McDonald, John

Passed away peacefully at PCU on May 8, 2016, John McDonald, aged 75 years. Predeceased by his parents Patrick and Lillian (Thompson) McDonald; step-mother Madeline McDonald; brothers Patrick (Gug), Harold (Howie) (Madeline), James (Jimmy), Joseph, Michael, Paul and Bill; sister Stella (Biddy) Fleming; brothers in law Gerald Fleming, Tom Rice and Eddie Woodfine. He is survived by his sisters Mary Rice, Margaret (Marge) Forward (Bob), Anne Woodfine, Patsy (Dolly) Quigley (Joey); brothers Gus Kevin (Carolyn), Donald (Ninny) (Wanda- Special Care giver); sisters in law Madge McDonald, Ruth McDonald, and Carol McDonald; special friend Dougie Raymond; also a large circle of other nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins, family and friends. The family would like to send a special thank you to the team at the PCU for their care and compassion. A very special thank you to Father Mick Fleming for returning home to attend John’s service. Resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Monday May 9 and Tuesday May 10 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service to be held from St. Teresa’s Church on Wednesday May 11 at 1:00 p.m. with interment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations in John’s memory may be made to the Autism Society of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Care Foundation or to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Earle, Dorothy Williams (nee Carnell)

Earle, Dorothy Williams (nee Carnell) died in the presence of family and friends at her Kenny’s Pond residence on May 9, 2016 after a brief illness, in her 98th year. Predeceased by her husband Brian. She leaves to mourn and celebrate her zest for life daughters Yvonne and Jane; son Harold; special grandchildren Catherine and Sean Church (St. John’s), Angelica Dale (Halifax); extra daughters Janice Cowan, Marguerite Jones, and Linda Dale; and nephews, nieces, and grandnieces. Dorothy will be remembered by several generations of Memorial University graduates for her time as their chemistry lab instructor (1960 – 1983). The family will receive friends at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Thursday, May 12th, 2016 from 2 – 4 p.m and 7 – 9 p.m. Cremation has taken place, and at Dorothy’s request there will be no memorial service but she asked that you raise a glass in her memory. In lieu of flowers, donations in Dorothy’s name may be made to celebrate her love of “walking the trail” to the Quidi Vidi / Rennie’s River Development Foundation (5 Nagel’s Place, St. John’s, NL, A1B 2Z2).

WOOLGAR, Douglas Roy

Passed away suddenly in St. Petersburg, Florida on April 24, 2016. Douglas Roy Woolgar, aged 79 years. Predeceased by son Glenn, daughter Karen, parents Albert and Evelyn, brother David. Leaving to mourn with loving memories are wife Connie; brothers: Al (Lenora), Ed (Patricia), Bill (Lorraine), George (Lynne); sisters: Evelyn Bradbury (Buster), Eileen Rowley (Milton deceased); brothers in law Alan (Wanda), Terry (deceased), Gary, Mac (Anne), Marshal (Kitty); sister in law Michelle (Lucy), and Sandra Taskovics; as well as aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and a wide circle of other family and friends. Thanks are extended to special friends Gene and Pauline Lemay and niece Sherri Debruign. Doug was a teacher for over 30 years, a member of the CLB Band, and an inductee of the St. John’s Baseball Hall of Fame. Visitation will take place at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road on Friday, May 13th from 2 – 4 p.m. and 7 - 9 p.m. The funeral will be held on Saturday May 14th, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. from St. Michael’s and All Angels Church, 75 Kiwanis Street. Internment will follow at the Anglican Cemetery, Forest Road. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Children’s Wish Foundation or a charity of one’s choice.

Greening, George "Edison"

