Best, Maurice Jerome - Passed peacefully away on Monday, October 10th, 2011 in the presence of his loving family at the Health Sciences Centre, Maurice Jerome Best of Southern Harbour, aged 79 years. Predeceased by mother and father, Marion and Leo Best; daughter Rhonda; two brothers: Dom (Rose deceased) and Tom; niece Wanda. Leaving to mourn his loving wife of 58 years, Margaret (nee Whiffen); his children: Joan (Bill), Leo (Diane), Rupert (Helen), Gordon (Wendy), Linda (Ralph), Carol Ann (Shawn), Randy (Pam), and Ricky (Teresa); 20 Grandchildren; 15 Great-grandchildren; sister Donna Hewitt(George); brothers George Finlay (Rita) and Kevin Finlay (Jeri); uncle Dom Leonard; aunt Stella Dunphy; also many other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Resting at St. Xavier R.C. Church, Southern Harbour, October 11, 2011 beginning at 7:00 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Thursday, October 13, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. from St. Xavier R.C. McGrath, Robert Wiley – Passed peacefully away on Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at the Health Science Centre, Robert Wiley McGrath, age 71 years. Leaving to mourn his loving wife of 37 years, Karen (nee Mahoney); two sons: Thomas and Robert; sisters: Elizabeth O’Leary and Marge Metz (David); sisters-in-law: Erin Mahoney (John Stevenson) and Lynn Mahoney (Eric Stevenson); brothers-in-law: Tom Mahoney (Judy Power), Denis Mahoney (Jacqueline) and John Mahoney (Leslie Ann); friend since childhood Robert Murphy (Helen Hynes) also many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, with visitation from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday and 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Thursday. Hatcher, Gordon (Pasadena) – December 14, 1936 – October 11, 2011 – Passed peacefully away at the Health Science Centre, St. John’s. Leaving to mourn wife Adelaide; daughters Karen (Dave) Grand Bank, Anne Hatcher (Michael Walsh) Mt. Pearl; grandchildren Stephanie (Cody), Jennifer, Stephen, Beth and Lia; sisters Effie, Ruth (Reuben); sister-in-law Rita, St. Catherine’s ON; brothers-in-law George, Eric (Diane), Earl (Stella), Owen (Cathy), Sam (Christina)and Arnold (Christine); sister-in-law Vye (Peter) and other relatives and friends. Predeceased by parents Ira and Winnifred Hatcher, brothers Reginald and James and brother-in-law Clarence. Cremation has taken place. Relatives and friends may visit the family on Friday, October 14, 2011 from 7-9 p.m. at St. David’s Anglican Church in Pasadena. Penney, Margaret (Maggie)
With great sadness, we announce the passing of Margaret Rose (Maggie) Penney, on October 11, 2011. Maggie was born in Grand Falls in 1961, and lived in St. John’s, Toronto, and finally in Manuels, Conception Bay South. She leaves to mourn her parents, Margaret Penney and Ches Penney (Iris); her siblings: Jill (Bob), Chris (Anne), Gail (Jim), Dan (Barbara), Chesley (Tamara), and Joe (Connie), and their children, Maggie’s nieces and nephews: Jennifer, Jill, Dylan, Jackson, Julia, Diana, Charlotte, Grace, Cecilia, Anna, Sophie, Emily, Sarah, and Chesley; her step-mother Kristine Penney and half-sisters Hayley and Chelsea, her step-brother Grayson Ewing, her good friend, Rod White, and her canine boys, Charlie and Sam. Also many aunts, uncles and cousins. Maggie was an artist, a gardener, and a devoted animal lover. She was a ‘rescuer’ and often joked that the Guardian Angel of strays knew her address. Her kind-heartedness and gentleness were an inspiration to her family. She now rests in peace at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, with visitation Friday, October 14th from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. and Saturday, October 15th from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. A private family service will follow. Cremation has taken place. Donations in Maggie’s memory may be directed to the SPCA or the Canadian Mental Health Association-Newfoundland and Labrador.
