Russell, Mary Elizabeth
Mary Elizabeth Russell (McConvey) passed away on March 27, 2009, at St. Stephen Seniors Complex, where she had been residing for the past seven years. She was born Dec. 13, 1915, daughter of George and Nora McConvey.
She worked at Ganong’s candy factory until she retired. She was a very active member of the Order of the Eastern Star, where she became Worthy Matron. Mary was best known by everyone young and old for her love of people and her quick wit, never failing to bring a smile to one’s face.
Many people considered her “The Peppermint Lady”, as she always carried peppermints to give to anyone she met during her day, which still carried on through her years at the nursing home. She captured everyone’s heart, young and old, and will be sadly missed.
She is survived by her only son, Dr. William Russell, of Windsor, Ont.; daughter-in-law, Connie; three grandchildren, Monica, Rod and Jeff and their spouses, and several great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Louis Puig, of St. Stephen, N.B., whom she lived with all her life until she became ill and resided as St. Stephen Seniors Complex.
Also survived by several nieces and a nephew: Sherry Hill, her husband, Stephen, their children - Tari, Darin and James; Arlene Parks, Myrna McConvey, Ken McConvey and his family; and Donna Walsh, Greg and John; also special grandnephews, Kevin Moholland and Nicholas Holmes.
Leighton, Eric Arthur
At Saint Joseph’s Hospital, Saint John, N.B., on March 23, 2009, Rev. Canon Eric Arthur Leighton, of St. Andrews, N.B.; husband of the late Nora Mavis (Smith) Leighton, and son of the late Ernest and Ruth (Holden) Leighton.
He leaves behind his only daughter, Mavis Anne Leighton-Burns (Rudolph), of Melbourne, Fla.; two granddaughters, Rae Mavis Thompson, of Saco, Me., and Erica May Thompson-Vardy (Adam), of Brooklyn, N.Y.
A memorial service will be held in St. Andrews, N.B., a later date to be announced.

Cookson, Helen Marie
Helen Marie (Bartlett) Cookson, 79, passed away Saturday, March 28, 2009 at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, Me. Helen was born in Calais, Me., on March 1, 1930, daughter of the late William and Zeltha (Smith) McLean.
Helen attended the Calais area schools and worked for many years at Ware Knitters, Sweet Things Bakery, and for the kitchen at Calais High School.
She was a Communicant of Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church in Calais, enjoyed crafts, cake decorating, going to camp, and spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Surviving is her husband of 30 years, Ross Cookson; four children, Peggy Fader, of Calais, Me., Gerry Bartlett and his wife, Sharon, of Calais, Me.; Carl Bartlett, of British Columbia; and Brenda Bartlett Dupuis and her husband, Paul, of St. Stephen, N.B.; her sister, Mary Porter, of Calais, Me.; four sisters-in-law, Marion McLean, of Calais, Me., Elizabeth McLean, of Massachusetts, Martha Bartlett, of St. Stephen, N.B., and Rachel Bartlett, of St. Stephen, N.B.; nine grandchildren, Julie Carrier and her husband, Michael, of Calais, Me., Timothy Fader and his wife, Shannon, of Brewer, Me., Amy McCoy and her husband, Mitchell, of Northwood, N.D., Melissa Cooper and her husband, Larry Joe, of Calais, Me., Joseph Bartlett and his companion, Roliza DeWitt, of Calais, Me., Christopher Bartlett, of Calais, Me., Jessica Bartlett, of Fredericton, N.B., Mandy Beaman and her companion, Brent Dunn, of St. Stephen, N.B., and Matthew Fraser, of Woodstock, N.B.; a step-grandson, Joshua Dupuis, of St. Stephen, N.B.; 14 great-grandchildren, Courtney Carrier, Devon Carrier, Ian Fader, Lane McCoy, Destiny McCoy, Maisie Hurd, Isabella McDonald, Noah Bartlett, Patrick Bartlett, Jordan Bartlett, Zeke Beaman, Ayden Dunn, Kinzie Dunn and Brodie Montgomery; many stepchildren and their families, and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Helen was predeceased by her first husband, Carl Bartlett, in 1953; and five brothers, John, Wallace, Ralph, Frank and Robert McLean.
A celebration of Helen’s life will be held at 11 a.m. (EST) Saturday, April 4, 2009 at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais, Me. Burial will follow in Calais Cemetery.

Linton, Florence Viola
At Passamaquoddy Lodge, St. Andrews, N.B., March 27, 2009, Florence Viola Linton, wife of the late Harry Cheever Linton and daughter of the late Wesley and Eva (Johnson) Malloch.
Survived by four sons, four daughters, several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, one sister and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service was held from the Upper Mills United Church, Upper Mills, N.B., on Monday, March 30, 2009 at 2 p.m.
There was no visitation by request.

