Armstrong, Bruce W.

Bruce W. Armstrong, born in Blacks Harbour, N.B., April 8, 1955, passed away after a lengthy illness, at the Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Orillia, Ont., on Jan. 13, 2009; son of Phyllis Murphy (Armstrong), Lake Utopia, N.B., and the late William Armstrong, Fredericton, N.B.
He is survived by his son, Clifford Armstrong, Orillia, Ont., and daughter, Lisa Armstrong, Orillia, Ont.; sister, Nancy Armstrong, St. Andrews, N.B.; brothers, Dennis Armstrong, Lake Utopia, N.B., and Mark Armstrong (Jamie), Fredericton, N.B.; and special friend, Kim Robinson.

Clark, Elwood James

At the Charlotte County Hospital, St. Stephen, N.B., on Jan. 13, 2009, Elwood James Clark, husband of Barbara C. (Robar) Clark, of Upper Mills, N.B.; son of the late James and Cora Mae (Dodds) Clark.
Survived by his wife, Barbara; two sons: Steven (Donna) Clark, Ottawa, Ont., and Andrew (Diane) Clark, Colorado Springs, Colo.; daughter, Karen Rogers, Toronto, Ont.; grandchildren: Kelly, Kip and Kora Keith, Abbey Clark, and Ashley and Hunter Clark; one sister, Darlene Jacobs, Saskatchewan; several nieces and nephews.
Rested at The S.O. Mehan & Son Funeral Home Ltd., 23 Main Street, St. Stephen, N.B., from where funeral service was held on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2009 at 11 a.m.
Interment at Nashwaak Bridge Cemetery.
Visiting hours were held at the funeral home on Friday evening.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances to the Poppy Fund or charity of one’s choice would be appreciated by the family.

Cooke, Bernice M.

Mrs. Bernice M. Cooke, 89, passed away Sunday, Jan. 18, 2009, at Passamaquoddy Lodge, St. Andrews, N.B. Born in Deep Cove, Grand Manan Island, N.B., she was the daughter of the late Mabury and Celia Russell.
Bernice worked alongside her husband looking after lighthouse stations and providing love and care for her family. She was very involved with the Seal Cove Wesleyan Church throughout the years with Sunday School, prayer meetings, and most of all, loving and worshiping the Lord.
She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Patricia (Rev. Wayne) Briggs, of Brown’s Flat, N.B.; one sister, Nellie Hooper, of St. Stephen, N.B.; one brother, Burton (Bessie) Russell, of Angus, Ont.; also her grandchildren: Harvie W. Briggs, of Kemptville, Ont., Deborah (Chuck) Rowlett, of Raleigh, N.C.; her great-grandchildren: Mark, Eric, Kaitlin and Jasmine Briggs.
She was predeceased by her husband, Harvie, in 1999.
Visiting will be held from the Seal Cove Wesleyan Church on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
The funeral service will be held from the church on Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2009 at 1 p.m., with Rev. Wayne Briggs officiating and Rev. Ward McComiskey and Rev. Charles Bain assisting.
Bernice’s family has requested donations may be made to the Water Waste Project at Beulah Camp, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
Funeral arrangements are in the care of Ells Funeral Home, 1199 Route 776, Grand Manan, NB E5G 1G2.

Dunfield, James C., Col. MD (Ret’d.)

At Lincourt Manor, St. Stephen, N.B., on Saturday, Jan., 17, 2009, Dr. James Clifford Dunfield, husband of Beatrice Thora (Andrews) Dunfield, of St. Stephen, N.B. Born in Winnipeg, Man., he is the son of the late Clifford and Ariel Ella (Corrigill) Dunfield.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, Bea, are his children: Dr. James I. Dunfield (Heather), of Terrace, B.C., and Andrea Myers (Peter), of Waterloo, Ont.; seven grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins.
By Jim’s request, there will be no visitation at the funeral home or service.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the care and direction of Humphreys’ Funeral Home, 20 Marks Street, St. Stephen, N.B.

