Moores, Frank D.
MOORES, The Honourable Frank D. — Newfoundland and Labrador's second premier passed away on July 10th, 2005 at hospital in Perth, Ontario, at the age of 72, after a battle with cancer that never conquered his spirit or zest for life. Premier from 1972 to 1979, Frank was devoted to the province and its people. He was the loving and beloved husband of Beth, brother of Megan Nutbeem, father of Susan, Deborah, Michele, Jill, Nicole, Stuart, Andrea and Stefan, father-in-law to Andy, Chris, Al, Lisa and David, grandfather of Becky, Josh, Sarah, Rachel, Zoe, Jay, Nick, Sasha, Hilary, Kyle, Evan, Laura, Cam, Cole, Hunter, Riley and Gabrielle, and great-grandfather to Sophie. Born in Carbonear, Newfoundland, Frank graduated from St. Andrew's College in Aurora, Ontario, where for two years he was Commanding Officer of the Cadets. Active in the family fish business and community affairs in Harbour Grace during the 1960s, Frank helped found the Cee-Bees hockey team, for which he was recently inducted into the Newfoundland Hockey Hall of Fame. In 1968, Frank was elected M.P. for Bonavista-Trinity-Conception, and in 1969, president of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada. In 1972, he was elected Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, where he worked tirelessly to develop the economy of the province, democratize its politics, and preserve its culture of fierce pride and compassion, which he embodied in his own personality. In the 1980s, Frank was active on the federal political scene, founding a government relations firm in Ottawa and then, in the early 1990s, began spending more and more of his time with his family at his cherished home in Chaffey's Lock, Ontario. Avid fisherman, crack shot, and lover of the outdoors, Frank was never happier than when he was on a river, in the woods, or on the barrens. A wonderful raconteur with an endless trove of stories, acute observations, and lore of Newfoundland and Labrador, Frank lived, as one of his friends once said, 'at a time which was probably the best he could have chosen for himself.' To everyone who knew him, on either side of the political aisle and whatever their walk in life, he was a gentleman who will always be remembered for his vibrant warmth, wit and humanity. As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations made to the Frank Moores Scholarship at St. Andrew's College or to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family.
