Patrick Michael Callaghan
1927-2009

The death of Patrick Michael Callaghan of Fredericton, occurred at the Dr. Chalmers Regional Hospital on January 5, 2009 at the age of 81.
Born in 1927 at Dumbarton, Scotland, son of the late Thomas and Catherine Callaghan, he served his country during the Second World War with the Argyle & Sutherland Highlanders while stationed in Austria.
After immigrating to Canada, he worked at Base Gagetown when the base was constructed. Later he joined the firm of Robin Kilburn – the window cleaning department after which he worked in the recreation dept of the City of Fredericton as supervisor of O’Dell Park Lodge. He was a member & co-founder of the New Brunswick N.D.P. in Fredericton; a life member of the Scottish Cultural Association of NB and also past president of St. Andrew Society & former member of the St. Andrew’s Pipe Band.
Pat was a soccer enthusiast & co-founder of youth soccer in Fredericton, having coached for a number of years & will be fondly remembered by the many young people he introduced to the game of soccer.
He is survived by his wife Catherine (MacLellan) Callaghan; sons Malcolm of Vancouver and Patrick C. of Halifax; sisters Mary (John) Montgomery, Cathy Gow and Bridget Callaghan; nieces and nephews. Predeceased by parents; brother Thomas and niece Anne Marie of Scotland.
Following cremation, a funeral service will be held on Thursday January 8, 2009 at 2:00 PM from Bishop’s Funeral Home Chapel, 540 Woodstock Road with Rev. Jack Dolan officiating. Interment at a later date. The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch # 4 will hold a tribute at the funeral service. No flowers by request, for those who wish memorials may be made to the Shelter for the Homeless or a charity of the donor’s choice.
The family would like to express a special thank you to Dr. D. G. Flower, the nurses and staff of 4NW for their care for Patrick during his stay in hospital.

Ruhundwa Ruganda
1965-2009

Ruhundwa Ruganda, of Fredericton, NB, passed away suddenly on January 20, 2009. Ruhundwa is survived by his children; Larissa, Tamara, Nathan and Ashley. In addition to his children, he survived by his mother, father, sisters, brothers, nieces, nephews and a large extended family.
A private service with family and close friends will be held on Friday January 23, 2009. For those who wish to make a donation the family has suggested a charity of their choice.

Elsie Elizabeth Derry
1921-2008

The passing of Elsie Elizabeth Derry occurred at White Rapid’s Manor, Fredericton Junction, NB on Wednesday, December 31, 2008. She was 87. Born January 5, 1921 in England, she was the daughter of the late James R. and Amelia E. (Taylor) Maddox. She was a War Bride and a Veteran of WWII and saw live action during the war. She served with the British Air Force. Elsie was Anglican by faith. She was affectionately known as “Ducky”.
Surviving are her four children, Elsie Thompson and Frances Hurley both of Calgary, Alberta, Ronald and Michael Derry both of Traceyville, NB; four grandchildren, Tina of Calgary, John and James both of Ontario and Elizabeth of Miramichi, NB; nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, her husband Bruce Franklin “Frank” Derry and a son Frank Jr. also predeceased her.
The will be no visitation or funeral service at this time. A graveside committal service will be held at a later date.

Bertha A. Morton
1915-2009

At her home in Maugerville, NB on Saturday, January 10, 2009 Bertha Alice Morton completed her earthly journey and went home to be with her Lord. She was 93. Born December 4, 1915 at West Branch, Kent Co., NB, she was the daughter of the late William Smith Morton and Phoebe Eva (MacLeod) Morton. Bertha was Baptist by faith and a Life Member of Maugerville Women’s Institute.
Bertha is survived by a son Keith Morton and two daughters, Sandra Day (Raymond) and Elizabeth “Betty” Morton all of Maugerville; 10 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren; a special son-in-law Carl Wilkinson; a brother Charles Morton of West Branch and three sisters Mildred Girvan of Kincardine, Laura McLean of Chatham and Edna Palmer of Moncton; three sisters-in-law Mary Morton, Doris Morton and Kathleen Morton; several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, her husband Donald Edwin Morton, a daughter Myrna Wilkinson, a son Murray Morton, three grandchildren, one great grandchild, sisters Ruby Phillips, Eva Hicks, Marion Morton and brothers Lloyd, Carmen and Earl all predeceased her.
Resting at Bishop’s Funeral Home, 540 Woodstock Road, Fredericton on Monday, January 12 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. A celebration of Bertha’s life will be held from Bishop’s Funeral Home Chapel on Tuesday, January 13 at 2:00 PM. Rev. Neil Sampson will officiate. Interment in the Maugerville Baptist Cemetery at a later date. The family would appreciate memorials to the I.W.K. Health Center Foundation or the Maugerville Baptist Cemetery Fund in Bertha’s memory.