Scovil, Kathryn Ethel

Unexpectedly at her residence, McAdam, N.B., on March 1, 2009, Kathryn Ethel (O’Brien) Scoville, widow of Robert R. Scoville; daughter of the late Eugene and Leona (Amero) O’Brien.
Survived by her two daughters: Diane Blair, of McAdam, N.B., and Joyce Scott (David), of Vanceboro, Me.; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Jackie Scott, of St. Stephen, N.B.; one brother, Lewis O’Brien, of Alaska; several nieces and nephews.
Resting at St. Paul’s United Church, McAdam, N.B., from where funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 5, 2009 at 11 a.m.
Committal service to follow in the spring.
Visitation will be held at St. Paul’s United Church on Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. only.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances to St. Paul’s United Church, St. Clement’s Catholic Church or charity of one’s choice would be appreciated by the family.

Hughes, David John

At Charlotte County Hospital, St. Stephen, N.B., on Jan. 19, 2009, David John Hughes, husband of Faye W. (Nason) Hughes, of Heathland, N.B.
Survived by his wife, Faye; daughter, Darlene (Rick) Arsenault, St. Stephen, N.B.; son, Carl Omar (Coleen), St. Stephen, N.B.; daughter, Lisa (Colin) Scott, St. Stephen, N.B., four granddaughters: Carly, Kaitlyn, Monica and Shaina; four grandsons, Keith, Cody, Kyle and Kirk; three sisters, Marilyn (Willard) Lawrence, Saint John, N.B., Janet Kerr, St. Stephen, N.B., and Margo Moore, Saint John, N.B.; two brothers, Peter Hughes, St. Stephen, N.B., and Burton Hughes, Alberta; several nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by his parents, Cyril and Marjorie (Quartley) Hughes; two brothers, Richard and Cyril (Junior); and sister, Beverley Laubman.
No visitation will be held by request.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Old Ridge Pentecostal Church, Route 3, Old Ridge, N.B., on Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2009 at 2 p.m.
A reception for family and friends will follow immediately after the service at the church.

Leavitt, Beverley Preston

The death of Beverley Preston Leavitt, husband of the late Rheta R. (English) Leavitt, occurred on Sunday, March 1, 2009, at his home in L’Etang, N.B. Beverley was born on Sept. 25, 1909 at L’Etang, N.B., the son of the late Elisha and Lilla (Hooper) Leavitt and was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Beverley is survived by one son, Dr. Preston (Barbara) Leavitt, of Fredericton, N.B.; one daughter, Rosalind Leavitt, of L’Etang, N.B.; grandchildren: Stephen (Allison) Leavitt, of Fredericton, N.B., Jeffrey (Bodil) of Whistler, B.C., and Natalie (Tom) Hart, of St. Stephen, N.B.; his great-grandchildren: Kathleen, Emily, and Alex; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his wife, Rheta, he was predeceased by sisters, Jean Weatherby, Lila, Muriel and Florence Leavitt; and brothers, Roland and Sanford Leavitt.
Beverley worked for many years for St. George Pulp and Paper and eventually retired from Connors Bros. at Blacks Harbour, N.B. He loved carpentry work and was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 15 F&AM; , St. George, N.B.
As keeping with Beverley’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. Following a Masonic Lodge Tribute Service, a graveside service will be held at the St. George Rural Cemetery, at a time to be announced in the spring.
In Bev’s memory, donations to a charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.

Tracy, Louise “Lois”

