SAMPSON, Joseph - Passed peacefully away on Thursday, September 9, Joseph Sampson, aged 92 years, at Haines Nursing Home, Long Pond, C.B.S. where he was cared for and loved by all. Leaving to mourn 5 daughters: Lillian (Graham) Francis, Elizabeth, Maude, Una and Doreen (Leo) Shute; 4 sons: Joseph Jr. William (Isabell), Walter (Marion) and Reginald; 2 special grandsons: Stephen (Dale) and Shen (Christine); special granddaughter Janet and special friend Marie; also a large number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, relatives and friends; also Elizabeth Kane and Charles Powell (Mary); special niece Margaret (Terry) Corbin and special friend Phyllis Noseworthy. Resting at Barrett`s Funeral Home, 328 Hamilton Ave., Thursday 7-9 p.m., Friday 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Service to be held Saturday, September 11, 1999 at 2 p.m. from Barrett`s Chapel. Interment to follow at the Anglican cemetery , Kenmount Road. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations may be made to the Nfld. Cancer Treatment and Research Foundation.

CHURCHILL, Violet R. - Passed peacefully away at her home in Topsail on Saturday, June 23, 2001, Violet R. Churchill (nee Somerton), in her 88th year. Predeceased by her husband Ches; only son Bert; brother Harold Somerton; sister Mary Morgan. Leaving to mourn: her daughter-in-law Leona; grandson Chesley (Renee); four granddaughters: Arlene O`Brien (Aiden), Dallas Hillier (Elvis), Cynthia (Chris White), Vivian (Deon Whitty); four great-grandchildren: Jennifer, Jill, Jacqueline and Teddy O`Brien; special niece Eleanor Stokes; as well as a large circle of family and friends. Resting a Barrett`s Funeral Home, 328 Hamilton Avenue from 7-10 p.m. on Sunday and from 10 a.m.-10 p.m. on Monday. The Funeral Service will be held at Topsail United Church at a time to be announced later.

Predeceased by her sister Evelyn Snook. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories: brothers, Allan Keefe (Mary) and David Keefe of Tilting, Fogo Island; sisters, Louise Broders of Tilting, Fogo Island and Alice Mayhood of California, U.S.A.; many beloved nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, especially her extended family at the Salvation Army Glenbrook Lodge. Resting at Carnell`s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road on Saturday from 7 p.m.-9 p.m. and Sunday from 2 p.m.-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will take place on Monday, June 25, 2001 at 9:30 a.m. from Mary Queen of Peace Parish, with interment to follow at Holy Sepulchre cemetery . MOONEY, Andrew - Passed peacefully away at the Salvation Army Glenbrook Lodge on Saturday, June 23, 2001, Andrew Mooney, aged 90 years. Former member of the Criminal Investigation Division of the Newfoundland Constabulary and the Mounted Police, retired employee of Golden Eagle. At the time of his death he was the longest serving member of the Knights of Columbus in Newfoundland. Predeceased by his wife Sylvia Turpin Mooney (1967). Leaving to mourn, his only son Gary; daughter-in-law Brenda and two grandchildren Jonathan and Ian, all of Mississauga, Ont.; special niece and nephew Sylvia Healey and Gabe Walsh; also friends at the Glenbrook Lodge. Resting at Carnell`s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road. Visitation will take place on Sunday and Monday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held from St. Pius X Parish on Tuesday, June 26, 2001 at 9:45 a.m. with interment to follow at Holy Sepulchre cemetery . Flowers gratefully accepted or donations in his memory may be made to the Glenbrook Lodge or Jesuit Seminary Association.

Leaving to mourn: son William, son Edward Tobin, sister Rita Yetman, daughter Elizabeth and special family friends Karen Parsons and Sheila Hookey. Resting at Caul`s Funeral Home, LeMarchant Road. Visitation Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Funeral Mass on Monday, June 25th, 2001, at 9:30 a.m. from the Basilica. Interment to follow at Belvedere cemetery . Flowers gratefully accepted.

BRENNAN, Glen P. - Passed peacefully away on June 10, 2001 in Virginia Beach, Virginia, Glen P. Brennan, age 35. Born in San Diego, California, Glen was a U.S. Army Veteran and worked in sales. He was a member of Star of the Sea Catholic Church. Left to mourn, his wife Lisa Hundley Brennan and one son Ian Patrick. Glen was the son of retired U.S.M.C. Col. Ian Brennan, formerly of Scotland and Maureen Brennan of St. John`s, Newfoundland, now living in Pace, Florida. Glen was the grandson of Josephine Brennan Healey of St. John`s. Glen also had a large circle of aunts, uncles & cousins in Scotland and Newfoundland. He was predeceased by his grandparents, Helen & William Brennan of Scotland and William P. Brennan of St. John`s. Funeral Services took place at 1 p.m. on Friday, June 15 at Little Creek Amphibious Base Chapel with Chaplain Michael A. Diaz officiating.

