Curran, Thomas Ian

Curran, Thomas Ian - It is with great sadness that the family of THOMAS IAN CURRAN announce his peaceful passing at the palliative unit at the Miller Centre on April 25th, 2016, at age 65. Predeceased by Parents: Thomas V. and Margaret (MacPherson); brother, Jamie. Leaving to mourn, sons: Michael and Ian; Grandson: Bryan; Sisters: Anne Currie (Gerry), Marie Dalton (Gil), Sheila, Penny Buchanan ( Bob), and sister-in-law Melody . Also a large number of other relatives and close friends from both St. John's and his hometown of Gambo. We would also like to thank the entire staff at the palliative unit for making Tom as comfortable as possible during his time there. At Tom's request, cremation has been preformed and a celebration of Tom's life will take place at Bally Haly Country Club on Wednesday afternoon from 4pm- 7pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of your choice.

Hampson, Dr. Michael Chisnall

Dr. Michael Chisnall Hampson died at Health Sciences Centre on Sunday morning, 1 May 2016. Michael died of lung disease in the company of his family and friends. Mike was born in Manchester, England, on 29 July 1930. Mike obtained his undergraduate degree in agricultural sciences at the University of Wales, Bangor. Mike taught in London, and was posted to Germany as a Signal Corp officer in order to fulfill his military obligation. Mike came to Canada in 1957 for master's level graduate studies at McDonald College, McGill University in Point Clair, Québec. He then taught high school again for a year in the Belchure Islands, Hudson Bay. Mike completed his doctorate in plant pathology at Cornell University, New York State. Upon completion, he accepted a research scientist position with the Agriculture Canada Research Station in Mount Pearl; he held that position until his retirement in 1997. Mike was always passionate about music and culture; he loved to study and play traditional jazz on his cornet. He was skilled with many instruments; Mike started Dr. Jazz—a jazz band that played locally and was noted for their performances at the St. John’s Folk Festival. Mike is survived by his loving wife, Vicky; children, Joel (N-Q) & Dinah (Graham); and granddaughters, Zoe & Katia. Cremation has taken place. The family will receive visitors at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Wednesday, May 4 from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held from the Carnell Memorial Chapel on Thursday, May 5 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The Lung Association and Arthritis Society.

England, Bernice Theresa

Passed peacefully away at the Glenbrook Lodge on May 1st, 2016, Bernice England, aged 83 years. Predeceased by her parents Art and Annie Stansbury; sister Sadie, and brothers Frank and Bill Stansbury. Bernice will me missed but fondly remembered by her best friend and husband Doug; beloved son Wayne and wife Geraldine; her grandson Douglas and wife Dawn; also sisters Vera, husband James Deveraux; Marie Gilbert and Norm Stoyles; brother in law Warren, wife Shirley; sister in law Hope, niece Joanne, husband Eddie; and very best friends Theresa and Charles Williams; also a large circle of relatives and friends. Bernice was very active in the Royal Canadian Legion being past Vice President in the Ladies Auxiliary of Branch 1 and founding member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Korean War Veterans Association; also founding executive member of TETA. We wish to thank all the staff and the very special and gifted caregivers of Glenbrook Lodge. Every day when I visited her I could see the smile on her face and I knew only God could do a better job. As per her wishes, there will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Funeral service will be held on May 4th, 2016, from Corpus Christi Church at 11:30 a.m. with interment to follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Donations in Bernice’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s society.

Goulding, Lester

Passed peacefully away at his home in St. John’s on Tuesday, May 3, 2016, surrounded by his loving family, Lester Goulding, aged 89. Lester is predeceased by his parents Stephen and Elizabeth Goulding; his brothers Ray, William, Clar and Milton; and sister Ida. Left to mourn his loss are Lester’s loving wife of 65 years, Elsie; his son, Carl (Jackie); daughters Kathy, Heather (Garfield Lawrence), and Denyse (Gary Trask); his grandchildren Mark (Krista), Justin and Rebecca Goulding, Heather and Adam Roberts, Joshua and Jonathan Lawrence, Christopher (Angela) and Matthew Trask; great-grandson Jackson Goulding; his sister Jeanette Price and a wide circle of extended family and friends. Born in Grand Falls, Lester grew up with a strong work ethic and family values that guided him throughout his life. Lester was a loving husband and a devoted father and grandfather. Lester’s life’s work and love of music is evidenced in his achievement as a music teacher and band director at Brother Rice High School, Mount Cashel and St. Patrick’s Hall Boys School, and his fifty-four year career with Casavant Freres Ltee, maintaining, repairing and restoring pipe organs in the churches of communities throughout the province. Always willing to share a story, Lester’s sense of humour, intelligence and wide circle of interest made him a valued friend and colleague. He will be missed. Special thanks are extended to the Eastern Health Palliative Homecare team of doctors, nurses and attendants, whose support made it possible for Lester to remain at home with his family, as he wished. Cremation has taken place. Visitation with family and friends will take place on Thursday, May 5, and Friday, May 6, at Carnell’s Funeral Home on Freshwater Road, from 2:00pm–4:00pm and 7:00pm–9:00pm. The funeral service will take place at Gower Street United Church at 2:00pm, on Saturday, May 7, followed by inurnment at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations in Lester’s memory can be made to the pipe organ restoration fund of Gower Street United Church.