With her children at her bedside, the death of Louise “Lois” Tracy, of McAdam, N.B., occurred peacefully on Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2009 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital, Fredericton, N.B. The daughter of the late Bessie and Clair Laking, Lois was born in McAdam, N.B., on Dec. 1, 1924.
Lois was devoted to her family and is survived by her loving children: Sharon Tracy (David McKay), Fredericton, N.B.; Gary Tracy, Elaine (McIver), St. Stephen, N.B.; and Sandra Williams (James Williams), Pembroke, Ont.; sister, Jackie Lord (Alfred “Nert” Lord), McAdam, N.B.; brothers: Ron Laking (Colleen), Saint John, N.B., Paul Laking, Moncton, N.B., Clair Laking, Saint John, N.B., and Gene Laking (Lillian), Dryden, Ont.; nine cherished grandchildren: Michael DeWitt, Paula Williams, Gary Tracy, Mitchell DeWitt, Tracy DeWitt, Troy Tracy, Shawn Tracy, Trudy Hale and Deanna Tracy; eight great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Lois was predeceased by her beloved husband, Bernell; baby daughter, Louise; son, Leon (“Beaver”) and his wife Elaine Hale Tracy; grandson, Gerry Tracy; and two sisters, Ella Burrell and Hazel McNally.
Lois was a proud, respected and popular life-long resident of McAdam. She was an active member of the United Church of Canada and dedicated her time and energy to her family and her beloved community of McAdam. Although Lois’ travels to visit her children and grandchildren took her from the far reaches of northwestern Canada to Yankee Stadium, to Germany, there was no place like home.
In addition to her countless donations of hand knitted mittens and socks to various local organizations, Lois was the treasurer of McAdam Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary for more that 50 years, as well as continually supporting numerous community charities and causes.
In 1994, Lois was honoured by being appointed, by the Province of New Brunswick, as one of the first “Senior Goodwill Ambassadors” in recognition of her devoted service to her community. As well, Lois was treasurer of the Ladies Hospital Aid, and president of the McAdam Senior Citizens. Lois took great joy in her grandchildren and the youth of McAdam. Anyone who knew Lois was aware of her loyalty to the Toronto Maple Leafs, albeit an avid Wayne Gretzky fan.
In her later years, Lois greatly enjoyed watching the kids play hockey on her neighbour’s rink.
A celebration of her life was held at St. Paul’s United Church in McAdam, N.B., on Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009 at 2 p.m.
Visitation was held at the church on Friday, Feb. 27.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory may be made to the McAdam Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary or St. Paul’s United Church of Canada in McAdam.

McShane, Sallee Ann

Sallee Ann McShane, 72, went to be with her Lord and Saviour on Sunday, Jan. 18, 2009 at Calais Regional Hospital, Calais, Me. Sallee was born in St. Stephen, N.B., on Sept. 14, 1936, daughter of Frederick and Margaret (Redding) Talbot.
She graduated from Milltown High School in Milltown, N.B., and was employed as a nurse’s assistant for Calais Regional Hospital for over 30 years. Sallee was a faithful member of the Calais United Methodist Church, where she was the organist and a member of the United Methodist Women. She served on the Board of Directors for the Calais Methodist Homes, was a member of the Sweet Adelines, and volunteered as a caregiver and with hospice.
Sallee’s love for animals led her to rescue many in need. She enjoyed playing the organ, gardening, crafts, cooking, birdwatching and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Surviving Sallee are her mother, Margaret Talbot, of Rockland, Me.; her son, Robert McShane, of Calais, Me.; her daughter, Paula McShane, of Calais, Me.; son-in-law, Butch Speedy, of St. Stephen, N.B.; two brothers, Ted Talbot and wife, Shirley, of Owls Head, Me., and Robert Talbot and wife, Jo, of Rockland, Me.; four grandchildren, Brad and Jason Speedy, of St. Stephen, N.B., Tristan Greenlaw, of Fredericton, N.B., and Jackson Greenlaw of Calais, Me.; many nieces and nephews; her canine companion, Austin; and her two feline companions, Jasper and Junior.
Sallee was predeceased by her husband, Paul McShane, and a daughter, Ann Marie Speedy.
Visiting hours will be held from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. (U.S.), Tuesday, Jan. 20, at the Calais United Methodist Church, 849 Main St., Calais.
A celebration of Sallee’s life will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2009, in the church.
Burial will follow in Calais Cemetery.
Donations in Sallee’s memory may be made to either P.A.W.S. Humane Society, P.O. Box 182, Calais, ME 04619, or to Calais United Methodist Church, 849 Main St., Calais, ME 04619.
