Parsons, Dr. William David

Dr. William David Parsons MD, CM, FRCP(C) ONL, MSC died in St.John’s after a short illness. Predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Dr. Daphne (Arklie) in 2006 and by his sisters Margaret (Jack) Hodgson and Joan (Jack) Woods. Leaving to mourn three sons and four grandchildren; Keith (Debbie) and daughter Sarah; Ean (Jane) and children Katie and Colin; Andrew (Catherine) and son George. Also one sister-in-law, Leonora Arklie, in Edmonton. He leaves five nieces and nephews and many friends and relations. A graduate of McGill University in 1951, Dr.Parsons returned to Newfoundland to practise medicine, initially in Twillingate and then in St.John’s. He later specialised in internal medicine and was President of the Newfoundland Medical Association and was named Senior Member of the Canadian Medical Association. He was particularly known for his work with Veterans. He was involved with Memorial University’s Medical School from its inception and held the appointment of Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine and the History of Medicine. His career spanned the breadth of serving on two Royal Commissions, on the board of the Medical Care Plan, the Workers’ Compensation Board, working at the Newfoundland Telephone Company and at the Department of Veterans’ Affairs. He was passionate about history and in retirement became an acknowledged authority on Newfoundland in the First World War. He loved touring battlefields and historic sites and sharing his knowledge with the current generation; in schools; with the Royal Newfoundland Regiment and at The Rooms. This contribution was recognised in 2015 with the award of the Order of Newfoundland as well as the Meritorious Service Cross of Canada. In a very full life, Dr. Parsons was at various times, a soldier, a physician, an educator, an administrator, a Presbyterian Church Elder, an historian, a proud Newfoundlander and loving family man. The family would like to thank all who cared for him in recent years particularly, housekeeper Phyllis Brennan, the staff of Tiffany Village and Dr. Roger Butler. A service of thanksgiving will take place at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church on Queen’s Road on Saturday, 16th April 2016 at 3:00 PM. Visitation will take place at Carnell’s Funeral Home on Thursday April 14th between 7:00 and 9:00 PM and on Friday April 15th between 2:00 and 4:00 PM and 7:00 and 9:00 PM. No flowers by request but donations may be made in his memory to St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church or the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada. A private interment will follow at a later date.

Vey, Edna Lavinia

Passed peacefully, on Monday April 11, 2016 at Lakeside Homes in Gander, aged 85 years. Predeceased by her parents Eliah and Lydia Blundon, her husband Reginald, two brothers Jack and Ronald and four sisters Loretta, Hilda, Mary and Gladys. Leaving to mourn her son Gary (Jennifer), grandchildren Reginald, Kelly (Jeff), Christopher (Amy), great grandchildren Taylor, James and Nash and her brother George Blundon (Gloria), nieces and nephews. Resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home 329 Freshwater Road with visitation on Wednesday, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held from Carnell’s Chapel on Thursday, April 14, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. Interment to follow at Anglican Cemetery, Kenmount Road. Flowers gratefully accepted or memorial donation to Heart & Stroke Foundation.

Canning, Joseph

Surrounded by his loving family, Joseph P. Canning, aged 88, passed peacefully away at Kenny's Pond Retirement Residence on April 11, 2016. Pre-deceased by his son, Peter. Left to mourn are his loving wife, Patricia (nee Brown), five children: Martha, Caroline (Rob), John, Joe (Terri), Jim (Allison) and two sisters: Regina, Mildred (Sam), and special friend, Phyllis-Marie. Also left to mourn are seven grandchildren: Adam (Kristen), Christine (Chad), Julia, Dayton, Will, Tyler, and Billy-Jim; three great grand-children: Desmond, Deidra, and Grant. Special thanks to Dr. Burrage, Lisa Hussey (NP), Dr. Thompkins, Dr. O'Shea, the staff at Kenny's Pond Retirement Residence, Community Health Nurses, Father Leo English and Father Tony Bidgood. A well respected businessman, he was renowned for his hard work as President of Nord Limited. To honor this kind and gentle man, a loving husband, father, and grandfather, a Mass in celebration of his life will be held at St. Theresa's Church, Mundy Pond Road, on Thursday, April 14 at 11 a.m.. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Care Centre. Reception to follow the Mass. "We promise you we will treasure our memories of you and those moments which brought a smile to your face. We promise you we will continue to live our lives in a way that will bring joy to your spirit. We love you and we miss you."

