Pappas, Effie (nee Harding)

PAPPAS, Effie (nee Harding): Passed peacefully away at the Health Sciences Centre on September 4, 2011, Effie Pappas (nee Harding) at age 82. Predeceased by her husband, John Pappas and her sister, Olga Bowden (Fred). Leaving to mourn her daughter Mitzi Smyth (Chris); granddaughter, Jane Smyth; and nephew, Keith Bowden (Linda). Resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Wednesday September 7th, 2011 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Funeral service will be held from the Carnell Memorial Chapel on Thursday September 8th, 2011 at 2:00 pm with interment to follow in the Anglican Cemetery, Bauline Line Extension. Flowers gratefully accepted or a donation in Effie’s memory may be made to the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Care Foundation.

Harnett, Effie

HARNETT, Effie: Passed peacefully away on September 2, 2011, at Masonic Park Nursing Home, Effie Harnett (Jerrett), aged 90 years old originally from Cavendish, Trinity Bay. Predeceased by her husband, John Alfred Harnett (1984), and brother, Frank Jerrett, Baltimore, Maryland. Leaving to mourn with beautiful and loving memories: daughter, Rowena White (Gordon) St. John's and son, Clyde Harnett (Gail) Markham, Ontario; five precious grandchildren: Pamela (Todd Pardy), Paula (Dennis Strickland) and Penny-Lynn (Andrew Cook), St. John's, Scott Harnett (Rachel) and Michelle Harnett, Ontario; four adorable great-grandchildren: Aaron and Lily Harnett, Jackson and Jacob Pardy; sister, Pheobe Lamour (Bill), Beaverton, Ontario; nieces and nephews in Ontario and Maryland, and.; her extended family - the staff and residents of Masonic Park Nursing Home with whom she resided. Resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road with visitation from 7-9 p.m. on Saturday and from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. on Sunday. Mass of Christian burial will take place on Monday, September 5, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. from St. Teresa’s Church, Mundy Pond Road. Interment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Case, Amos Samuel

CASE, Amos: June 8, 1931- August 29, 2011: Passed peacefully away on Monday, August 29, 2011 in his 80th year at the Dr. L.A. Miller Centre, (Samuel) Amos Case, formerly of Salmon Cove. Leaving to mourn: Clara (Winters), his loving wife of 51 years; three sons, Richard (Valerie), Glenn (Sarah), and Bradley (Hannah); his 5 grandsons and one granddaughter; as well as a brother, two sisters and many other relatives and friends. Memorial service to be held at the Carnell Memorial Chapel, 329 Freshwater Road on Wednesday, August 31, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Peddle, Lillian Rose

Peddle, Lillian Rose (nee Tucker) – Passed peacefully away after a long and courageous battle with cancer at the Leonard A. Miller Centre on October 4, 2011. Lillian Peddle, age 64 years. Predeceased by her husband John and mother Mary. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories her daughter Deann Power (Joe), grandchildren Anna, Jon, Cayden and Chloe, sisters Marina Horwood (Boyd), Jean Tulk, Eleanor Rudy (Wayne), brother Bill Tucker (Ruby), many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road with visitation on Wednesday and Thursday from 10:00 a.m.– 12:00 Noon, 2:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00 p.m. Funeral Service will be held on Friday, October 7, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. from St. Philip’s Anglican Church. Interment to follow at St. Philip’s Anglican Cemetery. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations in her memory may be made to St. Philip’s Anglican Church.

