Many of these paintings will live on in the hearts, minds and homes of those who knew and loved her. Grammy, as she was known by her seven grandchildren, and GG by her two great-grandchildren, was sure never to forget a birthday, Christmas, Valentine’s, Easter or Hanukkah, when little gifts and cards meant so much.

Singleton, Courtney Leigh Estes
SINGLETON, Courtney Leigh Estes – Courtney Leigh Estes Singleton passed away on Sunday, Jan. 20, 2008, in Fresno, Calif., with her husband and mother by her side, after a courageous year-long battle with brain cancer. Courtney was born in Torrance, Calif., and grew up in southern California, until moving to St. Andrews in the mid-1980s. She attended school in St. Andrews and briefly went to RCS Netherwood in Rothesay, N.B., Courtney started travelling at a very young age, flying between New Brunswick and California or Florida in her teens. She then lived in Florida and Texas for a few years, always returning to St. Andrews to re-group and recharge herself. She attended NBCC St. Andrews, taking the Hospitality Course, which seemed a natural fit for her vibrant personality. Her love of travel and new places took her from Florida to Columbia, Aruba, Mexico and Italy, in addition to many of the states.
She recently returned to California with her dog, Bella, by her side, to be close to her ailing grandmother; married the love of her life, Duane; and was so proud of her success in pursuing a continuing career of management of an upscale restaurant.
Courtney’s mantra during the last year of her short life was “Live, Laugh, and Love” and she did all of these to the fullest. Her last trips home to St. Andrews and Dallas were filled with laughter and love, joyous reunions with family and close friends, and she treasured every hug and embrace. All of the good days were filled with confidence and plans for the future, thus inspiring her friends to be closer to their loved ones and to appreciate life more. Courtney has left a large hole in our lives.
A memorial service will be held at the St. Andrews Anglican Church, St. Andrews, N.B., on Feb. 23, 2008 at 2 p.m., with a reception to follow in the church hall.

Starkey, Anne Catherine North
Anne Catherine North (Mrs. Gilbert) Starkey, passed away March 3, 2008 at Federal Way, Washington, U.S.A., age 97. Anne was born at the family home at 80 Welshpool Back Road, Welshpool, Campobello, N.B., on April 20, 1911, the fifth child of Edward Owen and Laila Mae (Greenlaw) North.
Anne attended the Welshpool village school, where she was a student of her Aunt Polly (Miss Mary Margaret Mitchell). When the family removed to Gardner, Mass., in 1923, she attended Gardner schools, where she was captain of the girls’ basketball team.
In 1939, she married Gilbert Gordon Starkey, of Baldwinville, Mass.
A homemaker through most of her life, she had an early interest in collecting antique furniture, which she refinished and re-upholstered. An avid and enthusiastic knitter and seamstress, she was never seen without her knitting needles and produced dozens of sweaters for family members.
The favourite story of their boyhood, sons Gil and Don often recalled how she once pinned a dress, fabric and pattern, on a bed and proceeded to cut up the bedspread!
In retirement, Anne and her husband, Gilbert, purchased and renovated the Isabel Vennel estate in Welshpool. After her husband’s death, Anne built a smaller home on an adjacent property.
She is survived by her son, Gilbert Gordon Starkey, Jr.; grandsons, Perry, Brian, Eric and Jonathan; and nine great-grandchildren. An interment ceremony is planned for this summer, to which all are invited to attend. At that time, Mr. G.G. Starkey will be returning with his mother’s ashes, so that she may be buried next to his father at the Anglican cemetery in Welshpool.
Cards or letters of condolence may be sent to: Gilbert Gordon Starkey, Jr., 2606 SW 323 Street, Federal Way, WA 98023.
The family requests that donations in memory of Anne Catherine be made to St. Anne’s Anglican Church in Welshpool, in support of the maintenance of the cemetery.
Remember the words of the 23rd Psalm:
"Yae, though I walk through the Valley of the Shadow of Death, I shall fear no evil, for Thou art with me."
Burgess, Marjorie Annie
With great sadness we announce that our mother, Marjorie Annie (Clingo) Burgess, of 500-110 Venus Court, Fredericton, N.B., passed away at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital on Friday, March 7, 2008.
Marjorie was predeceased in 1991 by Charles, her husband of over 50 years. She was also predeceased by her parents, John and Maude Clingo; her brother, Derek Clingo; and two sisters, Eileen Ebbett and Kathleen Gaunce.
She is survived by three sons and their families: John (Janet) and Paul (Marlene), of Fredericton, N.B., and Keith (Sheree), of Smithfield, N.B. She will be sadly missed by her grandchildren: Nancy, Brian, Carl, Kirsten, Karen, and Whitney; by her great-grandchildren: Avery, Alicia, Brandon, Christopher, and Phillip; and by many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by one sister, Joan Moore, of Fredericton, N.B., and one brother, Keith Clingo, of Quispamsis, N.B.
Born in England in 1913, Marjorie immigrated to Canada with her family in 1921, and lived in Upper Hampstead, near Gagetown.
She was a registered nurse by profession, having studied in Saint John, and graduated from the nursing program at the former Chipman Memorial Hospital in St. Stephen, N.B., in 1937. Marjorie and Charles resided in Milltown, N.B., with their three sons until they moved to Fredericton (Silverwood) in 1958.
Following Charles' death, Marjorie moved to her Venus Court condominium, where she enjoyed the friendship of many wonderful close neighbours.
Marjorie was a member of the Christ Church Parish Church.
For many years as a nurse, she cared for others, first in St. Stephen and then in Fredericton. After retiring from nursing, her caring for others took many forms, including visiting and helping those in need, providing knitting for the church and the Salvation Army, and sharing her celebrated rolls and pies with many who enjoyed them. Barkley especially enjoyed her affectionate greetings and the special doggie treats which she always had for him.
Her sons feel truly blessed to have had her as a vital part of their lives for so many great years. We treasure the knowledge that her family meant so very much to her.
It was Mom's wish to have no visitation, and she requested only a simple service. She wanted us to remember her in our hearts.
Memorial donations may be made to the Chalmers Hospital Foundation, or a charity of the donor's choice.
Arrangements are being provided by Bishop's Funeral Home, 540 Woodstock Road, Fredericton.
A funeral service will be scheduled at a later date, and her ashes will be interred beside her late husband, Charles, in the St. John's Anglican Church Cemetery in Gagetown, N.B.
