Calvin William Harvey
1924 – 2003
Peacefully on Saturday, September 27, 2003 Cal Harvey beloved husband, father and Poppa passed away at the Health Sciences Centre, Winnipeg..
Cal leaves to mourn, his beloved wife Helen of Winnipeg; daughters Bonnie (Gordie) Gadway of Portage la Prairie and Marsha (Terry) Adcock of Calgary; and his very special grandchildren Christopher, Tara (Brad), Tracy and Leslie.
He is also survived by his brothers Vernon (Rene), Bob (Stephanie), sister Isobel (Norman) Hyorth, sisters-in-law Marion (Jim) Wood, Jean Common, Sherri Common and brother-in-law John (Elaine) Common. He was a special “Uncle Cap” to several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother and sister-in-law Fred and Francis Harvey and brothers-in-law Lorne and Murray Common.
Cal was born June 27, 1924 in Antler, Saskatchewan. In his early teens the family moved to the Bradwardine area. He served his country in the Second World War in the Royal Canadian Navy aboard the battleship Gattineau. In October 1947 he married Helen his devoted wife of 57 years. Throughout his working career he was employed as a grain buyer for Manitoba Pool Elevators and a field representative for Manitoba Sugar Company. His jobs took him to several small communities throughout the province. He retired from the Manitoba Sugar Co. in 1989. Cal was a member of the St. James Royal Canadian Legion.
In his younger years he enjoyed curling, fishing, golfing and baseball. One of his proudest moments was in June 2000 when he was inducted into the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame with the McConnell team.
His pride and joy were his four grandchildren. He was their very special “Poppa”. One of his favorite pastimes was fishing with his grandson Christopher.
Cremation has taken place and the funeral will be held on Thursday, October 2, 2003 at 2:00 pm at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel, Portage la Prairie, with Rev. Ross Taylor officiating.

Ila Bell Owens (nee Sampson )
It is with great sadness that the family of Ila Bell Owens announces her death on Friday, September 19, 2003 at the Portage District General Hospital.
Raised in Glenboro MB, she was the third eldest in a family of seven children. She was predeceased by her husband Harvey; sisters Lola and Nita and brother Dolph.
She trained as a Registered Nurse at the Brandon General Hospital, graduating in 1928, just prior to the depression. She did what was called “private duty nursing” in homes in southern Manitoba. This, through sheer necessity, involved delivering babies and giving care that she often remarked, was far beyond what she had been trained to do. She was employed in the Glenboro General Practitioner’s Office and in the small community hospital of Deloraine before striking out for “greener pastures” at the West Coast.
As jobs were scarce, she took a hospital nursing position in the remote logging community of Port Alice on the northwest coast of Vancouver Island.
At that time, this isolated village was only accessible by the small supply boats that plied the rough, and many times treacherous waters of the Pacific. One of her duties was to accompany patients being transferred to Vancouver via these same small crafts, the most famous of which was the Good Ship Maquinna. Despite the dangers of the open sea, she claimed the recess from the isolation, made these journeys ones she relished.
She returned to Glenboro to care for an ailing mother and in 1935, destiny decreed that she spend the remainder of her life in Portage la Prairie. She met her husband Harvey Hunter Owens that summer at a dance in Gladstone which she attended with her lifelong nursing friend, Robena Campbell. Her life in Portage gave her the opportunity to raise a family and to touch the lives of many individuals in this community. Some are gone now, and some will be reading this notice and will know that they helped to make her life such a happy one.
She will be remembered as “Gram”, the loving and the natural center of a large and extended family. Despite the many and varied needs of it’s members, she seemed always to have time to listen and nurture each member of this family individually. Her positive spirit, her laughter, her ability to continue to contribute to the well-being of others despite her age, will always be an inspiration to the family that adored her.
She is survived by her sisters Vivian McLeod, Vesta Douglas and Lorene Magnus; daughters Sherrill Collett, Arlene (Gary) Lamont and Heather (Bob) Sellars and grandchildren and their families; Patti (Dennis) with children Darren and Owen Nodrick, Kelly (Lou) with children Keegan and Bret Collett; Carol Ann Collett (Mike); Robert Bradley; Jill Bradley; Danny (Kathy) Bradley; Alison (Dave) with children Foster and Monroe Laycraft; John Arbuthnott Jr.; Marney (Scott) with children Braedan, Cole and Adam Young; and Andrew Abuthnott (Amy).
In keeping with Ila’s wishes, there will be no funeral service . The family gratefully declines flowers.
Ronald Edward Robson
On Friday, September 12, 2003 Ronald Edward Robson passed away in Portage la Prairie.
He was predeceased by his parents Herbert and Irma Robson. Ron leaves behind two children Lisa of Winnipeg and David of Sandy Bay, one grandchild of Winnipeg, sister Arlene (Gord) Dell of Portage la Prairie and brothers Keith (Mary) of Calgary and Doug of Portage la Prairie and their families along with aunts, uncles, cousins and special friends in Portage Bev Gale, Raymond Bernard, Bill Dirks and Dorothy Lowe.
Ron spent thirty years of his life driving taxi where he met many special people. He was an active participant in flea markets and found much pleasure in traveling around Manitoba to various flea markets and pow wows. He enjoyed watching all kinds of sports and having coffee with his friends. Ron will be remembered for his good sense of humor and his good-natured ways.
In keeping with Ron’s wishes there will be no formal funeral service. For those who would like to share in remembering Ron, you are invited to a farewell lunch on Wednesday evening, September 17, 2003 at 7:00 pm at the Lion’s Den located south of Splash Island on Island Park. Interment will follow at about 8:00 pm

Dale James Brown
Dale James Brown, formerly of Oakville MB, passed away suddenly on Friday, August 29, 2003 at the age of 54 years in Strathmore Alberta.
He will be lovingly remembered by Louise, his wife of thirty one years, his two children Mike (Nadean) and Connie (Duane) and three grandchildren Trae, Seth and Bailey. Dale also leaves behind his sister Ellen (Gil) Nicolas and her family all of Edmonton AB and sister Debbie (Eric) Murray and her family all of Portage la Prairie as well as several other nieces, nephews and cousins. Dale was predeceased by his parents Reuben and Margaret.
Dale will be greatly missed by all who knew him and will never be forgotten by anyone whose life he has touched.
A Graveside service will take place on Saturday, September 27, 2003 at Hillside Cemetery. Those wishing to attend may gather at the cemetery for a 1:00 pm committal.

