Matheson, Vera Viola

Peacefully, following a brief illness, Vera Viola (Sellars) Matheson, wife of the late Albert D. Matheson, of Upper L’Etang, N.B., passed away at the Charlotte County Hospital, St. Stephen, N.B., on Aug. 4, 2009. Born in Pennfield, N.B., on Feb. 2, 1922, she was the youngest child of the late Harold G. and Jane V. (Hunter) Sellars.
A loving mother, grandmother and sister, she is survived by one daughter, Alberta Cooke (Raye), of St. George, N.B.; one son, William Matheson (Marion), of Fairview, Alta.; three grandchildren: Krista Cooke (Colin O’Leary), of St. George, N.B., Melissa Matheson, of Saint John, N.B., and Jeff Matheson (Beverley), of Canal, N.B.; three great-grandchildren: Josie and Katie Matheson, of Canal, N.B., and Emma-Lee O’Leary, of St. George, N.B.; one brother, Gordon Sellars (Marion), of Pennfield, N.B., and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her husband, Albert, she was predeceased by a granddaughter, Heather Cook; three sisters, Helen Powell, Marion Carter and Margaret Sellars; and by four brothers, Horace, Frank, Raymond and Baby Harold.
Through most of her life Vera was a devoted homemaker, making sure everyone who walked through her door was well taken care of. She enjoyed quilting and met with the Bonny River Quilters when able. Vera was a member of the Presbyterian Kirk, St. George, N.B., and will be missed by her family and many friends.
Resting at the St. George Funeral Home & Crematorium, 26 Portage Street, St. George, N.B., with visiting on Thursday from 7-9 p.m.
The service will be held from the Presbyterian Kirk, St. George, N.B., on Friday, Aug. 7, 2009 at 2 p.m., with Rev. Dr. Stephen Cho officiating, followed by interment at the St. George Rural Cemetery.
Family flowers only please.
In Vera’s memory, donations to the Presbyterian Kirk, St. George, or to a charity of the donor’s choice would be greatly appreciated by the family.

Fraser, Helen Dorothy

Sept. 28, 1926 – July 27, 2009
On July 27, 2009, we said our goodbyes to a very dear mother, sister and special aunt, Helen Dorothy Fraser (Brewer).
Helen was the daughter of George and Florence Brewer. She was married on Aug. 20, 1955 to Donald Fraser. She was predeceased by her husband in September, 1993.
She is survived by one son, Donald Fraser, Jr.; her loving, caring sister, Loretta Duplisses, who has been by her side caring for her to the very end; one brother, David Brewer (Bunn), of Brantford, Ont.; one sister-in-law, Anne Brewer, Brantford, Ont.; and two brothers-in-law, Earl Fraser and Clayton O’Brien, both of St. Stephen, N.B.
Helen worked at Ganong’s, and at the cotton mill until it closed in 1957. She cared for her mother and then she worked for several years for Becks Nursing Home and Lincourt Manor.
Helen had many friends; she was so much fun to be with. When Helen was young, she would always be at the dances in the area; she loved to dance.
All those who knew Helen will always remember her for her great sense of humour and all the joy and laughter she brought to those around her. She was a loving, caring person.
Helen was a member of the St. Stephen’s Catholic Church and a member of the C.W.L. for 59 years.
Arrangements were conducted by Humphreys’ Funeral Home.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. John Keoughan officiating.
Organist was Mary Lou Graham, and the choir sang The Lord’s Prayer and How Great Thou Art. Soloist David Humphreys sang Abide With Me.
Pallbearers were Tom Booth, Mike Booth, Bill Booth and Robbie Seeley.
Interment in the Milltown Catholic Cemetery.

O’Brien, Mary Eileen

At the Saint John Regional Hospital, Saint John, N.B., on Aug. 6, 2009, Ms. Mary Eileen O’Brien, of Pennfield, N.B. Born in St. Stephen, N.B., on Jan. 20, 1937, she was the daughter of the late James and Margaret (Hawkins) O’Brien.
Survived by one aunt, Lois Hawkins, of Pennfield, N.B., and several cousins.
Arrangements are not complete at this time.
A memorial service will be held at the Gary E. Waycott Memorial Chapel, St. George, N.B., at a time to be announced.