Kane, Herbert Chesley

Passed peacefully away on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 in the presence of his loving family at the Health Science Centre, Herbert Chesley Kane, aged 54 years. Leaving to mourn his loving wife of 34 years Lynn (nee Somerton); his adoring children Jim (Jennifer) and Crystal Winter (Travis); mother Vera; brother Alvin (Cyndi); sister Ada Clarke (Mike); also a large circle of cherished family and friends. Predeceased by his mother and father Marguerite and James, and Sister Vicki Laite. Special thanks to the nurses and staff at the ICU, Health Science Centre for their care and compassion. Resting at Carnells Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road with visitation from 2:00-4:00 & 7:00-9:00 p.m. Thursday and Friday, as well as 10:00-12:00 noon on Saturday. Funeral Service on Saturday, October 8, 2011, 2:00 p.m. at St. Lawrence Anglican Church, Portugal Cove. Interment to follow in St. Lawrence Anglican Cemetery, Bauline Line Ext. In lieu of flowers, donations in Herb’s memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to the Children’s Wish Foundation.

Riche, Nancy

RICHE, Nancy (1944-2011) - Passed away October 1st at the Health Sciences Complex in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, age 66 years. A labour organizer and social activist, Nancy was a tireless fighter for working people the world over and for the rights of women. Nancy, whose professional life began as a vocational instructor, went on to become Director of Education, Research and Communication of Newfoundland Association of Public Employees, Secretary-Treasurer of the National Union of Public and General Employees, Executive Vice-President and later Secretary Treasurer of the Canadian Labour Congress, Vice President of the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions in Brussels, President of the Newfoundland and Labrador New Democratic Party, Vice President of the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Labour. Nancy received the Order of Canada, a Dr. of Letters Honoris Causa from Memorial University, the AFL-CIO Meary-Lane Human Rights Award and the Elijah Barayi Award from Congress of South African Trade Unions for her contribution to the struggle against apartheid. She was proud to be a Wren. Leaving to mourn son, Andy Wilson (Caroline): and grandchildren Edward and Charlotte in Montreal, Quebec: brothers: Dick (Doreen) in St. John’s and Lloyd (Heather) in Kitchener, Ontario; many beloved nieces, grandnieces, nephews and grandnephews, as well as large circle of friends. Visitation will take place at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road St. John’s, on Monday and Tuesday from 10 a.m. – 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 10 a.m. – 12 noon. Funeral service to be held from the Salvation Army Temple, Torbay Road, Wednesday, October 5th, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. with interment to follow in the Salvation Army Cemetery, Blackmarsh Road. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Nancy’s memory to the New Democratic Party of Newfoundland and Labrador or Iris Kirby House.

Halliday, Clarence

HALLIDAY, Clarence Charles: Passed peacefully away on September 30, 2011 at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital, Clarence Halliday, aged 70 years. Predeceased by his parents William and Ethel. Leaving to mourn his loving wife of 50 years, Margaret; his children: Theresa (Dan Culleton), Bonita (David Snyder), Craig (Coleen) and Clarence (Elizabeth); his grandchildren: Jason, Krista, Jenny, Justin, Mitchell, Caitlin and Ashley; great--grandchildren: Cassie and Jacob; sister, Bonita; brothers: Hayward and Scott; as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road on Monday, October 3 from 10 a.m to 9 p.m. Funeral service to take place from the Carnell Memorial Chapel on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. with interment to follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donation in Clarence’s memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Nixon, Georgina (nee Barnes)

Passed peacefully away in the presence of her loving family at the Health Science Centre on September 28, 2011, Georgina Nixon (nee Barnes), aged 81 years. Leaving with cherished memories, her loving husband of 59 years Campbell Nixon; two daughters: Debbie (Cecil) Martin and Janet (Wayne) Walsh; one son: David Nixon (Darlene Martin); 10 precious grandchildren: Kelly (Scotty), Chris, Kim, Tina (Jeremy), Matthew, Cameron, Abigail, Louise (Don), Donnie (Cavell) and Kirby; also leaving eight great grandchildren whom she adored. Survived by one brother Duncan along with a large number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 1045 Topsail Rd, Mt. Pearl on Thursday September 29 from 7-9 and Friday September 30 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will take place at St. John the Evangelist Church (Topsail) on Saturday, October 1, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. with interment to follow at St. John the Evangelist Anglican Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Georgina’s memory may be made to The Heart and Stroke Foundation or to the Canadian Cancer Society.