Alec Fraser Cuthbert
It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Alec Fraser Cuthbert on Friday, September 19, 2003 at the age of 50 years.
He was predeceased by his father Fraser, mother Margaret and sister Sally. He is survived by his children Kyle (Erin) Cuthbert, Greig (Colleen) and grandson Cohan and Karalyn Cuthbert (Clifford Folmes) and their mother Mickey Cuthbert. He also leaves behind his sisters Barb (Doug) Painter of Portage la Prairie, Mary (Kelvin) Code of McCreary and brother Andrew Cuthbert of Brandon as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.
Alec loved the outdoors and was never happier than when he was sharing that with family and friends. We will forever miss him.
A private memorial service will be held.

Doreen Lewadniuk (nee Finlay)
With family by her side Doreen Lewadniuk passed away on Sunday, September 21, 2003 at the Health Sciences Centre, Winnipeg MB at the age 66 years.
Predeceased by her husband Bill, parents Earl and Ione and brother Clifford, Doreen leaves to mourn her passing her three children Blaine (Gabe), Allan and Shirley (friend Neil); grandchildren Billy, Kelly, Carly, Tyson, Aaron and Travis; sisters-in-law Mary Peterson (Ken) and Sonia Lewadniuk; brothers Ramond (Marg), Roy (Pauline), Lloyd (Ideko), David, Fred (Cory) and Ed (Barb); sisters Elle (Frank) Duhame, Ruth Jacobs, Delinor (Jim) Brown along with numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Doreen was born on January 21, 1936 in Portage la Prairie. She was the oldest daughter of 11 children. She grew up on a family farm in the Gainsborough District. Doreen worked at Pragnells bakery where she met her husband Bill. They were married in 1958 and raised their three children on a farm north of Portage. She worked for several years at Stylerite and the Portage Westward Inn. She was a devoted wife and mother and will be missed dearly by all of her family and friends.

Darwin Cleo Schrader
With great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Darwin Cleo Scrader on Saturday, September 20, 2003 at Portage la Prairie at the age of 44 years.
Predeceased by his brother Kenneth, Darwin leaves behind his two sons Curtis and Braden both of Oakville MB, the mother of his sons Jennifer Schrader of Oakville MB, special friend Linda Olfrey of Carman MB, parents Cleo and Yvonne Schrader of Forget Sask., siblings Keith (Linda) of Regina Sask, Craig (Cathy) of Winnipeg MB, Marty of Carstairs AB, Randy (Donna) of Prince Albert Sask., Leslie (Brenda) of Estevan Sask., Liane (Bill) McKenzie of Weyburn Sask, Laurie Mayes of Regina Sask, and Bonnie (Ray) Johner of Balgonie Sask along with many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Darwin was born in Filmore Sask on May 18, 1959. He spent his growing up years in Forget Sask and attended high school in Stoughton Sask. Darwin not only loved hockey but was fairly good at playing the sport in his younger years. For over twenty years, he was employed at the Portage Ford/New Holland Dealership as parts manager.
Darwin found pleasure in being with his family and they appreciated his great sense of humor. Darwin was a very loving and patient father and his main focus and enjoyment in life were his two sons and time spent with them.
Memorial Service will be held in Portage la Prairie on Tuesday, September 23, 2003 at 2:00 pm at St. Mary’s la Prairie Anglican Church with The Rev. Norman Collier officiating. A Memorial Service in Forget Sask will be held at Our Lady of La Salette Church on Friday, September 26, 2003 at 11:00 am with celebrant Father Joachim Tyrtania. Interment is to follow at the family plot in the Forget Cemetery.

MARIA GENDRON

MARIA (PUJO) GENDRON 1908 - 2004 Maria returned her soul to the Lord on Monday April 12, 2004 at the Saint-Boniface hospital at the age of 96. She was predeceased by her husband, Appolinaire in 1981 and by two children, Laurette and Rene. The deceased is survived by her seven children, Clemence Gallet (Jacques), Renee Allen (Peter), Raymond, Lorraine Gatin (Roger), Jeannine Douklias (Alex), Claude (Pauline) and Norm Lambert (Pat). She also leaves behind ten grandchildren, Jacqueline Gallet, Michelle and Paul Gatin, James and Monique Allen, Andre and Dominique Gendron, Nicholas Douklias, and Desiree and Raymond Lambert, as well as ten great-grandchildren, Alexandra, Zoe, Martin, Christian, Charles, Carlton, Cassandra, Isabella, Christian and Eric; a sister, Eleonore Gendron, her sister-in-law, Jeannette Bothorel and Alexis Gendron whom she considered as a little brother. Maria's family offers a big thank you to the nurses and staff of 6E Saint-Boniface hospital for their warm dedication to our dear mother. The funeral mass will be celebrated by Father Paul Campeau in the Cathedral of Saint-Boniface on Thursday April 15 from 2 p.m. The private burial of the ashes will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, those who wish are asked to make a donation in memory of Maria to the Canadian Diabetes Association, 102-310 Broadway Avenue, Winnipeg, MB, R3G 1S6.
