PHILLIPS, Gordon Leonard - At Oak Bay, N.B., on Feb. 24, 2007, Gordon Leonard Phillips, husband of the late Rita (Dufour) Phillips, of Oak Bay, N.B., formerly of Valley Road, N.B.
Survived by three sons, one daughter, 13 grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by one son, Germain Phillips.
No visitation or funeral service will be held by request.
Interment at the Milltown Roman Catholic Cemetery.

Pinder, Phyllis Elizabeth
PINDER, Phyllis Elizabeth - Phyllis Elizabeth Pinder, born April 6, 1915, in Perth, N.B., died March 12, 2007 at Passamaquoddy Lodge, St. Andrews, N.B. Phyllis was the only daughter of Hayden H. Inman and Elizabeth Chapman Inman.
Phyllis moved to Moncton early in her married life, and, together with her husband, Les, enjoyed curling, golf and bridge with lifelong friends. Curling was her specialty, and she skipped the NB Provincial Team twice at the national competitions and won the Moncton City Women’s trophy several times (MCA). At the age of 80, she gave up golfing at the Moncton Golf and Country Club, where she had been a member for more than 50 years.
Phyllis also enjoyed music, playing the piano and often accompanying Les on the saxophone. She continued to play the piano well into her later years.
She was predeceased by her husband, Leslie A. Pinder; and three brothers, Wilmot, Ellsworth (Peter) and Bertram.
Phyllis is survived by her daughter, Dr. Lesley Pinder, and several nieces and nephews.
Special thank you to nephew, Peter (Helen) Inman, whose help enabled her to remain in her home longer than otherwise, and nieces, Judy (Ron) Jodrie and Cathy (Dennis) Mires, for visits and caring.
Mention needs to be made of the “West End Sewing Club, ” which started in the 1950s, met weekly in their homes, supported members through 50 years of family life, and formed friendships that lasted a lifetime.
I would like to thank my many friends and colleagues whose company Phyllis so enjoyed at innumerable gatherings, and also the staff at Passamaquoddy Lodge who gave such excellent care to Phyllis during her years there.
A memorial service will be held in Moncton at a later date.

Survived by one son, Stanley Lounder, of West Hartford, Ct.; two daughters, Sandra Kinney, of Naples, Me., and Sheila Wright, of St. Stephen, N.B.; 10 grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Griffin, Rupert Gale
GRIFFIN, Rupert Gale – Rupert Gale Griffin, born June 9, 1922, son of the late Arnold and Faye Griffin (Urquhart) passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on Grand Manan Island, March 19, 2007.
Rupert was a true gentleman to all he came in contact with and a very well respected captain of the herring carrier Andrew & Deane, that he owned and operated for many years, until his retirement in 1990. He was a member of the North Head United Baptist Church, decorated World War II veteran, Life Member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 44 and several times Past Master of the F & AM Masonic Mananook Lodge No. 38.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Doris (Stott); daughters, Gwendolyn Griffin, Saint John, N.B., Nancy Griffin and Gail Miller (Wayne), of Grand Manan, N.B.; grandchildren, Jeremy W. Miller, of Castalia, Grand Manan, N.B., and Patrick Miller, of Hobart, Tasmania, Australia, Jessamyn and Bailey Griffin, P.E.I.; and great-grandson, Brady Russell, Grand Manan, N.B.; two brothers, Merrill Griffin (Beulah) and Gerald Griffin (Albertine), both of Grand Manan, N.B.
He was predeceased by his beloved son, Master Mariner Capt. Andrew Griffin (2000).
Last respects were made on Tuesday, March 20, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., with a Masonic service at 6:30 p.m.
All were welcomed at the funeral service, which was held from the United Baptist Church, North Head, N.B., on Wednesday, March 21, 2007 at 1 p.m., with Rev. Ron Ford officiating.
Interment followed in the North Head Cemetery.
"Bon voyage, Dad, we’ll see you on the other side."

Aker, Douglas Bernard
AKER, Douglas Bernard - Douglas Bernard Aker, 67, of St. Stephen, N.B., passed away unexpectedly at Saint John Regional Hospital, Saint John, N.B., on Friday, Feb. 23, 2007. Born in Windsor, N.S., he was the son of the late Robert and Violet (Matheson) Aker.
He is survived by his loving wife, Darlene (Gillis); two wonderful sons, Gordie Aker, of St. Stephen, N.B., and Tony Aker of Fredericton, N.B.; two brothers, Robert Aker, of Newport Station, N.S., and Walter (Mutt) Aker, of New Ross Road, Hants County, N.S.; three sisters, Ruby Barker, of Pembroke, Ont., Minnie (Calvin) Riley, of Three Mile Plains, N.S., and Juanita (Toot) Davidson, of Port Williams, N.S. He is also survived by his much-loved mother and father-in-law, Doris and Mike Gillis, of St. Stephen, N.B., many nieces, nephews and friends.
Doug was predeceased by his parents; four sisters, Doris, Pauline (Mrs. Cecil Briggs), Goldie (Mrs. Malcolm Redmond), and Mary (Mrs. Veron Redden); five brothers, Gordon, George, Lawrence, Ralph and Edgar.
Doug was a member of the Canadian Armed Forces for 26 years, then worked as a rural route mailman and with the Corps of Commissionaires.
There was no visitation by request.
Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at the St. Stephen's Roman Catholic Church, Milltown Blvd., St. Stephen, N.B., on Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2007 at 10:30 a.m.
Interment at Milltown Roman Catholic Cemetery.

