LUCIS, Arnis: Formerly of Cesis, Latvia. passed away on September 03, 2008, age 87 years. Predeceased by his sisters, Velta and Mara. Leaving to mourn his wife of 58 years, Sofija; special family members: Martin, Ruta (Juris), Kristine, Peter (Carolyn); special grandchildren: Jason, Traci, Hayley and Chelsea, and close family friends: Ingrid Pardoe and Brenda Burness. Special thanks to Dr. Michael Kennedy and Mrs. Elizabeth Kennedy, the staff at the Health Sciences, South 4A and B and also to the management and wonderful staff of Elizabeth Towers for their care and concern. At Arnis’s request, cremation has taken place. A memorial service in his memory will be held on Thursday, September 18, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. from the Carnell Memorial Chapel, 329 Freshwater Road. A reception will follow at the home of Kristine Penney. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer’s Society or Newfoundland and Labrador would be appreciated.

BURKE, Dorothy Joan (nee Boland): Passed peacefully away at St. Patrick’s Mercy Home on Monday, September 08, 2008 in the presence of her loving family, Dorothy Burke, aged 80 years. Predeceased by her parents Helena (Kavanagh) Boland and James Boland; her husband, Leo in 1972; sisters: Magdalen and Agnes; brothers: Albert, Rupert and Kevin. Leaving to mourn her children: John, Linda, Eddy, Tony, Brenda (Ben Sears), Theresa (Ron Kelland), Carl, Kevin, Sandra (Doug Dymond) and Alice; seven grandchildren: Linda, Tracey, Ronnie, Andrew, Melissa; her special grandson Frank and special granddaughter Dione; seven great-grandchildren: Sherice, Skyler, Gereina, Gemma, Shawn, Elizabeth and Brayden; sisters: Elizabeth Croft (Rupert, deceased) of Aquaforte, Eileen Angel (John) of Ontario; brothers: Harold (Nora, deceased) of Calvert and Cecil of Kelligrews; also a large number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road with visitation on Wednesday and Thursday from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Cremation to follow. Miller, Dr. James
MILLER, Dr. James A. – Passed peacefully away in the presence of his loving family at the Leonard A. Miller Centre on Wednesday, September 10, 2008, at the age of 71. Predeceased by his parents Leonard J. and Mary M. of Placentia, and son-in-law Christopher Sullivan. Jim acquired his Doctorate in Dental Surgery (Dalhousie University) and specialty training in Oral Surgery (University of Pennsylvania). He earned his Fellowship with the Royal College of Dentists of Canada in Oral Surgery and was most proud of later becoming a Diplomate with the International Congress of Oral Implantologists at the age of 63. He was both the first dentist of Placentia and, later, oral and maxillofacial surgeon of Newfoundland and Labrador. He often struggled on behalf of patients and, during a forty six year career, raised many critical issues with health policy makers, and frequently gave his service and experience pro bono publico. Leaving to celebrate his active life, his cherished wife of thirty nine years, Carol A. (nee Diamond); his daughter Melissa Sullivan and his son Robert (Angela Harvey). Leaving to mourn his sisters Bernice Swallow (John) of Vernon, British Columbia and Sheila Flynn (Patrick) of Placentia. He will be dearly remembered by his beloved Aunts Bernadine Murphy of Placentia and Rose (Dr. Bill Stucker) of Indiana, and never to be forgotten by his sisters-in-law Heather Richardson (Charles) of Phoenix, Arizona and Marina Wight of Victoria, British Columbia; and his brother-in-law Winston Diamond. Sadly missed by his canine buddies, Darwin and Tuxedo. Heartfelt thanks to Fr. John Courage, Dr. P. Skirving, Dr. W. Eaton and Dr. S. Rorke; the kind nursing staffs of the Dr. Leonard A. Wadland, Daniel Albert - Passed suddenly away on Friday, September 12, 2008, at his trailer while camping, Albert Wadland, aged 74 years. Predeceased by his sisters, Mary, Marj, May, Marg and Doris; Brother Tom and recently predeceased by bother-in-law, Graham French and sister-in-law Shirley Gulliver. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories are his wife, Catherine (Kay O’Brien); six children, Dan (Rosalie), Carly (Randy), Alice (Melvin), Randy (Jackie), Paul (Shirley) and May (Wayne), grandchildren, Kayla, Jennifer, Justin, Shane, Lynn Marie, Randy, Justin, Andrew, Katie, Krysta and Jonathon; great grandchild, Daniel; brothers, John (Sheila), George (Beatrice), Dave (Jennifer) and Arch; brothers-in-law, Ellis Cole, Alvin Oliver, Don Bugden and Bob Burton and sister-in-law, Terry Wadland, special friends Byron Mercer and Wayne Murphy, as well as a large number of other family and friends. Daughter of the late John and Mina Hartt of Toronto, Ontario. Predeceased by beloved husband Rev. Cecil Fifield, cherished mother of Carol (Ken Ryan), Beverley (Charlie Gearin) and David and adoring grandmother of Mollie Elizabeth Gearin. Also leaving to mourn sisters-in-law Amy (late William) Coles, Louise (late Calvin) Humber, Mae Glen and Jesse (William) Abraham, Janet (late Gerald) Fifield; brothers-in-law Harold (late Myrtle) Fifield, Walter (late Edith) Fifield, Mark (late Irene and Lois) Fifield; special friend Joanne and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Predeceased by her beloved husband Harold (August 1990), daughter Sheena (October 1947), infant son (May 1948), grandson Brian Dewling (November 1988) and grandson Andrew Sullivan (September 2006).