MacKenney, Ruby Helena
The death of Ruby Helena MacKenney, wife of the late Vincent S. MacKenney, of Campobello Lodge, formerly of Deer Island, N.B., occurred on March 27, 2009, at the Charlotte County Hospital, St. Stephen, N.B., following a brief illness. Born at Lambertville, Deer Island, N.B., on Jan. 19, 1921, she was a daughter of the late Jesse and Harriet (Morang) Lambert.
A loving mother, she is survived by one daughter, Donna (Mrs. Paul Rogers), of Kearny, N.J., and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her husband, Vincent, she was predeceased by one brother, Herman Lambert, and by one sister, Viola Russell.
In her active years, Ruby was an active member with the Deer Island Seniors, as well as a member of the Lord’s Cove Church of Christ, Deer Island, N.B. She was both a loving and caring wife and mother to her beloved husband and daughter.
By Ruby’s request, there will be no visiting or service.
A graveside service will be held in July at Fairhaven Community Cemetery at Calder’s Head, N.B., at a time to be announced.
In Ruby’s memory, donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association or to a charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.

O’Neill, Francis Arthur
At the Charlotte County Hospital, St. Stephen, N.B., on March 30, 2009, Francis Arthur O’Neill, husband of Mrs. Theresa (Joseph) O’Neill, of Pennfield. N.B. Born at Blacks Harbour, N.B., on Jan. 11, 1937, he was the son of the late Arthur and Kathryn Flora (Pendleton) O’Neill.
A loving husband, father, grandfather and brother, in addition to his wife, Theresa, he is survived by two sons, John (Michelle) O’Neill and Jack (Monica) O’Neill, both of Pennfield, N.B.; one daughter, Kathy O’Neill (Billy Anderson), of Blacks Harbour, N.B.; six grandchildren: Brittany O’Neill, Jeremy O’Neill, Theresa Anderson, Emily, Haley and Devon O’Neill; five sisters: Janet (Frank) Cronin, of Fredericton, N.B., Glenna (Robert) Leavitt and Anita Hennessey, both of Blacks Harbour, N.B., Sharon (Joseph) Likely, of Calgary, Alta., and Sheila (Myer) Yanofsky, of Utopia, N.B., and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by one brother, James.
Francis was a fisherman by trade and this was his life for more then 40 years. He operated sardine carriers for Connor’s Bros. and later seiners, as he captained both the Eastern Phoenix and the Canada 100.
He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed bass fishing and hunting, and spending time at the cottage at Lake Utopia. He served in the American Army for two years and was a member of the N.B. Bass Fisherman’s Association and the
St. George Masonic Lodge No. 12 F & AM.
He was a friend to many and will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
Resting at the Sea View Full Gospel Church, Back Bay, N.B., from where the service will be held on Thursday, April 2, 2009 at 2 p.m., with Rev. Gordon Cooke officiating.
Interment will be held at the Stella Maris Roman Catholic Cemetery, Blacks Harbour, N.B., in the spring.
Visiting at the church on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., and on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Charlotte County Cancer Society, the Canadian Diabetes Association, or to a charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
There will be a Masonic Tribute Service held at the church on Wednesday at 6:45 p.m.

Swanston, Charles Rowland “Roy”
Unexpectedly at the Saint John Regional Hospital, Saint John, N.B., on March 25, 2009, Charles Rowland "Roy" Swanston, husband of the late Mrs. Marion Swanston, of Pennfield, N.B. Roy was born in Lincoln, England, on July 9, 1921.
A loving father, grandfather and brother, he is survived by two sons: Terry (Gisele) Swanston and Kirk (Mona) Swanston, both of Pennfield, N.B.; one granddaughter, Stephanie Henry, of St. George, N.B.; one great-granddaughter, Abigail Henry; one sister, Demi Stevens, of Lincoln, England; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his wife, Marion, he was predeceased by one son, Gary, two brothers, Alec and Cyril, and by three sisters, Florie, Emma and Sylvie.
Roy served overseas with the British Army and later the RAF in World War II. He came to Canada to train at the base located at Pennfield, N.B., in 1943, where he met and married his bride, Marion. He then returned to England until the end of the war, finally returning back to Canada, where he spent the remainder of his days. He was a stationery engineer by trade and worked for many years at CFB Gagetown. He then moved to Pennfield and worked for Connor’s Bros. until his retirement.
Roy was an avid golfer and bowler and an active member of the Pennfield Baptist Church.
Rested at the Pennfield Baptist Church where visiting was held on Friday, March 27.
The service was held at the church on Saturday, March 28, 2009 at 2 p.m., with Rev. Grant Alcorn officiating.
The interment will take place at the Pennfield Rural Cemetery in the spring.
There was a Royal Canadian Legion Tribute Service held at the church on Friday at 7 p.m.
In Roy’s memory, donations to a charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.

Hiltz, Madeline Georgia
At the Charlotte County Hospital, St. Stephen, N.B., on March 24, 2009, Madeline Georgia Hiltz. She was the wife of the late Vernon Edward Hiltz and daughter of the late Beryl Attine and Lillian Carson (McFarlane) McGlinchey.
Survived by her son, Wayne; granddaughter, Stacey; three sisters, Phyllis Russell (Layton), of Oak Hill, N.B., Kaye McGibbon, of Moores Mills, N.B., and Pearl Kaine, of St. Stephen, N.B.; two brothers, Carson McGlinchey, of St. Stephen, N.B., and Norman McGlinchey (Florence) of Oak Hill, N.B.; several nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by her sisters, Annie Rideout and Hazel Mawdslay.
Rested at The S.O. Mehan & Son Funeral Home Ltd., 23 Main Street, St. Stephen, N.B., from where the funeral service was held on Saturday, March 28, 2009 at 2 p.m.
Visiting hours were held at the funeral home on Friday.