MacDougall, Flora Wilelma
MacDougall, Flora Wilelma – Flora Wilelma (Cameron) MacDougall passed away peacefully on Grand Manan Island, N.B., on Friday, March 23, 2007 at the age of 92. Born Oct. 17, 1914 in Churchville, Pictou County, Nova Scotia, she was the daughter of the late Howard and Jeanette Cameron.
After spending the earlier years of her life in Cuba, where her father was employed with the United Fruit Company of America, she returned to Halifax at the age of 16 and graduated from the Halifax Academy and Maritime Business College. She made her home in Halifax for most of her life, retiring at age 68 from her position as accountant with the Nova Scotia Teachers’ Union.
In 1991 she moved to Grand Manan, N.B., where she was welcomed into the community and made many new and dear friends.
Mrs. MacDougall is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Hugh Campbell, of Grand Manan Island, N.B., and three nieces, Janet (Richard) Holmes, Bartonsville, Penn., Linda (Stanley) VanDyle, East Petpeswick, N.S., and Heather (Alan) Simpson, of Dartmouth, N.S. She was the last remaining member of her immediate family.
She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas L. MacDougall; one sister, Elsie Cameron; and brothers, Clarence and John Cameron.
A memorial service was held at the Grand Manan Nursing Home on Monday, March 26, 2007 at 2 p.m., with Rev. Ron Ford officiating.
Burial will be held at a later date in the Fairview Cemetery, Halifax, N.S.
The family has requested that donations may be made to the Grand Manan Nursing Home and flowers are from the family members only.

Hawkins, Floyd Franklin
HAWKINS, Floyd Franklin - Unexpectedly, at the Saint John Regional Hospital, Saint John, N.B., on Feb. 19, 2007, Floyd Franklin Hawkins, husband of Kathleen (Flagg) Hawkins of Beaver Harbour, N.B. Born in Beaver Harbour on Sept. 3, 1921, he was a son of the late Arthur and Lena (Dickson) Hawkins.
A loving husband, father, grandfather and brother, he is survived by his loving wife, Kay; three sons, Colin, of Ottawa, Ont., D. Kevin (Kerrie), of Blacks Harbour, N.B., and Daniel, of Grand Manan, N.B.; three daughters, Ruby (Bill) Scott, of Halifax, N.S., Corlea (George) Losier, of Saint John, N.B., and Sally (Tony) Nabuurs, of Beaver Harbour, N.B.; one daughter-in-law, Darlene Hawkins, of Pennfield, N.B.; 11 grandchildren, Neil (Mary) Hawkins, Sean Hawkins, Katie (Dave) Valiquette, Suzanne Hawkins, Robert Scott, Andrea (Wayne) Thompson, Sarah English, Zachary and Stephanie Nabuurs, and Lindsay and Sarah Hawkins; eight great-grandchildren, Tyler and Jonathan Hawkins, Spencer, D. Tyler and Lacey Hawkins, Kathleen and Joshua Thompson, and Maria Valiquette; two sisters, Gladys Stewart and Lila Wright, both of Sudbury, Ont.; one brother, James (Florence) Hawkins, of Beaver Harbour, N.B.; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by two sons, Rodney and Derwyn; and by one brother, Malcolm.
Floyd was born a man of the sea and a sea captain for many years. Remembered fondly as skipper of the W.A. Moore. In his early years, he worked in the fishery until he enlisted with the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War. The first ship he was assigned to was the HMCS Achates, which was sunk only 10 days after he began his service, off the coast of England. He then was assigned to the HMCS Haida full time, until the end of the war.
After returning home to Beaver Harbour, he again made his living on the Bay of Fundy, fishing lobster and groundfish. He was also a dedicated weir fisherman. Floyd was well known and well respected and an advocate for the Maritime fisheries.
The family received friends at the St. George Funeral Home, 26 Portage Street, St. George, N.B., on Wednesday evening from 6-9 p.m.
The service was held at Christ Church (Anglican), Pennfield, N.B., on Thursday, Feb. 22, 2007 at 2 p.m., followed by interment in the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations would be greatly appreciated to the Fundy Nursing Home in memory of Floyd.
