Newhook, Ronald Newman

Ronald Newman Newhook Passed peacefully away, in the presence of his loving family, on Tuesday, April 17, 2012 at the Hoyles Home, Ronald Newman Newhook, aged 86 years. Predeceased by his mother Pearl, father Harry, brother Frank, and special aunt and uncle, Amy and Ford Dart. Devoted father, leaving to mourn children Bonnie (Ron) Richards, Cherie Newhook, Robert (Eva) Newhook, Harry Newhook (Ellen Dalton-deceased), Cynthia (Leo) Buckle, Sheila Newhook (Craig Button) and their mother Marie Newhook . Dear grandfather of Michael, Robbie, Kerri Lyn, Ian, Victoria, Alexandria, Matthew, Maria, Mark, Andrew, and Linda, and great-grandfather of Leah and Isabelle. Also leaving to mourn, brothers Albert (Faye) Newhook, Bob (Maude) Newhook, sister Amy (Jack) Burden and sister-in-law Shirley Budgell. Born, raised, and married in Badger, NL, Ron moved to Corner Brook in 1951 where he raised his family and was an active member of the community. As president and general manager of North Star Cement Limited and member of the board of directors of Atlantic Minerals, Ron loved his work and was very appreciative of all who worked with him. Ron was a lifelong member of the Corner Brook Rotary Club and over the years served as Secretary Treasurer and Honorary Secretary Treasurer of the Rotary Musical Festival. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and enjoyed these activities with his good friends Sterling Randell and Arthur Lundrigan. Special thanks to the caring staff at Hoyles-Escasoni Home for all their help and support. Also, thanks to niece Joanne Rose for your love and care. At his request, there will be no service or visitation. Donations may be made to the Altzheimers Society or charity of one’s choice.

Spurrell, Vera F.

Passed peacefully away at the Hoyles Home on April 17, 2012, Vera Spurrell, age 78. Predeceased by her husband, Manuel and grandson Tyler. Left with fond and loving memories sons: Don (Judy), Manuel (Joyce), Frank (Ethel), Glen (Lisa), Jerry (Jaime); daughter, Fern Somerton (Dave); grandchildren: Sherry Murugan (Shan), Justin and Jeremy Somerton, Lindsey and Manuel Spurrell, Sheldon Spurrell, Kyle and Kourtney Spurrell; great-grandchildren: Aiden and Sydney Murugan; brother, Gordon Bradbury (Catherine); sisters: Stella Hamlyn and Maureen Westcott; daughter-in-law: Donna Rice; special sister-in-law, Dorothy Loveless (Albert) and nieces: Janice and Donna Spurrell as well as many other relatives and friends. The family wish to express their sincere thanks to the staff of PCU and West 2. Resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road with visitation on Saturday and Sunday from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held on Monday April 23, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. from St. Philip’s Anglican Church. Interment to follow at St. Philip’s Anglican Cemetery. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations in her memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society.

Dunphy, Joseph A.

DUNPHY, Joseph A.- Passed peacefully away, on April 18th, 2012 Joseph A. Dunphy, age 85 years. Left to mourn with fond and loving memories his wife of 49 years, Elizabeth (Armstrong); daughter, Dr. Janet Dunphy (Louis Gauthier) and grandchildren: Isabelle, Alex and Francois, Perth, Australia as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Cremation has taken place. Relatives and friends may visit the family at Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road on Tuesday, April 24, from 7-9 p.m. and on Wednesday, April 25 from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held on Thursday, April 26, 2012 at 9:30 a.m. from St. Pius X Parish. Interment will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations in his memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Hodder, Mary

Hodder, Mary - Passed peacefully away, on Wednesday, April 18th, 2012, at Agnes Pratt Nursing Home, in her 82nd, year. Predeceased by her Parents, Peter and Mary Whittle; brother, Brian and sister Maureen Burcham. Left with loving memories husband, Eric; children: Keith (Dianne), Carolyn (Rob Hutchings), Valerie (Doug Hynes), Randy (Cheryl), Ian (Barb White); precious grandchildren who she adored: Robyn (Brad Savoury), Zach Hutchings, Cayley and Claire Hodder, Katie Hodder, Marc, Jordan and Lauren Hodder; brothers, Randolph Whittle (Dot) and Peter Whittle (Patsy); brother –in- law, Reverend Morley Hodder (Vera) as well as a number of nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. At this time the family would like to express heartfelt thanks to the staff of Fairhaven at Agnes Pratt Nursing Home for the exemplary care given to mom during her stay there. We would also like to express our appreciation for the exceptional support offered to the family during the past few days. We will always be grateful to them. At Mary's request, cremation has taken place. Resting at Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road on Friday and Saturday from 2-4 & 7-9 pm. Funeral service to take place on Monday, April 23, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. from St. Teresa’s Parish, Mundy Pond Road. Interment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Donations in Mary’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of NL.

SHORT, Chesley James: Passed peacefully away at the Agnes Pratt Nursing Home on April 19, 2012, Ches Short, age 79 years. Retired employee of Marine Atlantic and honourary lifetime member of Neptune Lodge. Predeceased by his parents, James and Hannah; brothers: Joe Harris, Roy Short, George Short, Philip Short and sister, Beatrice Short. Left with fond and loving memories his wife of 50 years, Vida; daughter, Carolyn Strugnell; son, Darryl (Dawna); sisters: Marjorie Coley, Burgeo and Juanita Witham, Dartmouth; granddaughter, Nicole Strugnell; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Special thanks to the staff at PCU, Hoyles Escasoni and Fairhaven Residence, Agnes Pratt. Resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road with visitation on Saturday & Sunday from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held from the Carnell Memorial Chapel on Monday, April 23, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. Interment to follow at the Anglican Cemetery, Kenmount Road. Donations in his memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society or to a charity of one’s choice.