Kavanagh, Timothy John
Kavanagh, Timothy (Tim) J. – Passed away peacefully on Oct. 12th, 2011 in the presence of his family after a lengthy illness, Tim Kavanagh, age 55 years. Predeceased by his father Thomas (Bud) Kavanagh. Lovingly remembered by his wife Bonnie of 25 years, daughters Julia and Emily and son Sean. Also left with fond memories his mother Margaret (Peg) Kavanagh; sister Mary; brothers Michael (Colleen) and Bernard; sisters-in-law Karen Murphy, Jodi Murphy and Lori Case (Greg); brothers-in-law John Murphy (Yvonne) and Bill Murphy (Kathie); many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Tim served as a proud Rotarian for the past 10 years with the Rotary Club of St. John’s Northwest and was a recent recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow Award. He was an avid tennis player who was also President of both Riverdale and Greenbelt Tennis Clubs. Moores, Frederick (Ted) Thomas (January 27, 1931 – October 14, 2011) - Passed peacefully away at the Health Sciences Centre, St. John’s, in the presence of his loving family. Leaving to mourn his wife and partner of 59 years Irene (nee Chafe); sons Fred (Kathy) and Jeff (Dale); daughter Heather (Ray Lannon); grandchildren Steven Lannon, Stacey Lannon, and Tisha Horner; sister Ada Day (Joe); brothers-in-law George Chafe (Joyce), Cyril Chafe (Marion), John McCabe (Dorothy); sisters-in-law Dulcie Butler, Elsie Chafe, Marg Chafe; and other relatives and friends. Predeceased by brother Ron (Kay) and sisters Alma (Ted Pritchard), Hilda (Reg Penney), Jean (John Donovan), Nance (Bill Walsh), Marjorie (Arthur Ledrew), Marion (Joe Mercer), and Edna (Ralph). Ted was a Reservist with the Royal Newfoundland Regiment in his youth. He went on to a dedicated 42-year career with the St. John’s Transportation Commission. His keen sense of humour and ingenuity will be remembered always and live on in his children and grandchildren. Special thanks to the professionals at the Health Sciences Centre for their care and compassion. Resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road. Visitation Monday, October 17, 7 – 9 pm and Tuesday, October 18, 2 – 4 pm and 7 – 9 pm. Funeral service will be held from the Carnell Memorial Chapel on Wednesday, October 19 at 11 am. BEST, RUTH (nee Reid) - Passed peacefully away at the Glenbrook Lodge, St. John’s, on January 14th, 2012. Ruth Best formally of Tacks beach, aged 94 years. Predeceased by husband Heber; daughters Alma and Vera; granddaughter Donna and sisters: Jean, Sylvia, Blanche and Annie; brother, Harold and son in law Manuel Pottle. Leaving to mourn daughters Shirley Pottle, Victoria, Rowena Lewis (Rob), Oregon; Iris Gach (Dale), Maple Ridge; sons: Ralph (Jean), Foxtrap, Harvey (Lorraine), High River, and Adam, Fort McMurray; brothers: Ern (Annie), Kelligrews and Gordon (Ethel), Arnolds Cove; sisters: Meta, Arnolds Cove, Sadie, Arnolds Cove, Elsie, St. John’s and Irene, Garden Cove; 13 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren and a large circle of relatives and friends. MARTIN-CROTTY, Judy Catherine: Passed suddenly away at home on Saturday, January 14, 2012, Judy Catherine Martin (Crotty) at the age of 56 years. Leaving to mourn her loving husband John Crotty; daughter Catherine; son, John; her parents, Catherine and James Martin; mother-in-law Angela Crotty; sister, Brenda Fay (Danny); brothers: Robert (Miriam MacLeod), Greg (Marlene), Jim (Lyn), Bernard (Heather) and Dennis; sister-in-law, Pauline Hayes (Steve); also a large number of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins of the Crotty, Healey and Martin families. Cremation has taken place.
