Bragg, Rita
BRAGG, Rita (Tilley) — Passed suddenly and peacefully away at her residence on Monday August 23, 2004, Rita Bragg, aged 80 years. Predeceased by her husband Edgar in 1981, four sisters: Daphne Hutchings, Elsie Hollahan, Susie Sheppard and Yvonne Budgell, two brothers: Hall Tilley, Randolph Tilley, brothers-in-law: Donald Griffin, Len Sheppard, Gerald Budgell, sister-in-law: Pearl Tremblett. Leaving to mourn loving son: Boyd (Maisie); grandson: Boyd (Angie); granddaughter: Bonnie; two great-grandchildren: Andrew Bragg and Mackenzie Bragg; sister: Leone Griffin; brothers: Joseph Tilley (Bernice), William Tilley (Ena), Robert Tilley (Patricia); brothers-in-law: William Hutchings and Ronald Hollahan; sisters-in-law: Shirley Bragg and Edith Bragg; also a large number of other relatives and friends. Resting at Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road from 7-9 pm on Tuesday, 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm on Wednesday, 10-12 noon on Thursday. Funeral service from the Anglican Cathedral on Thursday, August 26, 2004 at 2 pm. Interment to follow at the Anglican cemetery on Kenmount Rd. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Pearce, Louisa
PEARCE, Louisa Maeve — Passed peacefully away at home on Thursday, August 12, 2004, Louisa Maeve Pearce, age 85 years, formerly of Edinburgh, Scotland. Predeceased by husband Daniel, daughter Christine, four sisters and three brothers. Leaving to mourn three daughters: Heather Dove (Ted), Pamela Coady (Kevin) and Karen Pearce; son Bernard Reilly; seven grandchildren: Lisa, Michael and Christine Dove, Kevin and Christopher Coady, Philip and Kenneth Goodland; nine great-grandchildren; sister Maureen in Edinburgh; son-in-law Noel Goodland; also other relatives and friends in Scotland and St. John's. Resting at Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Rd. from 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Funeral service from the Carnell Memorial Chapel on Monday, August 16, 2004 at 11 a.m. Interment to follow in the Anglican cemetery, Kenmount Rd. In lieu of flowers, donations in Louisa's memory may be made to Iris Kirby House or Canadian Mental Health Association.

Winter, Dorothy
WINTER, Dorothy Kathryn (nee Martyn) — Passed peacefully away on 27 June, 2004, Dorothy Kathryn Winter (nee Martyn). She was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan on August 25, 1921. She was the daughter of the late Oscar and Irene Martyn. After graduating from high school in Regina, she traveled to Newfoundland to visit her late uncle's family in 1942. While there she joined the Women's Division of the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1943. In December of 1943, while in training as a signals officer in Winnipeg, she and her husband Norman were married . They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this past December. In retirement, she and her husband traveled extensively for fifteen years, spending their winters in Arizona and their summers in Ontario. She will be remembered by many of her friends in campgrounds across the continent. She and Norm moved to Halifax in 2001. She is survived by her loving husband Norman, son's Jim (Alanna), Doug (Bonnie), Ken (Denyse) and Ian, a sister Marylou of Richmond, BC and seven grandchildren. Cremation has taken place. No flowers by request. Donations may be made to either The Girl Guides of Canada, The Canadian Red Cross or The Canadian Cancer Society. Memorial Service will take place at Carnell Memorial Chapel, 329 Freshwater Road, on August 24, 2004 at 11:00 a.m., followed by a reception. Condolences may be sent by email to dkwinter@ns.sympatico.ca or mailed c/o 304-1419 Bay Rd., Lakeside, NS, B3T 1K4.

Strickland, Douglas
STRICKLAND, Douglas — Passed peacefully away at the Health Sciences Complex on August 17, 2004, Douglas Strickland, age 68 years. Predeceased by his parents Mary (Kearsey) Strickland and Benjamin Strickland. Leaving to mourn stepmother Mary Thistle (Strickland); brothers Gerald, Bill (Muriel), Ted (Charlene), Carbonear; Ben and Patrick; sisters: Delores Cook (Dick), Ontario; Lorraine Smith (Rick), Ontario; sisters: Linda Bartlett (Jim), Liz Anderson (Tom), Rhonda Stenhouse (Sheriff), Pennsylvania; nieces, nephews, and a large circle of other relatives and friends. At Douglas' request, cremation has taken place. This was followed by a private funeral service. Donations in his memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. Funeral arrangements entrusted to the care of Carnell's Funeral Home.