Stewart, Gladys Kathleen (Hawkins)

Gladys Kathleen (Hawkins) Stewart passed away at the Laurentian Hospital in Sudbury, Ont., on July 24, 2009 after a lengthy battle with Multiple Sclerosis. Born in Beaver Harbour, N.B., on Aug. 7, 1926, she was a daughter of the late Arthur and Lena (Dickson) Hawkins.
She was the wife of the late William P. Stewart (Bill); loving mother of Wendy Beauchamp (Garvin), Gale LeBlanc (Ray), Paul (Audrey), Lorrie Beausoleil (Roy), Scott (Kathy) and Marsha Best (Sandy); survived by 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; sister, Lila Wright, Sudbury, Ont., and brother, James Hawkins, Beaver Harbour, N.B.
She was predeceased by brothers, Floyd and Malcolm.
Funeral service was held on July 26, 2009 from Loughheed Funeral Home, Sudbury, Ont.

Mahar, Roger Dale

Unexpectedly, at the Saint John Regional Hospital, Saint John, N.B., on Aug. 9 2009, Roger Dale Mahar, husband
of Rose (Cook) Mahar, of Blacks Harbour, N.B.; born at Blacks Harbour, N.B., on April 11, 1951, he was a son of the late Sylvanus and Hazel Belle (Cooke) Mahar.
A loving husband, father, special grandfather and brother, in addition to his wife, Rose, he is survived by one son, Adam (Samantha Cobham), of Blacks Harbour, N.B.; five brothers: Howard (Shirley), of Truro, N.S., Robert (Betty), of Penticton, B.C., David (Eliza), of Blacks Harbour, N.B., Allen (Glenna), of Pennfield, N.B., and Randy (Trudy), of Edmonton, Alta.; six sisters, Dawn (Calvin) Justason, of Pennfield, N.B., Lucy Tracy, of Utopia, N.B., Janice (Ralph) Justason, of Seeley’s Cove, N.B. Norma (Gerald) Belliveau and Dorothy (Mike) Barry, both of Pennfield, N.B., and Beth Mahar, of Blacks Harbour, N.B.; as well as several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins; special friends, Alan (Linda) Brown, of Grand Manan, N.B., and special island grandchildren, Dominick and Shyloh.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by one sister, Patricia Seeley.
Roger was previously employed by Connors Bros. for over 35 years. He was a member and dispatcher with the Blacks Harbour Fire Department for 20 years.
Roger was very involved with his community as he was a fixture at the Blacks Harbour Arena for many years, whether it be officiating at hockey games both on and off the ice and later, as the announcer in the penalty box for the Blacks Harbour Silverkings and Jr. Silverkings, Fundy League and any arena function. He was also president of Connors Bros. Softball League and will be remembered as a very special person at Christmas time.
Friends are invited to a time of visitation at the Calvary Baptist Church, Blacks Harbour, N.B., on Wednesday evening from 7-9 p.m.
A celebration of Roger’s life will be held at the church on Sunday, Aug. 16, 2009 at 2 p.m., with Rev. Bruce Alcorn officiating.
Interment will be held at the Pennfield Rural Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Roger’s memory made to the Calvary Baptist Church, NB Heart & Stroke Foundation or the Charlotte County Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family.

Morse, Lawrence Ralph

With his loving family by his side, on Friday, Aug. 7, 2009, Lawrence Ralph Morse, of White Head Island, N.B., passed away at the Grand Manan Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. Born Sept. 23, 1929, he was the son of the late Henry and Lillian (Cheney) Morse.
Lawrence loved and raised his family on White Head Island with his loving wife, Johanna, by his side. He partnered with Clyne Zwicker, working hard as a lobster fisherman and also in the smoked herring business. Upon retirement, he excelled in his talent as a woodworking craftsman, building lighthouses, furniture, many other items and specialized in kitchen garbage boxes. Many homes in Canada, from Vancouver to Newfoundland, in the United States from Maine to Florida, and even England and Holland can boast a fine craft made from "Gramps Island Crafts". He was a member of the White Head Baptist Church and will be sadly missed by his many friends.
Over the years, Lawrence and Johanna developed many deep and lasting friendships as they opened their home to family, friends and strangers. During Lawrence's illness, his greatest enjoyment was in all the visits he received from family and friends far and near.
Lawrence is survived by his wife of 57 years, Johanna (Mourik) Morse; one daughter, Doreen Christie (Chico), of Hampton, N.B.; one son, Allen Morse (Sonya), of Grand Manan, N.B.; his four grandchildren, Derek Christie (Radecia), Amanda Christie, Aaron and Trevor Morse; one brother, Myron Morse (Karen); several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Lawrence was predeceased by their infant son, Brian Lawrence.
Visiting was held from the White Head Baptist Church on Sunday.
The funeral service took place from the church on Monday, Aug. 10, 2009 at 2:15 p.m., with Pastor Jim Appleby officiating.
The interment followed at the White Head Community Cemetery.
Donations in memory of Lawrence can be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
Funeral arrangements are in the care of Ells Funeral Home, 1199 Route 776, Grand Manan, NB E5G 1G2.

