Brown, Edward Raye
BROWN, Edward Raye – Peacefully, at his residence at Pennfield, N.B., on Nov. 17, 2007, Mr. Edward Raye Brown, husband of the late Mrs. Olive (English) Brown. Born at Wilsons Beach, Campobello, N.B., on Dec. 6, 1915, Raye was a son of the late Willie and Gertrude (Ludlow) Brown.
A loving father, grandfather and uncle he is survived by two daughters, Rebecca (Bert) Anthony, of Pennfield, N.B., and Natalie (Morris) Harris, of Blacks Harbour, N.B.; four grandchildren, Andrew (Tammy) Anthony, of Pennfield, N.B., LeighAnn (Kenneth) Richardson, of Leonardville, N.B., Laura Harris (Jeff Tucker), of Musquash, N.B., and Brent Harris, of Sackville, N.B.; three great-grandchildren, Rachel Richardson, and Emily and Oliva Tucker; one sister- in-law, Louise Calder; two nephews, Edmond (Doreen) Calder, of Jemseg, N.B., and David (Heather) English, of Fredericton, N.B.
Raye was a veteran of World War II, serving with the Marine Squadron of the R.A.F. stationed at Point Doichin, Que., Halifax, N.S., and Shediac, N.B. He was a past president and life member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 39 and past District Commander of St. Croix District. Raye was an avid sportsman and outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing, as well as skeet shooting and curling. He was a past president of the St. George and Brunswick curling clubs. Raye was also an active member of the Liberal Party.
Prior to his retirement, Raye spent most of his working life around the water as a lighthouse keeper, working at Pea Point Light for a number of years, before going to work as wharf agent for Coastal Transport in Blacks Harbour, N.B.
Rested at the St. George Funeral Home & Crematorium, 26 Portage Street, St. George, N.B., from where the service was held from The Gary E. Waycott Memorial Chapel on Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2007 at 2 p.m., with Rev. Keith Osborne officiating.
Interment followed at the Pennfield Rural Cemetery.
Visiting took place at the funeral home on Monday evening. A Royal Canadian Legion Tribute Service was held at the funeral home on Monday at 6:30 p.m.
In Raye’s memory, donations to the NB Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
Tapley, James Gordon
At the Charlotte County Hospital, St. Stephen, N.B., on Nov. 19, 2007, James “Bud” Gordon Tapley of St. Stephen, N.B.; son of the late Harry and Frances (Tucker) Tapley.
Survived by two daughters, Vickie Tapley and Terry Tapley, both of Toronto, Ont., one brother, Had (Irma), St. Stephen, N.B.; several nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by his wife, Serena E. (Trafton) Tapley.
Resting at The S.O. Mehan & Son Funeral Home Ltd., 23 Main Street, St. Stephen, N.B., from where funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2007 at 2 p.m.
Interment at St. Stephen Rural Cemetery.
Visiting hours will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances to the Charlotte County Cancer Society or charity of one’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
Hooper, Blake Reta
Blake Reta Hooper, 94, of North Head, Grand Manan Island, N.B., passed away at the Grand Manan Nursing Home on Friday, Nov. 16, 2007. She was the daughter of the late Oswald and Flora (Stanley) Parker.
Blake will be remembered for her hard work and dedication at the Marathon Hotel with her sister, Jessie, at her side as they cooked, cleaned, and pampered the many guests that passed through the hotel over the years. She was also a faithful servant to the Lord, as she was a member of the North Head Wesleyan Church.
Survived by one granddaughter, Lavonne MacKenzie, of Quispamsis, N.B.; one grandson, Delma Doucette, Fredericton, N.B.; her great-grandchildren Jeremy and Barbie Doucette, Callie and Data Brainanta, and Colleen MacKenzie; also one great-great-grandson, Che Brainanta, the love of her life; two sisters, Stella Avery and Ella Gaskill, both of North Head, N.B.; many nieces and nephews; and will be missed by her friends and the staff at the Grand Manan Nursing Home.
She was predeceased by her husband, Frank; daughter, Margaret Doucette; sisters, Della Taylor, Nettie Taylor, Fern Small, Edith Searle and Jessie Hatt, and three brothers, Garfield, Harvey, and Cleveland Parker.
Visiting took place from Ells Funeral Home on Sunday.
The funeral service was held on Monday, Nov. 19, 2007 at 1:30 p.m., from the North Head Wesleyan Church with Rev. Charles Bain officiating.
Interment followed at the North Head Community Cemetery.

Babcock, Marguerite Harriet (Linda)
At the Charlotte County Hospital, St. Stephen, N.B., on Nov. 16, 2007, Marguerite Harriet (Linda) Babcock, widow of the late Norman E. Babcock of St. Stephen-Milltown, N.B. Daughter of the late John J. and Mary M. (McDonald) Clair.
