Roberts, Harry
ROBERTS, Harry Duncan, CM, MD, CM, FRCS(C), LLD(Hon)- Harry Roberts – “Dr. Harry” to his countless patients, friends and associates – died of old age quietly and peacefully on June 5 in St. John's. He was 95, enjoyed a long and productive life of service to others, and leaves cherished memories for all who enjoyed his presence. Above all, Harry Roberts was a physician and surgeon. Skilled, resourceful and ever considerate of the needs of others, he devoted himself to the care and comfort of his patients. He came home in 1937 after completing his formal medical training and quickly established himself as one of the leading practitioners in Newfoundland. He built a large practice, worked hard and served his patients unfailingly. He was proud to be a doctor who would do what needed to be done. And, in those pre-Medicare days, the ability to pay a fee was never an issue with him. Harry Roberts also worked to advance the medical profession in Newfoundland and Canada. He served as Honorary Secretary of the Newfoundland Medical Association from 1939 to 1947 and as its President in 1950. He was actively involved in the affairs of the Canadian Medical Association throughout his career and served as its President in 1971 – the first Newfoundlander to hold that office. Among his professional interest and achievements were leadership roles in the establishment of MD Management and a pioneering insurance program for Newfoundland doctors. Community was an essential part of his life. A life-long member of Gower Street United Church in St. John’s, he chaired its Board of Stewards from 1954 to 1971, served on the United Church School Boards from 1940 to 1968, and was chair of the Board of Prince of Wales College from 1949 to 1962. He supported Memorial University constantly and was an early and ardent supporter of the development of the Faculty of Medicine. Young people were at the heart of his community efforts. Always aware of social inequalities in Newfoundland and the need for expanded opportunities for all, he introduced the Sea Cadet movement to Newfoundland. He became the President of the Navy League of Newfoundland, and later, the Navy League of Canada – again the first Newfoundlander to hold this office. He supported the Guards Athletic Association (President from 1960 to 1962) and in the mid-1950’s led the effort to finance and build the Prince of Wales Arena-the second artificial ice surface in St. John’s. He took great delight in founding and supporting the Gower Youth Band – again with a mind to providing opportunities for young people. Harry Roberts was also a successful businessman and established many enterprises. In business he knew the joys and sorrows of success and failure and carried them with great equanimity. He persisted, overcame adversity and many of his enterprises continue to flourish. He was inducted into the Newfoundland and Labrador Business Hall of Fame in 1994 - the only doctor to hold this honour. His family was at the center of his life-ever present though not always spoken about. He was proud of his Newfoundland roots and never doubted his place. With quiet determination he cared constantly for all his family throughout his life; whatever might be there was always love, comfort, interest, and support. While at Dalhousie medical school in Halifax he met Katharine Moxon from Truro, Nova Scotia. They fell in love, married in 1938 and enjoyed nearly 61 years of family life until her death in 1999. Harry Roberts is remembered by his sons Edward, Douglas and Peter: his daughters-in-law Eve, Germaine, and Betty; grandchildren Catherine Roberts (Ivan Lavrence), Caroline Roberts (Ben Quine), Jessica Webb (Jay Foster), Alison King (Derick), Kerby Kociancic (Mark) and Clair Roberts; great-grandchildren Madeleine Lavrence, Katelyn and James Kociancic; sister Marie Giannou; sister-in-law Alice Roberts; nephew Robert Giannou and niece Avalon Roberts. Harry Roberts knew his mind and expressed himself with hesitation, as any who knew him will attest. As he wished, he has been cremated and his family will scatter his ashes privately. Edward, Douglas and Peter invite all who wish to mark his passing to join them in a celebration of his life to be held in Gower Street United Church in St. John’s on Friday, 11 of June at 2:30 p.m. with a reception to follow in the Church Hall. Flowers are gratefully declined in favour of a donation to the charity of one’s choice.
