Corbett, Davalynn "Dee"

Corbett, Davalynn "Dee" (Pendergast) – Passed peacefully away on Saturday, August 27, 2011 at the Health Science Centre, at the age of 56 years. Predeceased by her husband, Brian Corbett and her parents, Harvey and Genevieve Pendergast. Leaving to mourn are her two daughters, Andrea (Jeff) of St. John’s and Giselle of Labrador City; brothers and sisters, Craig (Linda) Pendergast, St. John’s, John ( Michelle) Pendergast, Mount Pearl, Wenda Temple (Wilson), St. John’s, and Rosie Gardiner (Wayne), Mount Pearl; her brothers-in-law, Patrick (Ruth) Corbett, Gerry (Patricia) Corbett, Robert (Mary) Corbett, Kevin (Daphne) Corbett and Paul (Marie) Corbett; her sisters-in-law, Catherine Stanley (Winston); Bernice Duff (Brian); Sheila Crocker (Winston) and Janet Bursey, as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road on Sunday, August 28th from 2:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. and 7:00-9:00 p.m. and Monday, August 29th from 10:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will take place at Corpus Christi Church on Tuesday August 30, 2011 at 9:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Mt. Carmel Cemetery on Wednesday August 31, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations in her memory can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society to be used for ovarian cancer research.

Power, Vincent

Passed away peacefully at his residence surrounded by his loving family, Vincent L. Power aged 81 years formerly of Ferryland. Predeceased by his wife of 59 years Josephine Yetman, parents Michael and Eta Clowe along with daughter- in-law Rhonda. Leaving with cherished memories five sons: Michael (Judy), Kevin, Johnny, Vince (Brenda), Barry (Donna); three daughters: Marilyn (Cyril) Sears, Madeline (Derrick) Squires, Nellie (Joey) Morrissey; ten grandchildren whom he adored, also leaving with precious memories eight great-grandchildren; two brothers: Eddie (Anna) and Joe; two sisters: Caroline and Rita (Fred) Sheehan. A large circle of family and friends as well as his special furry friend, Pumpkin. Also a special thanks to the staff of 4 North A at the Health Science Center for their kindness and compassion shown to Dad. Resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Rd on Sunday, August 28, 2011 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. and Monday, August 29, 2011 from 10 a.m. - 9 p.m. with a celebration of his life on Tuesday, August 30, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. from St. Teresa’s Parish with interment to follow on Wednesday, August 31, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Sepchulre. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations in Vincent’s memory may be made to the Palliative Care Unit.

Fudge, Vivian Linda

Fudge, L. Vivian (1950 -- 2011): Passed peacefully away at the Health Science Centre, after a short illness, on September 20, 2011, Vivian Fudge, age 60 years. Predeceased by her husband Wilson Fudge; parents Nelson and Dulcy Henstridge and sister-in-law Patricia Ryan. Leaving to mourn sons Dion (Natasha), Christopher (Nicole) and Peter (Terri-Lynn); grandchildren Natalie, Ryan and Coen; brothers Lorne (Bernice), Woodrow (Violet) and Lawrence (Sharon); sisters Patsy (Hayward) Fudge and Lovejoy (Joe) Winsor; mother-in-law Audrey; brothers-in-law Lloyd Ryan, Lindy (Valerie)and Roger (Jeanette); sisters-in-law Judy Fudge, Karen (Kevin) Anthony, Joann (Art) Ryan, Jane (Wayne) Fudge, Heather (Tony) Fudge and Paula (Randy) Fudge. Also leaving to mourn a large number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was greatly loved and cherished and will be deeply missed. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at the HSC, 5NorthA for their help, compassion and support. Resting at the Salvation Army Church in Triton on Friday, September 23, with visitation from 3:00-8:00 p.m. Funeral service to take place at the Salvation Army Church in Triton on Saturday, September 24, 2011 at 2:00 p.m.. Interment to follow at the Salvation Army Cemetery in Brighton. Donations in Vivian's memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada.