Snow, A. Garfield

Snow, A. Garfield – Passed peacefully away at the Health Science Centre in the presence of his loving family, on Tuesday May 3rd, 2016, Albert Snow, age 70 years. Predeceased by his wife Brenda; parents, Samuel and Selina Snow. Leaving to mourn his four sons: Gary (Sarah), London, ON, Darrell (Sheri Keats) and Ricky (Kaitlyn Caines) Bill Snow (Karen); daughter, Wanda Snow; twelve grandchildren; two great grandchildren; two brothers-in-law: John Kearley (Margaret) and Ralph Kearley (Dorothy); six sisters-in-law: Nina Freeborn (Ward), Dianne Sutcliffe (Larry), Cathy Sheppard (Jim), Freda Kearley, Josie Augot (Ernie) and Sherry Sheppard; also many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Cremation has taken place.

Squires, Leslie Charles

Passed peacefully away at the Health Sciences Centre on Friday, May 6th, 2016, Leslie Charles Squires, aged 74 years. Predeceased by his parents Robert and Isabelle, brother Robert Jr, and brother-in-law John Tucker. Leaving to mourn his partner Hilda, and her son Jody (Kelly); sons Errol (Michelle), Graham, and Kirby (Tracy), and their mother Viola; grandchildren Leslie, Errol (Nicole), Jessie, Mackenzie, and Jaidyn; greatgrandchildren Nicholas, Lucas, and MaKayla; sisters Edna and Linda (Greg); brothers Bronze (Christine), Phil (Barb), Dick (Sandra), Dave, and Ron (Bev); special friends Terry Wiseman, Pat and Kay Wadden; as well as many other relatives and friends. Cremation has taken place. The family will be receiving visitors at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Sunday, May 8th, 2016 from 10 a.m – 9 p.m. A funeral service will be held in the Carnell Memorial Chapel on Monday, May 9th, 2016 at 1 p.m, with inurnment to follow in the St. Philip’s Anglican Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Leslie’s memory to the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Care Foundation.

Lawlor, Philip

Passed peacefully away on May 8th, 2016, Philip Lawlor, aged 62. Predeceased by his parents Leo and Janet Lawlor and brothers Roy and Leonard. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories of his wife Joan; children Gary (Cyndi); Corinne (Brendan), Jannifer (Robert), Robert (Amanda); grandchildren Samantha, Steven, Nathaniel, Cora, Caden, Logan, Olivia, Anastasia and Colby; brothers Harold (Olga), Billy (Tina), Dan (Lori), Nelson (Dawn), Leo, Sandy, Steve (Ann), Calvin (Lana) and Michael; sister Winnie (Ron), Agnes (Freeman), Joan (David) and Judy (Ed); as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews and friends. A special thank you to sister Agnes and brother Bill for their care and compassion and to the nursing staff at 4 South A. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will take place at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Wednesday, May 11th, from 7-9 p.m. and Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held from the Carnell Memorial Chapel on Friday, May 13th at 11:00 a.m. in lieu of Flowers, memorial donations may be made to a Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Care Foundation.

Pinksen, Shirley May

Passed away suddenly at Western Memorial Hospital, Shirley May Pinksen, aged 72 years; wife, mother, grandmother, sister, friend. Predeceased by her parents Frederick and Pearl Croucher; sister Yvonne Noftall; brothers Clyde Croucher, Guy Croucher, Jim Croucher, and Pierce Croucher; daughter-in-law Kimberly Bowers Pinksen; and brother-in-law Mick Flynn. Leaving to mourn her loving husband of 50 years Ivor Pinksen; sons Daryl (Amparo) and Todd (Bobby); daughter Kara; Grandchildren Aidan Langer, Elias Langer, Eva Langer, Jake Pinksen, and Michael Pinksen; sisters Marjorie (Eric) Goudie, Floss Flynn, and Judy Harrison; brothers Jerry (Doris) Croucher, Wayne (Darlene) Croucher, Tony (Daisy) Croucher, and Eugene Croucher; sisters-in-law Alvy Croucher, Emma Croucher, and Kathy Croucher; brother-in-law Duke Noftall; as well as a large circle of extended family and friends. Resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road. The family will receive visitors on Wednesday, May 11th, 2016 from 2 – 4 p.m, and 7 – 9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at Bethesda Pentecostal Church, on Thursday, May 12th, 2016 at 2 p.m, with interment to follow in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Flowers gratefully accepted, or donations in Shirley’s memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