MALONEY, Lucille - Passed peacefully away on June 19, 2001, at St. Vincent`s Guest House, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Born February 16, 1916, in Stoneboro, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Minnie Brocklehurst and William Chisholm. She met her husband Walter Maloney in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and they lived in several areas of the United States and France before retiring to Holyrood, Newfoundland. She will be remembered most for her gentle, friendly personality and complete devotion to her family. She will be sadly missed by her three sons: William (and wife Laura Finlayson), Halifax; James (and wife Susan), Hartsville, South Carolina; and John (and wife Faith), Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; her brother Russell Chisholm (and wife Phyllis), Greenville, Pennsylvania; and her four beloved grandchildren: Kevin, Leanne, Katie and Jaimie Maloney. She was predeceased by her husband Walter and her sister Florence Bortz (Chisholm). A private family service will be held in Halifax, Snow`s Funeral Home officiating, with a Memorial service at a later date in Stoneboro, Pennsylvania. Her loving family and friends will have wonderful memories forever.

Predeceased by infant daughter Dorothy, son Larry, and brother Gerald. Leaving to mourn his devoted wife of 54 years, Dorothy (nee Ward), and his loving family; three sons (Charles (Paula), Danny (Kim), Jim (Francine); two daughters: Sharon Bishop (Randy) and Colleen (Joseph); five grandchildren: Chad and Craig Bishop, Marie and Jennifer Oliver, and Justin Oliver; one sister: Theresa (Bill Walker); four brothers: David, Walter, Raymond and Gordon; sister-in law Agnes Pittman; also a large circle of relatives and friends. Resting at Caul`s Funeral Home, LeMarchant Road. Visitation Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. - 10 p.m. Funeral Mass on Monday, June 25th, 2001, at 9:45 a.m. from St. Pius X Church, Smithville Crescent. Interment to follow at Mount Carmel cemetery . Resting at Carnell`s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road with visiting hours from 7-9 p.m. Friday, September 10th; 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Saturday, September 11th and Sunday, September 12th. Funeral Service to be held on Monday, September 13th, 1999 at 11:00 a.m. from the Carnell Memorial Chapel. RUSSELL, The Honourable Frederick William, O.C., K. St. J., C.D., LL.D., WWII Veteran - Passed peacefully away on Wednesday evening, June 20, 2001 in the presence of his family, Frederick W. Russell in his 78th year. Leaving to mourn his loving wife Peggy, his four children, Doug and his wife Verda, Jan and husband Rick Spracklin, Jim and wife Deanna, Peter and fiancée Melanie Collett. His twelve well-loved grandchildren, Kerri, Ashley and Lexie Russell; Tracy, Dan and Lesley Spracklin; Rebecca, Lara, and Catherine Russell; Fred, Carolyn, and Peter Russell; and darling great-granddaughter Katia Russell Devcic. Also leaving to mourn three brothers, Bert in Oakville, Ont., Bob and wife Molly in Toronto, Ont., and Don and wife Pat in Amherst, NS. Resting at Carnell`s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road on Friday from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Funeral service to take place on Saturday, June 23, 2001 at 2 p.m. from Cochrane Street United Church with interment to follow at the General Protestant cemetery . The family suggests in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the Quidi Vidi Rennie`s River Development Foundation or the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Centre for Cancer Treatment.

RYAN, David Edward - Passed peacefully away at the Stratford General Hospital, Stratford, Ontario on June 9, 2001, in his 57th year after a long courageous battle with cancer. Leaving with loving cherished memories his wife and best friend Margaret (nee Speirs), his son John (wife Catherine) and grandchildren: Megan, Jeffery, Tyler and Ryan, of Brampton, Ontario. His sisters: Mary Lou Stinson (David) and Joan Cobb (Robert); Aunts Eileen Foley and Marie Lacey (George); nine nieces and nephews and their families, who dearly loved their Uncle Dave, all of Newfoundland and a large circle of other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his parents Cyril and Josephine Ryan, his beloved grandmother Lydia Ryan and special Aunt Loretta McNiven. Funeral Mass was celebrated on June 12 followed by interment at Avondale cemetery , Stratford, Ont. Donations in his memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or The Canadian Diabetes Association.

She leaves to mourn with many precious memories, her children: Margaret, Mount Pearl, Patricia (William) Downey, Ontario, Winnie (Tom) McCarthy, Mount Pearl, Anne (Hilary) Rowsell, St. Mary`s, Bernadette (Gerard) Noseworthy, Gander, Doreen (Karl) Merritt, Nova Scotia, Kenneth (Helen), St. Mary`s, Peter (Eileen), St. Mary`s; four sisters: Christina, St. Mary`s, Carmel, Seal Cove, Sister Anna, Presentation Convent, St. John`s, Bernadette (Jack) Duggan, St. John`s; brothers: Gus (Lorraine), Paradise, Stephen, Topsail, 26 devoted grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, son-in-law Robert Kelly, sisters-in-law: Bridget St. Croix, Rita St. Croix, Isabelle St. Croix, Frances St. Croix, and Florrie St. Croix. Also leaving to mourn a large number of nieces and nephews, relatives and friends. Resting at Gibbons` Funeral Home, St. Mary`s, Saturday, June 23, 2 p.m. -9:30 p.m., Sunday, June 24, 12 noon-9:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Church of the Assumption, St. Mary`s on Monday, June 25 at 11 a.m. Burial to follow.