Knight, Lewis George

Passed peacefully away on September 19, 2011, at the Health Sciences Centre, Lewis George Knight, age 69 years. Born in Moreton’s Harbour, New World Island. Retired Seaman, Marine Atlantic. Predeceased by his parents Dawe and Grace (Taylor) Knight. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories his wife Bernadine; sons: Lewis Michael (Cherise) and Keith (Natasha); daughters: Yvonne, Susan (special friend Forrest) and Christa (special friend James) and “Papa Lou’s” special grandchildren: Abigail, Connor and Cameron; brother Paul and his family Billy, Debbie and Paula; brothers-in-law: Greg Abbott (Geraldine), Joe Abbott (Shirley), John Abbott (Cindy); sisters-in-law: Mary Murphy (Bob), Geraldine Hunt (Bob), Theresa Cullen (Wayne), Margaret Manning (Joe) and families; many special cousins, relatives and friends. Special thanks to the nursing staff and doctors of the Waterford Hospital, Dialysis Unit. Resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road with visitation on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. and on Wednesday from 10 a.m. - 12 noon. Funeral service to be held on Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at 2 p.m. from the Carnell Memorial Chapel with cremation to follow. A memorial service will be held at Moreton’s Harbour United Church on Friday, September 23, 2011 at 2 p.m. with interment to follow at the United Church Cemetery, Moreton’s Harbour. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Health Care Foundation (Dialysis Unit).

Simms, Dr. Robert John Fox M.D., F.R.C.P (Canada), K.S.G

Simms, Dr. Robert John Fox M.D., F.R.C.P (Canada), K.S.G (1912-2011) Passed peacefully away on September 19, 2011 Robert (Bob) Simms. Predeceased by his wife, Joan (Howlett); sister: Elizabeth (Betty) McClure; parents Ethel (Fox) and Robert Simms, and nephew Dr. Philip Simms. Ever remembered and loved by his daughter, Brenda (John); grandchildren: Katie and Vickie Flood; brother, Dr. Douglas Simms. Also leaving to mourn nieces and nephews: Judy DeGrace, Dr. Gregory Simms, Dr. Richard Simms, Dr. Douglas Simms Jr., Colin Simms, Andrea Adams, Joan Ronsyn, David McClure, Barbara Stanton, Carol Woltman, and Tina Belanger. Robert (Bob) Simms was born in St. John’s in 1912. He studied pre-medicine at Memorial College and studied Medicine at Guy’s Hospital Medical School, London, and Harvard University. He practiced Medicine for most of his life at two locations on Queen’s Rd in offices that he shared with his brother, Dr. Douglas Simms. He was chief of Medicine at both St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital and St. John’s General Hospital. He was President of the Newfoundland Medical Association, President of the Newfoundland Medical Board and received the Queen’s Medal in 1977. The honor of Knight of St. Gregory was bestowed on him by Pope Paul VI in 1978. For those of you who knew Bob well, you may remember him for his love of family, friends and nature. He spent many happy hours fishing with his brother, Douglas, at Secret Gullies. The family wishes to thank Monsignor James Doody and Father Wayne Dohey for their spiritual guidance, Dr. Michael Furlong, Dr. Peter Seviour, Dr. Percy Crocker, staffs of St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital, Chancellor Park and T.L.C. Nursing and Homecare Services for tending to his medical and personal needs. The family also wishes to thank all of dad’s close friends, who welcomed him into their homes, visited or called him, brought “goodies” to him and prayed for him, especially the members of St. Patrick’s Parish, it made Dad’s last few years so much happier, at a time when his mobility was less. We also want to thank our own friends, who showed such concern for our well being. Resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Rd. on Thursday September 22, 2011 from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. and Friday September 23, 2011 from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Patrick’s Church on Saturday September 24, 2011 at 9:30 a.m. Interment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Topsail Rd. SMART, Ruby (nee Bastow) April 13, 1928 – Sept 17, 2011 - Gracefully departed this earthly world on Saturday, September 17, 2011 to be joyously reunited with her husband Jack, precious grandson David Smart & son-in-law Robert Noseworthy. Greeting Mom on the other side are her parents, Norman & Emily Bastow, brothers Raymond, Frank, Norm & sister Bess. Left with treasured memories are her children Linda (Bob Channing), Sandra Neville, John (Frances) and Ruth (Brian Lacey); grandchildren Leihan & Jacqueline Neville & their father Pat Neville, Andrea, Karen & Rob Channing, John & Paul Smart, Joanne & Carolyn Lacey; great-grand children Brittany Neville, Hayley Hussey-Smart, Amelia Gorman & Jayden Hickey; sisters Dallas Morton-Dalton (Tony), Lillian Logan (Mel), Marg Kelly, Beatrice Picco-Wadland(George), Rose Thain, June Gullage & her brother Dave (Joan) “her fishing buddy”. Left with special memories are her sisters & brothers-in-law: Shirley Bastow, Evelyn Bastow, Bridget Manning (Pat), Kay Smart, Martin Smart (Annie), Michael Smart (Marie) & Tom Smart (Phyllis). Resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road on Saturday from 7pm - 9pm; Sunday from 2pm - 4pm and 7pm - 9pm and Monday from 10am – 12pm. Mom’s love of being in the country was only surpassed by her love of gardening. Butler, Hillary H.

