1924 - 2019
Ruth E. Barnes, 95, of Moncton NB, passed away peacefully at home on April 22, 2019 surrounded by dedicated caregivers and friends. She was born in Kars, Ontario on March 31, 1924, the daughter of the late Stewart and Ella Craig.
Ruth owned and operated the Ruth Barnes Modeling Agency from 1966 to 2014. Many young people passed through her doors taking self–improvement and modeling classes, and some remained friends for many years up until her passing. During her career, Ruth ran her school, coordinated fashion shows, did advertising work, and even got to work with several Canadian fashion designers. Ruth also had her models participate in modeling competitions in Toronto and some of her models went on to have a professional careers. Although she was a true professional, Ruth also enjoyed the social aspect of the fashion world. Her loving husband, Tom (Tom Barnes Photography) was at her side and they made quite a team.
Ruth loved the written word. She was an avid reader, read newspaper daily to keep up with current events, and also wrote personal letters, poems, as well as thank you cards to her friends and family. She was also interested in baseball, and was a true fan of her beloved Blue Jays.
In 2014, Ruth was presented with the YWCA Women of Distinction Award for her exemplary contribution in her field and for having elevated other women and girls in the local community. She was also the recipient of the Paul Harris Fellowship Award for her lifelong commitment to young people in her community sponsored by the Moncton Rotary Club.
Ruth was well liked and respected by all who knew her. She had many friends outside the fashion world, and these friends were very important to her. Her face lit up when they called or came for a visit. Ruth was very appreciative of all the thoughts and care given by her friends.
Ruth will be remembered for her kind and caring ways. She was always kind to her caregivers, and they were kind and loving to her. For their dedication we sincerely thank them. A special thank you also goes out to Patricia Guitard for taking care of Ruth and Tom these last five years. Pat is like a daughter to them.
The tragedy of Ruth’s life was the loss of her precious daughter, Jennifer, who passed away in 1969 at the age of 9. The pain she suffered all these years has been lifted, and she finally gets to hold Jennifer in her arms.
