Irving, Lloyd David
A Community Loses A Friend – The family of Lloyd David Irving are saddened to announce that "Pinky" has passed away after a lengthy battle with cancer at the age of 76. He died peacefully at his home looking out at the ocean on the Glebe Road in Chamcook, N.B., surrounded by his family, on Thursday evening, Dec. 13, 2007.
Lloyd is survived by his best friend and wife of 58 years, Jeanette Alice Murphy Irving; one daughter, Sandra Joy Sullivan; son-in-law Paul; granddaughters, Melissa, Savannah, Hannah, Zoe and Naomi; one son, Ralph Jeffrey Irving; daughter-in-law Elizabeth; granddaughters Isabelle and Charlee; and one brother, Earle Irving, of St. Stephen, N.B., and spouse, Josephine Smith.
Lloyd was predeceased by his sister, Edith O'Donnell, and his parents, Raymond and Hazel Irving, of Tower Hill, N.B.
Lloyd lived in and around the St. Andrews area for the last 45 years and was well known to everyone in the community for his friendly warm manner.
Whether it was a brief encounter with a short conversation or simply a wave from across the street, you were always greeted with a friendly smile and kindness in his eyes. Once you were a friend of Lloyd's, you were a friend for life.
After leaving the Royal Canadian Air Force and moving to St. Andrews in the early ’60's, he delivered oil for Esso, worked at the bowling alley at the Sir James Dunn Arena, sold insurance, went to the Lady Dunn Trade School and earned his carpenters license and eventually joined the Passamaquoddy Lodge Maintenance Department, from which he retired in the mid ’90's. He was fondly remembered by co-workers for his non-stop antics and great sense of humour. He was a hardworking, never miss a day type, and firmly believed that if "you didn't do it well, there was not point in doing it at all."
The last ten years or so of his everyday life were spent at his home in Chamcook with "Jenny", where, between gardening, lawns and "house projects", there was never a dull moment and he often stated, "I don't know how I had time to work." They managed a few trips south in the winter to avoid some snow shovelling, but genuinely loved their home and surroundings. When asked if he wanted to go somewhere for a "last trip", he simply smiled his usual grin and said, "Why? I love it right here."
He will be sadly missed as he has touched the lives of everyone that has had the pleasure of meeting him. He has requested not to have a service or memorial, that was his humble way. In conversation with a longtime family friend who had inquired, he was actually relieved. "You know, I can't imagine Lloyd without a smile on his face so I'll stick to the memory that I have of our last visit."
That's what Dad would have wanted... remember the good times.
The family will have a private gathering after Christmas for family and close friends.
For anyone wishing to make donations, he has requested they be made to the Passamaquoddy Childrens Centre, St. Andrews.
