Newell, Ruby Bernice

NEWELL, Ruby Bernice : It is with great sadness the family of Ruby Newell announce her passing on October 7, 2010, at St. Clare's Mercy Hospital, aged 79 years. She is predeceased by her husband Alton; parents, Sadie and George Roberts; brother, Ernie and brother-in-law Lou Poirier. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories 14 children: Judy (John Gentry), Joe (Helen Woodford), Lily (Ken Penton), Philip (Marie), Donald (Marilyn), Daphne (Patrick Boland), Alton Jr. (Mary), Gloria (Jerry Harris), Linda (Dave Joy), June (John Baker), Roger (Jeanette), Robert (Krista Aucoin), Mary (Michael Baker) and Ruby (Wayne Baker); 30 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; brothers: Don (Cynthia), Victor, Harold (Ida) Roberts; sisters: Jean (Ed), Shirley and Cynthia (Gerald). Ruby’s 14 children will miss her warm smile and guidance. Ruby will be missed by a family friend, Judy Hogan and her best friend Tony Jones. Special thanks to Lillian Squires for her loving care and to Dr. Azher and the nurses on 4 West. Resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Funeral service to take place on Monday, October 11, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. from the Carnell Memorial Chapel with interment to follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations in Ruby’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society.

Thompson, Wallace E.

THOMPSON, Wallace Eric: Oldest retired member of the RNC. Passed peacefully away on October 4, 2010, Wallace Thompson, Aged 92 years. Predeceased by his son: Eric and granddaughter, Tara. Left with fond and loving memories his wife of 66 years, Barbara (nee French); son, Lorne (Beverley); daughters: Sherrill (Ralph Pitcher), Karen (Len Hillier), Beverly (Keith Noseworthy); grandchildren: Michelle (Jamie Chippett), Marcel Pitcher (Paula), Angela Griffin (Cliff), Robert Thompson, Chris Hillier (Natalie), Coralee Hillier (Jonnie), Tracy Noseworthy (Andrew); great-grandchildren: Ehvan and Haeden Griffin; sister, Daisy Skeard (Garland); special niece, Marilyn Thompson as well as a large circle of family and friends. Resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road on Tuesday and Wednesday from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Funeral service to take place from the Salvation Army Citadel, Adam’s Avenue on Thursday, October 7, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. with interment to follow in the Salvation Army Cemetery, Blackmarsh Road. In lieu of flowers, donations in Wallace’s memory may be made to the Janeway Children's Hospital Foundation.

Kent, Mary G.
1915-2010

As she always lived, Mary passed peacefully away with grace and dignity. Left with many wonderful memories of a life well and truly lived are her daughters: Anne (Stan Martin), Robyn (Gerard Healey) and Susan (Tom Foran) and her son Robert (Janet Adey). "Nan" was deeply loved and admired by her ten grandchildren: Stephen, Leslie and Andrew Martin, Robbie, Douglas and Andrea Healey, Tommy and Kent Foran, Bobby and Heather Kent. "GG" was thrilled to have welcomed her five great-grandchildren into the family: Nathan Osbourne, Rebecca Healey, Thomas and James Foran and Ryan Martin. Mary will be sorely missed by her beloved brother, John J. Murphy, CM (Sheilagh Guy). "Auntie Mary" was a very special person to her six nieces: Edwina Kirkland, Pam Arway, Maureen Fitzgerald, Karen Murphy, Trish Green, Jane Phillips and nephew Paul Murphy. Mary will be missed by her many friends, both old and new, but especially her lifelong friend Kitty Power. Mary was predeceased by her husband Bob Kent, her sister Margaret and brother-in-law Charlie Fitzgerald and her sister-in-law Marjorie Murphy. Mary's family express their sincere thanks to the staff of 4NA Health Sciences and 1N St. Patrick's Mercy Home, for their care and compassion. At Mary's request, cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at Carnell's Funeral Home, October 23 and 24. Mass of Christian Burial from St. Pius X Church, October 25th.

TULK HELEN

Passed peacefully away at St. Clares hosiptal, after a brief illness, on October 3, 2010, Helen Tulk (nee Foote) in her 88th year. Formerly from Carbonear, she lived her last five years at Cambridge Estates where she was cared for by the wonderful staff. Predeceased by her beloved husband, Ronald G. Tulk, sister Lina Hynes, brother William R. Foote and sister Mary Bailey. Helen leaves behind her son, Douglas Tulk ( Gerri), daughter Beverly Mcgrath (Buddy), and son Samuel Tulk (Valerie). Also leaving her grandchildren, Tony (Jan), and Michelle Mcgrath, Jason Tulk( Melissa) and Amanda Tulk-O’Reilly (Kristopher) and three great grandchildren. She also leaves special neices Linda Hynes and Janet Malone, special cousin Gloria Harding and other relatives and friends. Resting at Carnell’s Funeral home, 329 Freshwater Rd on Monday October 4th, 2010 1-9 p.m. Funeral to be held from the Carnell Memorial Chapel on Tuesday October 5th, 2010 at 11:00am with internment to follow at the Anglican Cemetery on Kenmount Rd. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations in Helen’s memory may be made to St. Michael and All Angels Anglican Parish building fund, or to a charity of ones choice.