Bugden, Alma

Bugden, Alma (Evelly) nee Ingraham - Passed peacefully away on her 94th birthday, April 21st, 2012, surrounded by her loving children and grandchildren. Born on Hunt's Island, Burgeo in 1918, Alma was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and a woman of great strength. She spent most of her life giving back to her community including 65 years serving the Anglican Church Women's Association. She volunteered with the Ladies Auxiliary of the Church Lads Brigade and the Ladies Orange Benevolent Association. She was President of the Ladies Auxiliary Masonic Park and formed the first Home and School Association in Manuels in the 1950's, among other volunteer activities. Predeceased by parents Henry and Augusta Ingraham, her first husband Donald Evelly (1975) and second husband Maxwell Bugden (2001); son Donnie (1952) aged seven years; brothers Joseph, Sandy, and Hubert; sisters Myrtle and Leah; son-in-law Michael Hurley. Left with fond and loving memories, sisters: Mary (Eric) Foote, Eileen (Don) Neilson; daughter Genista Hurley (partner Ray Harnum); son Edward (Claudine) Evelly; grandchildren: Michelle (Jim) Ploughman, Carla (Anthony) Wiseman, David (Lesley) Hurley, Christa (Darin) Steeves, Cara (Mark) Pike; ten great ¬grandchildren: Luke and Sean Ploughman, Julia Wiseman, Anna and Thomas Hurley, Kelsey, Ella and Claudia Steeves, and Emily and Jane Pike. Also leaving to mourn step-sons: Paul and Howard (Bud) Bugden (partner Sarah); step-daughters Carolyn Torraville (Bob), Gloria, and step-grandchildren: Cindy, Janna, Keith, David and Steven. The family wish to thank Masonic Park for the 30 happy years she lived there, the staff at Karwood Retirement Retreat for making her recent years there special; and the staff of the Palliative Care Unit for their wonderful care. Resting at Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, with visitation on Sunday, April 22, 7:00-9:00 pm and Monday, April 23rd, from 2:00-4:00 pm and again from 7:00-9:00pm. Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, April 24th, at 2:00 pm from the Church of the Ascension, Smallwood Drive, Mt. Pearl. Interment to follow at St. John the Evangelist Cemetery, Topsail. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations in her memory to be made to the Autism Society of Newfoundland & Labrador.

Emberley, Fronie May nee Chaulk

Passed peacefully away at the Health Science Center on April 24, 2012 surrounded by her loving family. Fronie May Emberley aged 83 years. Predeceased by her parents Elihu Chaulk and Daisy Porter. Left to mourn her loving husband of 61 years Charles, six children: Geoff (Linda), Bruce (Rosalind), Robert (Carolyn), Doug (Sandra), Jill (Kevin Marston), and David (Michelle). 13 grand children who she loved dearly: Stephen (Nadine), Justin (Diane), Julie (Tracey), Suzanne (Michael), Samantha (Mike), Jason, Jennifer, Greg (Sarah), Lisa (Mark), Belinda, Emily, Peter and Harry. Four great-grand children: Nason, Marshall, Zoey and Andie, all whom she adored. Also leaving a large circle of other relatives and friends. Resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 1045 Topsail Road, Mt. Pearl on Wednesday, April 25, 2012 from 7-9 p.m., Thursday, April 26, 2012 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. also on Friday, April 27, 2012 from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. Funeral service will take place on Friday, April 27, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at The Church of the Ascension, Smallwood Drive. Interment to follow at the Field of Honor in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations in Fronie’s memory may be made to the Church of the Ascension.

Piercey, Olive Grace

Piercey, Olive Grace (nee Read) - Passed peacefully away at Glenbrook Lodge in St. John's on Wednesday, April 25th, 2012 in her 83rd year. Born in Norris Point, Bonne Bay, Olive was a strong and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Predeceased by parents Thomas and Margaret Read, sister Alfreda Read, brother George (Evelyn & Winnie) Read, sister Sylvia (Stephen) March and two infant children, Beverly Ann and David George. Leaving to mourn with loving memories are her husband of 64 years Melvin; sons David (Susan) in Ottawa and Craig (Shelia) in Long Pond; five grandchildren: Christopher (Tanya) in Banff, Stephen (Sherri) in Ottawa, Kevin in Canmore, Tiffany in Calgary and Brittany in Chamberlains; three special great-grandchildren: Owen, Eva and Annabelle and special niece Fay (Willis) Howell of Foxtrap. Also leaving to mourn a large circle of close friends at Masonic Park Senior's Complex in Mount Pearl where Melvin and Olive lived for over 15 years. The family would like to thank the staff and nurses and visiting clergy of Glenbrook Lodge for their fantastic care over the past month. Memorial Service will be held on Friday, May 4th, at 2:00 pm at the Church of the Ascension, Smallwood Drive, Mt. Pearl. Interment to follow in North Sydney, Nova Scotia at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to Carnell's Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Newfoundland & Labrador or a charity of one’s choice.