Linda was a loving mother to son, Hal and his wife, Barbara, of Fredericton, N.B., loving grandmother of Aaron (Stephanie) Babcock, of Dartmouth, N.S., Jeremy (Lindsay) and Andrew Babcock, of Fredericton, N.B., great-grandmother to Emily, Jacob, Noah and Avelyn Babcock; loving sister to Eileen McCann (Alan), Summerside, P.E.I., and Frederick Clair (Connie) Charlottetown, P.E.I.; a special niece, Joanne MacCready (John) of St. Stephen, N.B.; and several nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by four brothers, Thomas, Malcolm, Earl and Bruce Clair; infant brother, Grant; two sisters, Anna McKeeman and Helen Doherty.
Linda was the first female town Councillor for St. Stephen, N.B., and the former Milltown, N.B.
She was active in the Catholic Women’s League and St. Stephen Housing Co-op, from its inception. Also active in the Charlotte County Liberal Party.
Funeral Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated from St. Stephens’ Roman Catholic Church, Milltown Blvd., St. Stephen, N.B. on Monday, Nov. 19, 2007 at 10 a.m., with Rev. Bill Weiss officiating.
Visiting was held at The S.O. Mehan and Son Funeral Home Ltd., 23 Main Street, St. Stephen, N.B., on Sunday, Nov. 18, 2007.
Interment at the Milltown Roman Catholic Cemetery, St. Stephen, N.B.

Daggett, William Dwight
William (Bill) Dwight Daggett - (Dec. 13, 1944 – Nov. 15, 2007) passed through the valley of the shadow of death into the light and peace of His Lord, whom he loved, on Nov. 15, 2007 with his family by his side. He was the fourth son of William Earle Daggett (predeceased on June 2, 1970) and Della (nee Huntley) Daggett Keating.
He is survived by his loving wife, Linda (nee Taylor), and daughter, Anzonette (Blaine) Brown, and grandsons, Mitchell and Jaden. He will be sorely missed by his mother and older brothers, Russell (Ida), Claude (Helen), Layne (Helena); and younger sister, Bonnie (Allen) Benson; his brother-in-law, Dwight Taylor (Charmaine); and all his nieces and nephews.
Bill and Linda were married in Grand Harbour Baptist Church on Aug. 21, 1965 and have been devoted to their daughter and proud of their grandsons.
Bill was a lifetime resident of Grand Manan, N.B., where he was well liked, admired and respected. His good humour, quick wit and gifted storytelling left warm and indelible impressions. Finally, in 2004 and 2007, Bill’s unwavering devotion to the Red Sox reaped overdue results!
He graduated from GMHS in 1962. He graduated as elected valedictorian from the Maritime Forest Ranger School at Fredericton in 1972. He worked in his younger years in the fishing industry and became captain of the Michael and Eileen with his Dad as mate. He managed the Anchorage Provincial Park, which was the original birth site of his paternal great-grandfather, from 1972 to 2001.
Bill was politically attuned and astute and he served with distinction his beloved island community for almost 12 years serving as councillor, deputy mayor and as mayor.
Over the course of many years, he worked hard at improving ferry service for the island residents. He expanded and supervised the rockweed industry for Acadia Seaplants Ltd., which provided employment for island residents and Newfoundland workers whom he loved and appreciated. He also represented the Island at the Business Development Cooperation for over a decade.
Upon his profession of faith, Bill was baptized in the Seal Cove Baptist Church, and subsequently became an active member in the Grand Harbour Baptist Church. His faith in his loving Lord sustained him in his hours of need and he carefully and prayerfully reached out to his many friends even during his illness. His spiritual life was enriched by his many Christian friends and pastors and comforted by the television programs featuring The Gaithers, Souls’ Harbor, and Dr. Jeremiah.
Because of the kind supportive attention they received and on behalf of Bill, his family wish to express their sincere appreciation to the staff of Grand Manan and Saint John Regional hospitals, the air and land ambulance services, doctors Burnell, Dapena and Loree Boyle, and the crew of the Grand Manan ferries.
Visiting hours were held at Ells Funeral Home on Saturday, Nov. 17.
The funeral service was held on Sunday, Nov. 18, 2007 at 1:30 p.m., from the Grand Harbour Baptist Church, with Rev. Gordon Walker officiating, assisted by Rev. Ron Ford, and Rev. Layne Daggett.
Interment followed at the Hillside Cemetery in Seal Cove.
Bill’s family has requested memorials be made to the Grand Harbour Baptist Church, The Gideons, The Cancer Society, Vancouver Airport Chaplaincy or a charity of your choice.