BUTLER, Hillary H. (nee Hynes) – Passed away peacefully at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital on September 17, 2011, Hillary Butler aged 75 years. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories are her children: Sharon Rose (Garry), Gerry (April), Bobby (Connie), Sammy (Sherry), Harold (Debbie) and Chris (Sandy); 21 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; special sister-in-law, Dorothy Hynes; best friend, Ada Street; and she will also be missed and loved by other relatives and many friends. Visitation will take place at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Monday from 12 noon – 9 p.m. with cremation to follow. Funeral service will be held in The Carnell Memorial Chapel Tuesday September 20, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. Flowers gratefully accepted or a donation in Hillary’s memory may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Reddy, Dr. Satti Paddi

REDDY, Dr. Satti Paddi: Passed away after a brief illness on Thursday, September 15, 2011 at Health Sciences Center, age 79 years. Professor Emeritus and Distinguished Scholar, Fellow of the Institute of Physics (London) and Former Head of the Department of Physics, Memorial University of Newfoundland and citizen of Newfoundland since 1963. In addition to his passion for research and teaching, he was a proponent of volunteerism. He served in health and educational activities, community and citizenship organizations, as well as human rights, ethnic diversity, cultural development and national unity associations. He was a founding member of the Friends of India Association, the Ethno-Cultural Association of Newfoundland and the Chinmaya Mission of St. John’s. Pre-deceased by his wife, Parvati and leaving to mourn, brothers, Satyanarayana (Bhagyavati), Krishna (Suguna), Venkata SubbiReddy (Savithri), sisters Saraswati (Karri Venkat) and Varlakshmi (Surnarayana), mother-in-law Suryakantham, brother-in-law Mohan (Jaya); children: Sethu (Lalitha), Bharati (Bhanu Muram) and Suresh (Sathya) and many friends and family here and abroad. His advice and encouragement will be missed by his eight grandchildren - Pranav, Suparna, Vishal and Pavitra Reddy; Sandeep and Chetan Muram; and Paavani and Akhilesh Reddy. Visitation will be at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road on Sunday, September 18th from 1 to 3 PM. A Hindu service will take place at the Hindu Temple of St. John’s on Penney Lane, Sunday evening Sept 18th, 2011 at 6 p.m. to be followed by refreshments. A special thank you to all the staff at Kenny’s Pond Residence and Health Sciences Center. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Hindu Temple of St. John’s or to the Canadian Diabetes Association.