Lake, Evelyn Caroline (nee Riggs)

Lake, Evelyn Caroline (nee Riggs) – Passed peacefully away after a courageous battle with cancer on Sunday, April 10th, 2016 surrounded by her loved ones, Evelyn Lake, age 85 years. Predeceased by her parents, Wilson and Olive (Caines) Riggs; brothers, Kenneth, Samuel, Lloyd and Clarence; sister, Eleanor. Leaving to mourn loving husband of 62 years, John; children: John (Vanessa), Glenda and Ken (Barbara); her precious grandchildren: Mac, Glenda, Connor, Harrison, John and Catie; brother, Tom Riggs; sisters: Norma Sutton and Mildred Murphy; sisters-in-law: Jane and Effie Riggs; also many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Cremation has taken place. The Family will be receiving visitors at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road on Tuesday, April 12th, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service to be held on Wednesday, April 13th, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. from St. Augustine’s Anglican Church, Westerland Road. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations in her memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Foundation.

Berghuis, Elizabeth Jane

Berghuis, Elizabeth Jane (Nee Osmond) - Passed peacefully away on April 9, 2016 in her 51st year after a long, courageous battle with cancer. Leaving to mourn her loving husband, Derrick, predeceased by her father Robert Baden and her Aunt Gussie. Survived by her mother Patricia and mother in law Elisabeth Berghuis. Her sister Michele, brother John and many nieces and nephews, uncles, aunts and cousins on both sides of the family. Visitation at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road Tuesday April 12, 2016 from 4:00pm to 9:00pm. Funeral service to be held at St David’s Presbyterian Church, 98 Elizabeth Ave, St John’s on Wednesday April 13, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow. Byrne, Elizabeth Ann (nee Godden)

Passed away suddenly with her precious and loyal dog “Roxy” at her side, Elizabeth Ann Byrne (Sue), aged 75. Predeceased by her husband Jim “Ocker” Byrne (September, 2009); her mother Patricia Gaze Gunn & father Edward Godden. The best of “Sue” and “Ocker” and their love for life, laughter and family will live forever with the families of her three boys. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories her three sons David (Nancy), Peter (Pam), Jeff (Robyn); cherished grandchildren Lauren, Noah and Steve, siblings Edward (Cheryl), Robert (Margaret), Lynn (Brian), Paula, and Tom (Cheryl; very special Aunt Beatrice Mastropietro and her daughter Linda; sister’s in-law Edna Graham, Anna Byrne, Mary Kalichuck, and Margie O’Toole and families, all living in Brantford, Ontario; brother in-law Rudy Albonico in California; and a circle of extended family and friends. Visitation will take place at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Thursday, April 14th from 2 - 4 and 7 – 9 p.m. Funeral service will take place on Friday, April 15, 2016 at 2:00 pm from The Carnell Memorial Chapel. Interment to follow at the General Protestant Cemetery on Waterford Bridge Road. Flowers are gratefully accepted.

Baird, Robert

Robert (Bob) Baird - August 26, 1936 - April 9, 2016 - Passed peacefully away at St. Clare's Hospital, surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, April 9, 2016 at the age of 79 years. Predeceased by his parents Samuel and Margaret Baird; siblings, May (John) McBride, Margaret Bradley and Jim (Jean) Baird; brothers in law, Don Webber & Kevin Wiseman. Leaving to mourn his loving wife of 45 years Cecilia Baird; sons: Craig and Darren (Melvine) Baird; and two very special grandchildren Samantha (Justin) and Benjamin Baird. Sadly, missed by his brothers and sisters in law: David Bradley, Theresa (Jim) Casey, Roy (Joan) Wiseman, Dorothy Coates, Selina Webber, Bernice (Monty) Oliver, Gloria (Bill) Hayward, Jeanette Bailey, Jerry (Judy) Webber, Sharon (Paul) Barron; as well as nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Bob was born in Alexandria, Dumbartonshire, Scotland. In his early working years he worked on a cable ship which lead him to St. John's, NL where he met Cecilia. They were married in Newfoundland then moved to Scotland for a few years before settling back in Newfoundland to raise their family and Bob worked at Sobeys until he retired. He loved the game of soccer and was a huge fan of Manchester United. Cremation has taken place. The family will be receiving visitors at Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road with visitation being held on Monday, April 11, 2016 from 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 12, 2016 from the Carnell Memorial Chapel at 2:00 p.m. with interment to follow at the Anglican Cemetery, Kenmount Road. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation.

Campbell, Systy Janet (nee Drover)

Passed peacefully away at the Health Sciences Complex On Friday, April 8, 2016, in the presence of her loving family, Systy Janet Campbell. Predeceased by her siblings Dennis and Robert. Leaving to mourn her loving and devoted husband Ian; children Steven (Bernadette), Jane (Andrew) Dunne and Robert (Melissa); grandchildren Claire, Ben and Molly Dunne; siblings Howard (Madeline), Rusty (Ed) and Ted (Pearl); and special friend Judy Miller; also a number of other relatives and friends. Resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Monday April 11 and Tuesday April 12 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday April 13 at 11:00 a.m. from the Carnell Memorial Chapel with interment to follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations in Systy Janet’s memory may be made to Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Care Foundation.
