Johnson, Myrle
Myrle was born in Rollingdam, N.B., on April 5, 1915, the son of Harold and Adelaid Johnson. He was the oldest of seven children. His father, Harold, was a section foreman for the railway and travelled all around with his family to numerous locations.
Myrle worked in the woods in his early years. In 1940, he married Esther Young, with whom he just celebrated his 68th wedding anniversary this past May 15. They had two sons, Royden and Gene, and have eight grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
Myrle joined the Royal Regiment of Canada No. G2472 and for three years he fought all over Europe, where he was wounded on the front lines in battle. When he returned home, he was employed at the Cotton Mill in Milltown. When the mill closed down, Esther and Myrle acquired visas and moved to Boston, Mass.
On retirement, Myrle and Esther returned to St. Stephen, where they purchased a home in Milltown. Due to the expansion of the Flakeboard Company, Myrle and Esther sold their home and moved to Heathland, with their son, Gene. Myrle was an active member of the Gateway Cathedral for many years.
On July 6, 2008, Myrle was called home to be with his Saviour. His wife, Esther, and two sons, Royden and Gene, were at his side at the time of his passing.
If we cannot do him honour while he’s here to hear the praise,
Then at least let’s give him homage, at the ending of his days,
Perhaps a simple headline in a paper that would say,
Our country is in mourning, for a soldier died today!