Keough, Gertrude
KEOUGH, Gertrude (nee O'Brien) (First Provincial Human Rights Commissioner) The family of Gertrude Keough sadly advise of her passing on August 23, 2004. Predeceased by her husband, Hon. W.J. (Bill) Keough. Leaving with loving memories her children: Kevin (Joni), Erin, Sharon (Richard) Boczkowski, Shelly (Toby) McDonald, and Willeen (Michael Owler); grandchildren: Shanna (Dave) Lindsay, Valerie Keough, Sasha and Nick Boczkowski, Sarah and Mark McDonald; great-grandchildren: Tim and Molly Lindsay; sisters: Lucy (Joe) Glazebrook, Sister Marie, Joan (Howard) Dyer, Barbara, Maggie, and Anna; sisters-in-law: Bernice (Leo) Keough, Irene (Paul) Penney, Sheila Keough, Eleanor (John) King, and brother-in-law: John (Evelyn) Hennessey; and a wide circle of family and friends. Predeceased by her sisters: Sister Redempta, Madeline (Bernie) Stoyles, and Ethel (Bob) Boland, and her brothers: Frank (Marg) and Cecil (Kitty). Resting at Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road. Visitation Wednesday and Thursday, 2-4 and 7-10 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Pius X Church on Friday at 9:45 a.m. Interment will follow at Holy Sepulchre cemetery. Flowers gratefully accepted, or donations in her memory may be made to St. Patrick's Mercy Home Foundation, the Girl Guides of Canada (Newfoundland Branch), or a charity of your choice.

Picco, Dorothy
PICCO, Dorothy (nee Foote) — Passed peacefully away on Wednesday, August 18, 2004 at her residence, Dorothy Picco, aged 64 years. Predeceased by her sisters: Mary Pittman and Alice Edwards and brother Wesley Foote. Left with fond and loving memories her loving husband Gordon; precious daughter Darlene (Dean) Foote; sisters: Vera Piccott and Emily (Harry) Camp; brothers: Ken (Gertie) and Peter Foote; sisters and brothers-in-law; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. Special niece Linda Cumben and sister-in-law Rose (Dennis) King. Resting at Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. and Friday from 10-12, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service to take place on Saturday, August 21, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. from St. Philip's Anglican Church with interment to follow in St. Philip's Anglican cemetery. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations may be made in her memory to the Heart & Stroke Foundation.

Hustins, Kate Corkery- passed away suddenly in Toronto on July 30th, Kate Hustins age 30 years. Leaving to mourn devoted and loving parents, Donald and Kathyrn; sister, Nancy-Louise; partner Aimee Finlay; left with fond and loving memories three aunts: Shirley Sutton (Albert), Louise Hustins and Martha Barry (Pat); one uncle Edward Corkery (Michelle); eight cousins: Stephen, Jim, Jeremy, Allison, Andrew, Beth, Ryan, Chris and Jessie; Resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Rd. from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday August 2, 2004. Cremation to follow. A Memorial Service will be held at the Carnell Memorial Chapel on Tuesday August 3, 2004 at 11 a.m. No flowers by request. Donations in Kate’s memory may be made to the SPCA of Newfoundland and Toronto. “May God grant Kate everlasting peace. And give the family the strength of good Memories to go on.”

Cook, Walter
COOK, Walter — Passed peacefully away at St. Clare's on Sunday, August 8, 2004, Walter Cook, age 86 years. Walter was born on the Golden Ridge Farm, Portugal Cove Road, and was a farmer there for 45 years. He was the youngest of eight children of John and Sarah Cook and the last surviving member of his family. He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Hazel Harvey Cook and his oldest son, Donald. Leaving to mourn are his devoted children: Sylvia Jean, Bedford, NS and Ross (wife Nancy); his grandchildren: Donald, Rodney, Curtis Cook and Meredith and Alyse Cook Hand; and great-grandchildren: Kaylea and Chelsea Cook. As well, he will be missed by his great companion, Hazel Stanley. Resting at Carnell's Funeral Home. Visitation Tuesday 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Service 2:00 p.m. Wednesday from U.C. Church, Portugal Cove. Donations in his memory may be made to NL Lung Association or St. James or Portugal Cove United Church.