Porter, Katherine (Tish)

Katherine (Tish) Porter passed away on Aug. 5, 2009, at home, surrounded by family. She was born in St. Stephen, N.B., the daughter of Norval and Charlotte Dennison.
After graduating from St. Stephen High School, she worked for the Canadian National Telegraph office. She then moved to Calais, Me., where she worked for Ware Knitters for 39 years.
She was an avid reader and loved crossword puzzles. She loved the outdoors and gardening.
She was predeceased by her husband, Harry Porter. She also lost a sister, Helen, at the age of four; and a special friend of 68 years, Doris Tracy.
She is survived by two daughters, Joanne Wheelock and husband, Gary, of Calais, Me., and Paula McVicar, of Bangor, Me.; three sons, David Porter and wife, Teresa, of Calais, Me., Kenneth Porter and wife, Dianne, of Baring, Me., and Tommy Porter, of Old Town, Me. She had 11 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. She is also survived by two sisters, Marie Coyne, of St. Stephen, N.B., and Shirley Scott, of Oromocto, N.B.; one brother, Eugene Dennison, of California; and several nieces and nephews.
As requested, there will be no funeral or visiting hours.
Burial will be at a later date.
There will be a gathering at 60 Swan Street, Calais, Me., for family and friends on Sunday, Aug. 16, 2009 at 1 p.m. (US time).

Tocchio, E. Michael

E. Michael Tocchio, 93, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2009 at the Calais Regional Hospital, Calais, Me. Michael was born in Quincy, Mass., on March 31, 1916. After graduating from high school, he worked in the shipyards and joined the Army National Guard for several years. Michael eventually owned and operated his own construction company, building new homes and buildings.
On Dec. 27, 1973, he married Patricia Hogue in St. Stephen, N.B., and they soon relocated to the Calais area. Along with his wife, Michael owned and operated her family business, Pat’s Dairy Café on Whitney Street in Calais.
He enjoyed reading, golfing and traveling.
Surviving are his loving wife of over 35 years, Patricia Tocchio; two children, Louis Tocchio and his wife, Sandra, of Hudson, Fla., and Judy Erikson and her husband, Russell, of Rockland, Mass.; a brother, Otto Tocchio and his wife, Marion, of Fresno, Calif.; two grandchildren, James Tocchio and his wife, Samantha, of Hoboken, N.J., and Susan Leonard and her husband, Kenneth, of Weymouth, Mass.; and two great-grandchildren, Meghan and Emily Leonard.
Visiting hours will be held from 5–8 p.m. (U.S. time) Thursday, Aug. 13, at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. (U.S.) on Friday, Aug. 14, 2009 at the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church in Calais, Me.
Burial will be held at 6:30 p.m. (U.S.) Saturday in the Milltown Catholic Cemetery, Milltown, N.B.

Colwell, Helen Marguerite

Helen went to be with Jesus on Aug. 13, 2009. She is survived by her best friend and companion of 44 years, Maude Doughty. Mother of one son, James "Jay" Doughty and daughter Rebekah (David) Gillmor; two special grandchildren, Prescott and David Gillmor, Jr.; two sisters, Isabelle Spicer and Charlene (Doug) Rouse; two brothers, Rupert (Mary) and Laurin (Carley) Colwell, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Helen was a French and Business teacher for 35 years, retiring in 1978, then became co-owner of Maudie’s restaurant "Ship Ahoy" on Deer Island. She taught in Quebec at Laval West St. Halaire – St. Eustache and then at Chomedy High and Fundy High in New Brunswick.
She and Maudie travelled to many places across the U.S.A. by motorhome, also going on cruises seeing such places as Barbados, Haiti, and Cuba and spent the winter in Florida.
Helen was loved and respected by all those who knew her. She had a heart of gold and a love of God. She will be sadly missed and forever loved. God has her in His keeping but we have her in our hearts. She will also be sadly missed by her animals, especially Little Lad and Honky Tonky. God bless you, my love! A special thank you to a special friend, Mary Anne Staples, for being there for Helen and all of us.