Alvin "Brownie" Brown
1911-2009

It is with much sadness that we announce the passing of Alvin “Brownie” Brown, January 8, following a brief illness at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital. He was 97. He was born September 7, 1911 at Hardwood Ridge, the son of the late James and Maude (Higgins) Brown. The last surviving member of his immediate family, in addition to his parents he was predeceased by one brother and three sisters.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary (True) Brown; daughters Linda of Calgary, Nancy of Fredericton; sons Robert (Laura MacLean) of New Maryland and Larry (Kim Long) of Fredericton. Also survived by daughters Elaine (Pat Butler) of Ontario and Phyllis (Arthur Knox) of Chipman and his grandchildren, great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Brownie faithfully attended Gibson Memorial United Church, serving as an usher for more than 30 years. He worked in the woods and in construction retiring from NBEPC in 1977.
Proud of his family, his home, his Barkers Point neighbourhood, his view of the Saint John River, his friends and his stamina, he will be deeply missed. He took great enjoyment tending his large vegetable garden and camping, spending many weeks at Mactaquac, Princess Park, Oak Bay and Bangor, Maine.
Visitation will be held at Bishop’s Funeral Home, 540 Woodstock Road, Fredericton on Sunday, January 11 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. The funeral service will be held at Gibson Memorial United Church, Monday, January 12 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Boyd Vincent officiating. Reception to follow. Active pallbearers will be Andy Scott, Robin Rickard, Wyatt Dutcher, Jonathan Waye, Art Knox and Ken Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be Alley Jewett, Dick Yeomans, Boyd MacTavish, Gene Dorcas and Leland Henry. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the NB Chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of choice.

Winifred Demmings Miles

It is with much sadness that we announce the passing of Winifred Miles, January 20, 2009, at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital. Born in Aroostook Jct. NB, she was a daughter of the late Rev. R. W. and Laura (Hopkins) Demmings and wife of the late Lee Branscombe Miles. Winifred was a member of Brunswick Street Baptist Church for over 60 years as well as a member of Ben-Evelyn (missionary society).
Survived by her daughter Katherine Bishop (Kathy); sons James “Jim” Miles (Regi) and Eric Miles all of Fredericton; 3 grandsons Craig and Kurtis Miles of Calgary, and Lee Bishop (Erika) of Fredericton; granddaughter Lisa Lambert (Mark) of Ottawa; step-granddaughter Kerri Schriver; step-grandson Chris Larsen (Leslie); step-great granddaughters Bailey and Paige Larsen; 5 great grandchildren Lauren, Daniel and John Lambert, Nathan and Ashlynn Bishop; sisters in law Margaret Demmings of Woodstock and Audrey Miles of Winnipeg; nieces, nephews and cousins; as well as special friend Jeanne Bango of Montreal. Predeceased by her brothers Lorimer Demmings (Barb) and Gerald Demmings; sisters Dorothy Merchant (Jack) and Jean Warnock (Borden); son-in-law Gerald Bishop; grandson Daniel (Danny) Bishop.
Visitation will be held at Bishop’s Funeral Home, 540 Woodstock Road, Fredericton on Friday, January 23, 2009 from 2-4 & 7- 9 PM. Funeral service will be held at Bishop’s Funeral Home Chapel, on Saturday, January 24, 2009 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Ralph Irving officiating. Reception to follow. Interment at a later date. For those who wish memorials may be made to the Alzheimers Society or charity of the donor’s choice.

Susan Dawn Brewer
1962-2008

At home on Wednesday December 24, 2008, Susan Dawn Brewer of Fredericton passed away at the age of 46. Born in Fredericton, NB, she was a daughter of Hazel Timms and the late Thomas Phillips. Susan was a homemaker and was Baptist by faith. She was a volunteer at York Manor Nursing Home, with the United Way, and very actively involved in Para Skate.
She is survived by her husband David Brewer; son Adam; daughter Holly; mother Hazel Timms and step father Gerald (Sonny) Timms; sister Paulette McLean (Phillips)(Larry); brothers Tim Phillips, and Kim Phillips (Karen); mother in law Joan Brewer; sister in law Elaine; brother in law Andy Brewer; step sisters Peggy, and Natalie, and a step brother Sam, several nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.
Cremation to take place. A funeral service will be held from Bishop’s Funeral Home Chapel on Wednesday December 31, 2008 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Paul Thompson officiating. Interment at a later date. For those who wish memorials may be made to the NB Heart and Stroke Foundation. Following the service, a reception will take place at 17 McMurtrie Ave in Sunrise Estates in New Maryland.