Whalen, Dianne Carolynn

WHALEN, Dianne Carolynn: Passed peacefully away on October 3, 2010 Dianne Carolynn Whalen after a courageous battle with cancer. She is predeceased by her husband Joseph Whalen; mother and father Tobias and Melida Hayley. Leaving to mourn sons: Dean (June) and Darryl (Maria); daughter, Kimberley Ann (Paul); brother, Ronald (Sally); sisters: Pauline (Kirk), Valerie (Robin), Wanda and Violet; grandchildren: Dakota Brake, Devaughn Allen, Jenna and Mitchell Haynes; great-grandchild, Austin Brake; special sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Doris and Robert Hussey and dear friends: Kathy Dunderdale, Barbara Wakeham and Jim Gladney who have walked every step of the way with her during her illness. Ever remembered by many nieces, nephews and a large circle of friends. Sincere thanks to the Premier and to all her colleagues in the House of Assembly; the staff at the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre; Dr. Leslie Rourke, Dr. Nigel Duguid and Dr. Wayne Button for their care, friendship and guidance during her illness, the family will be forever grateful. Also a heartfelt thank you to all the community health nurses and staff who cared for her during her illness. Resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 1045 Topsail Road, Mount Pearlwith visitation on Tuesday, October 5 and Wednesday, October 6 from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Funeral Mass to take place on Thursday, October 7, 2010 at 9:30 a.m. from the Basilica of St. John the Baptist with interment to follow at the Roman Catholic Cemetery, Topsail. We are saddened to announce that a very special dad, gramps and husband is making his final journey to be with the love of his life, Madge. Leaving to mourn with wonderful memories daughters Shona (Wade) and Moira (Keith), sons Danny (Paula); Frank (Suzzanne). Grandchildren Brandon, Nadine, Travis and Sarah. Predeceased by wife Madge and great grandchild Sila. Also leaving a large circle of family and friends. WALLACE, Margaret: Passed peacefully away in the presence of her loving family at St. Clare’s MercyHospital on Friday, October 1, 2010, Margaret Wallace, aged 71 years. Predeceased by her mother and father, Frances and Eli Lewis; brother, Bill and his wife Ruth; sister, Florence (Toss); father-in-law and mother-in-law, William and Mildred Wallace. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories her loving husband of 50 years, Doug; son, Perry; daughter, Donna; sisters: Mary (Bill-deceased), Judy (Don) Abbott, Maureen (Harold) Pearce; Lorna (Clayton) Squires; brother, Ralph (Marion) Lewis; sisters-in-law: Olive (Ed) Bush, Sandra (Cec) Piercey and Marilyn(Ralph) Taylor; brothers-in-law: Bill (Linda) Wallace, Les (Jean) Wallace, Tom (Wynone) Wallace and Max (Mary) Wallace and Billy Austin; two darling grandchildren, Nikole and Collin whom she adored. Also leaving a large circle of family and friends. Butler, Bruce James

Passed away at home, surrounded by his loving family and constant canine companion, Gucci, after a lengthy illness on September 27, 2010. Predeceased by his parents, Eric J. and Winnifred (Davis) Butler; father-in-law, Dr. Raymond Bugden. He leaves to mourn his wife and best friend of 39 years, Beth; "favourite daughter" Jane; son, Adam (Andrea) and precious granddaughter Averie Elizabeth; sisters: Betty (Doug Crawshaw) of Moncton, Jean (Doug Manstan), Joan (Sam Tiller) and brother, John (Sherry); brothers-in-law Michael (Judy) Bugden and Peter Bugden; mother-in-law, Marigold Bugden; as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends, especially Clem and Linda Hayward for their unconditional love and support. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road on Tuesday and Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A service of celebration will take place from the Carnell Memorial Chapel on Thursday, September 30, 2010 at 2 p.m. Inurnment to follow at the Anglican Cemetery, Forest Road. Donations in Bruce's memory may be made to The Bruce J. Butler Memorial Fund in care of the Director of Alumni Affairs, Memorial University, St. John's, NL A1C 5S7.

Squires, Alice (nee Tucker) - Passed peacefully away at the Palliative Care Unit of the Miller Centre September 26th, 2010. Alice Squires, age 87 years. Predeceased by her husband, Arthur; son, Eric; sisters, Mabel Flemming and Emma Penney; parents, Christina and Gordon Tucker; and son-in-law, Stan Richards. Left with fond and loving memories son, Arthur; daughters, Florence Morgan (Don), Dorothy Clarke (Lewis) and Winnie Richards; granddaughter, Angela Clarke-Ivany (Todd); great granddaughter, Brianna; brother, Gordon Tucker; sisters, Margaret Mercer and Elizabeth King; special friends, Bernice Butler and Maureen Tucker; along with many other relatives and friends. Resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, with visitation Monday and Tuesday from 2-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held from St. Philip’s Anglican Church on Wednesday September 29th, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. Interment to follow in St. Philip’s Anglican Cemetery. Flowers gratefully accepted, or donations in Alice’s memory may be made to the St. Philip’s Anglican New Church Building Fund.