Rose, William
ROSE, William Joseph Francis — Passed peacefully away at Caribou Memorial Veterans Pavilion on Thursday, August 12, 2004, Bill Rose, aged 88 years, retired from Newfoundland Liquor Corporation in 1981. A Veteran of WWII with the Forestry Division. Predeceased by his wife, Lily (1992), grandson, Kevin (1982) and his stepbrother, Jack Devereaux. Leaving to mourn daughters Pauline (Sam Kelly), Beverley; grandchildren Paul & Mark Kelly and Maggie & Katie Hyslop; stepsisters Helen (Don Connors), Betty (Ed Evoy), Bride Kavanagh, Norah (Tom Tobin); stepbrother Paddy (Winnifred Devereaux) and a wide circle of family and friends. Resting at Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road. Visitation from 2-4 & 7-9 Friday, 10-12, 2-4, 7-9 Saturday; and 2-4, 7-9 Sunday. Funeral Mass to take place from the Basilica of St. John the Baptist on Monday, August 16, 2004. Time to be announced. Interment to follow in Anglican cemetery, Kenmount Road. Cuff, Guy
CUFF, Guy — passed away suddenly on August 4, 2004, Guy Cuff, age 45 of St. John's. Predeceased by his parents, Dawson and Edith Cuff of Carmenville. Leaving to mourn wife Cynthia (nee Dunphy); sister Zelda Pynn (John); nephew Dawson Pynn; nieces: Valerie Rose (Darryl), Alexis and Portia; as well as other relatives and friends. Resting at Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 12 noon Saturday. Funeral service to take place on Saturday, August 7, 2004 at 2 p.m. from the Carnell Memorial Chapel. Cremation to follow. His warm, kind and quiet personality endeared him to many people throughout his life. He will be eternally loved and missed.

Levitz-Mauskopf, Ida
Levitz-Mauskopf, Mrs. Ida - passed away unexpectedly but very peacefully at the Health Sciences Centre, St. John’s on Saturday, July 31, 2004, aged 79 years. Daughter of the late Charles and Katie Levitz (nee Swersky) of St. John’s. Beloved wife of Ernie and Mother of Randy. Sister of Lorraine Schaefer (New Haven, Connecticut) and of the late Ruth Cohen (Bell Island). Sisters-in-law: Edie Cohen, Anuska Mauskopf, Mary Milner, the late Ida Rosenberg, the late Iby Wiezner. Brothers in law: Robert Cohen, the late Hugo Mauskopf, the late Eugene Milner, Edwin Schaefer. Nieces and Grand Nieces: Carol Cohen-Trevick, Ruth Cohen, Lisa Milner, Leslye Schaefer, Kitty Wieser. Nephews and Grand-Nephews: Larry, Charlie and Ivan Cohen, Tommy Mauskopf, Nicholas Milner, Allan Schaefer, Jacob & Steven Trevick, and the late Peter Wiezner. Loved ones: Dianne Cohen, Faye and Ike David, Sabrina, Dan, Gabriel & Margot Mathews; Jane & Jack McGrath, Robin McGrath, Dave & June Mercer, Jeanne Perlin. Cousins: Aaron, Bernard, Bernice, Gerry, Inez, Jamie, Jeff, Leonard, Lil, Mark, Peter & Shelley Levitz; Annie Kimball; Ida, Barbara, Steven, Barry and the late Mac Rosen; Brenda Levitz-Breeding; the late Ella Levitz & the late Abe Levitz; Renee & the late Sid Freed. Aunts (predeceased): Bella, Ida, Mary and Rozie Levitz. Uncles (predeceased): Bernard, Isaac, Ernest and Sam Levitz. This is the weekend of the Levitz Family Reunion in Connecticut, and their fond and loving memories carry us through this difficult time. With deepest thanks to the caring staff at the Health Sciences Centre and East End Medical Centre. Ida was active in the arts for 22 years. She and Ernie operated The Gallery on Duckworth Street. Funeral service took place, Sunday, August 1, 2004 at 4:00 p.m. beginning at Beth-El Synagogue, 128 Elizabeth Avenue (corner of Downing), St. John’s. No flowers by request.
