Bertram Hicks
1917-2012
Rev. Bertram Manford Hicks, 95, of Sussex and formerly of Havelock, died Friday, December 28, 2012 at the Sussex Regional Health Centre.
Born in Hicks Settlement, he was a son of the late Harley and Edith (Killam) Hicks. He was born a farmer and remained one at heart, but was called of God as a young man to be a preacher. In 1946 he graduated from the Canadian Nazarene College in Red Deer, Alberta with a Bachelor of Theology degree. He was a pastor with the Reformed Baptist (now Wesleyan) church, serving in Westchester NS, Woodstock, NB, Truro and Londonderry, NS, Havelock NS, Hartland, Lower Brighton and Victoria Corner, NB circuit, and Sandford, NS churches. He also taught and served as college pastor at Bethany Bible College in Yarmouth, NS.
He became pastor of the Woodstock church at a very critical period in its history. Holiness Bible Institute (Bethany Bible College - now known as Kingswood University) had just relocated from Woodstock to Yarmouth, leaving the church with a very small congregation and an expensive church plant to maintain. Mr. Hicks faithfully shepherded this, the Mother Church of the Reformed Baptist denomination, for seven years. When he tendered his resignation in 1955 to join the faculty of Bethany Bible College in Yarmouth, it was said of him that he was "faithfully devoted to the work of the kingdom… (and) people did not want him to leave."
He held a number of denominational offices over the years of his ministry, including president of the Young People's Association, treasurer of the Ministers' Insurance Fund, and denominational Sunday School Purchasing Agent. His ministry found expression in many different forms, but he stated that the most satisfying aspect of his calling was preaching.
At retirement in 1982, he built a home in Havelock, NB near his birthplace, where until two years ago he enjoyed working in the woods, gardening, hunting and spending time with his extended family.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Avis (Flemming); sons Ross and Brian (Fern) of Sussex; daughters Joan of Sussex and Janice Thomas (Reg) of Perth-Andover; grandchildren Sarah, Timothy, Tricia, Emma, Ethan, and Kiera, and great-grandson Connor. Also survived by brothers Leslie (Aleen) of Moncton, and Floyd (Alice) of Ontario, and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents he is predeceased by brothers Lee, Sterling, Gordon and Cecil and sisters Iva, Hilda, and Zora.
Resting at Salisbury Funeral Home, 3350 Salisbury Road (372-4800) visiting will be Monday, December 31 from 1:30 p.m. until the service at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. Reg Thomas officiating assisted by Pastor Jacob Ebbett. Interment at Havelock Wesleyan Cemetery at a later date.
We do not mourn as those who have no hope (1 Thess 4:13), for we know our dear husband and dad is free of pain and in the presence of Jesus, whom he loved dearly, and we shall see him again some day.
If desired, donations to the NB Extra Mural Society or a charity of choice would be appreciated by the family.
