen (Shuttleworth) on April 14, 1938 in London, ON. Ross was an R.C.A.F. Wing Commander during the Second World War, then rejoined the Permanent, moving to Winnipeg to become Branch Manager from 1945 until his retirement in 1972. Volunteer commitments were intensive and long term: The Canadian Disaster Relief Fund, Trustee of the Winnipeg School Board District No. 1, Save the Children Canada, figure skating judge, the Crescentwood Home Owners Association, the Men's Musical Club, Kiwanis and St. George's Anglican Church - Building Committee, Warden, Vestry and 50 year member of the choir. His favourite pastimes were playing and singing at the piano, painting with Helen and reading Canadian history principally through the Champlain Society and the Hudson's Bay Record Society. Travels with Helen and Christy were special times. Side roads had to be explored. His golf started with his dad in Woodstock, continued on his first day with Helen at Altadore, and on through the years at St. Charles Golf and Country Club. He and Helen shared decades of ice dancing at the Winnipeg Winter Club. His skates are still under his bed. Ross was an exemplary citizen, a wonderful father and a truly gentle man. He will be dearly missed. A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 2 at 11:00 a.m. at St. George's Anglican Crescentwood, 168 Wilton St., Winnipeg, MB R3M 3C3. SISTER JANE McDONALD Sister Jane Mary McDonald, aged 51 years, died peacefully at St. Boniface Hospital July 29, 2003 in the presence of her dear Aunt Mary Devine. Predeceased by her parents, Arthur and Christine, she is also survived by her siblings, John, William, Thomas and Cheryl; cousin Pat Nagara; her aunts, Eleanor Gilbert, Shirley Cates, and her uncle Charles Johnson, and all of their families in New Hampshire. Also other cousins in New Hampshire and Ireland. Sister Jane is also survived by her many dear friends in Winnipeg, especially at Our Place Chez Nous, where she will be sorely missed. Sister Jane became a Novitiate of Holy Cross almost 30 years ago. Since 1978 she served poor and homeless people in Winnipeg's inner city, initially through Baldwin House (The Salvation Army) Main Street Project, and in 1987 began a drop in centre, Our Place Chez Nous. On several occasions she was honoured for her commitment to poor people. Funeral service will be held at St. Ignatius, Corydon and Stafford on Friday, August 1 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be to Our Place Chez Nous or Winnipeg Harvest. ALICE M. MENARD (nee Morissette) Peacefully, with family by her side, at the St. Claude Pavilion on Monday July 28, 2003, Mrs. Alice Menard of Fannystelle, Manitoba passed away at the age of 87 years. She was predeceased by her parents, Amedee and Albertine; four brothers, Armand, Oscar, Henri and Benoit; two sisters, Ena and Cecile, her husband Louis in 1981; and by one daughter Diane in 1946. She leaves to mourn her passing four children, Irene Gendre (Leonard), Andre (Dianne), Rita Lavoie (Georges), Odette Chapellaz (Robert), and Louise Kelly; 18 grandchildren, Michel (Arlene), Colette (Paul), Paulette (Bruce), Lorraine, Anita (Kevin), Monique, Janine, Donald, Robert (Megan), Diane (Brad), Richard (Kathy), Martin (Barb), Claude (Sandy), Norman (Christine), Marc (Allison), Lynne (Craig), Angela, and Sean; and 24 great-grandchildren. She also leaves to mourn one sister Yvonne Senecal; and one brother Ubald Morissette. Mom loved knitting, sewing, gardening and she was well known for the love and skill she put into her baking and cooking. The kindness and generosity she showed everyday of her life will be remembered by all. Special thanks to the staff of the St. Claude Pavilion and the St. Claude Palliative Care for the kindness and support given to Mom and the family. Funeral Mass will be celebrated in the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Fannystelle, on Friday, August 1 at 10:30 a.m. preceded by Recitation of the Rosary at 10:00 a.m. with Father Armand LeGal officiating. Daniel is survived by three children, Danny Monis (Nelia), Rosa Monis (Lori) and Maria Timmerman (Jerome); grandchildren, Steven (Shelley), Kevin (Krystal), Ashley, Jordan, Kayla, Kylie, Krystin and Matthew; brothers-in-law, Joe Benevides (Fatima) and Manuel Benevides (Isabel); and numerous nieces, nephews and all his friends from Legion No. 1.