Passed peacefully away at the Leonard Miller Palliative Care Unit, with his loving family by his side, George Edison Greening, on May 10, 2016 aged 84 years. Predeceased by his parents Garland and Myra; brothers-in-law Clem Yetman and Reg Marshall; niece Sherri Dawn Yetman; nephew Dean Marshall; and members of the Duggan Family who have passed previously as well. Leaving to mourn his loving wife of 32 years Maud (Duggan);His children, Beverley Verville (Jacques), David, Verna Harvey (Richard), Gail McGrath (Mark), Heather, and Bruce. Edison leaves behind 7 grandchildren; Cheryll Lee and Jacques Verville, Carolyn, Susan and Richard Harvey, Curtis McGrath and Alexis Johnson, and her father Darroch. Also Leaving behind his 10 greatgrandchildren; Mercedes, Tony, Sophia, Nathan, Zachary, Liam, Ryan, Meghan, Nell, and Merry. Edison is survived by his two sisters Dora Yetman and her children Carol, Gerry and Paul, and Lilly Marshall and her children Derek and Randy. Also mourning his loss are members of the Duggan family, nieces and nephews of his wife Maud, Maud’s sister Catherine and her brother Phonse, as well as a large circle of extended family and friends. Edison was born in Musgravetown, in Bonavista Bay on September 30th, 1931. He moved to St. John’s where he worked at the Waterford Hospital, and then as a fireman with the Fort Pepperall Fire Station. Dad was an avid hunter, loved the outdoors and was a skilled carpenter. He was also known for his accordion playing, but his greatest enjoyment was tending to his flowers and greenhouse. He instilled in all of his children a love in gardening, and we will feel his presence when we work in our own gardens. We will always miss you. Cremation has taken place. The family will receive visitors at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road on Thursday, May 12th, 2016 from 2 p.m – 9 p.m. A service will be held in The Carnell Memorial Chapel on Friday, May 13th, 2016 at 2 p.m. A private inurnment to follow on Saturday May 14th, 2016 at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Flowers graciously accepted, or donations in “Edison’s” memory may be made to the School Lunch Association.

Ross, Marguerite Florence

Marguerite Florence Ross (nee Ring)- Passed peacefully away at her home on Thursday 12th May, Marguerite Florence Ross (nee Ring) in her 90th year. Predeceased by her husband Joseph (Bud), and son Andrew. Leaving to mourn daughter Mary Elizabeth Ross-Heazlewood (Chris, ) sons Joseph and Geoffrey, sister Mary, grand-sons Joseph, Evan, and Angus Heazlewood, and numerous family members and friends. Cremation has taken place. There will be a visitation at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Sunday 15th May from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday 17th May at St. Pius X Church. Inurnment will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Gathering Place.

Wermuth, Evelyn (nee Ash)

Wermuth, Evelyn (nee Ash) 1922-2016 Entered into eternal rest, on Thursday, May 12th, 2016 at Pleasantview Towers, Pleasantville, Evelyn Wermuth, age 93 years. Predeceased by husband Dr. Eric Wermuth. Leaving to celebrate her life are her beloved sister, Ruth Thomas; her niece Glenda Dempson (Brian); her nephew Rev. Derek Thomas (Rev. Nellie), Happy Valley; grand niece Paula Michelin (Jerry) and their children Hayden and Galilea; also Eric’s son Dr. Ralph Wermuth, California. Special thank-you to the outstanding staff at 2 North West, Pleasantview Towers for all their loving care extended to Evelyn. Cremation has taken place. There will be visitation at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road on Monday May 16th, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will take place on Tuesday May 17th, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. from the Carnell Memorial Chapel. Inurnment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Harding, Alexander (Alex) Clarke

Harding, Alexander (Alex) Clarke – Passed peacefully away on Thursday May 12th, 2016 at Chancellor Park, Alex Harding of St. Philips, in his 93rd year. Leaving to mourn his loving wife 58 years, Phoebe (Tucker); his son Alex Jr.; two grandsons: Stephen and Ian; their mother Roxanne Rogers; sister-in-law Sadie Rose; also many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Special thank you to the staff of 3rd Floor West at Chancellor Park for their care and support that was shown to Alex during his stay there. Cremation has taken place at Alex’s request. There will be service of committal at the Columbarium at the Anglican Cemetery, Kenmount Road on Tuesday May 17th, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made St. Augustine’s Anglican Church.

Thompson, Elizabeth Agnes (nee Murphy)

THOMPSON, ELIZABETH AGNES (Nee Murphy)- Passed peacefully away at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital on Friday, May 13, 2016 Elizabeth Agnes Thompson, aged 93 years. Predeceased by her husband Cyril (Cid) Thomas Thompson. Leaving to mourn 6 children Janet Duff (Alex), David (Lisa), Louise Cook (Gerry), Paul (Pam), Grace Thompson-Winter, Elizabeth Thompson (James Barton) and sister Joan Lacey of St. John’s. She will be lovingly missed by her 15 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren who all held a special place in her heart. Resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, St. John’s on Tuesday, May 17th, 2016 with visitation from 10 a.m. to 12 noon followed by a funeral service at the Carnell Memorial Chapel. After the service, a reception will be held at Tiffany Village. Donations in her memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
