NELSON CUMBY
Sept. 7th, 1928 - Oct. 10th, 2007

Howley, NL - It is with great sadness that the family of the late Nelson Cumby announce his passing on Wednesday, October 10th, 2007 at the Western Memorial Regional Hospital in his 79th year. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife Joyce (nee Reid); his children: Nelson Jr. (Donna), Lloyd (Alvena), Gladys (Bruce), Rick (Beverly), Jim (Ruby) and Brenda (Karl); 14 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; two daughters-in-law Marilyn Cumby and Claudette Reid Ellis; one brother Harold and one sister Ethel. Also a large circle of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his sons Wayne and Wilson, step-son Gary Reid, daughter-in-law Sandra, parents Lemuel and Sarah, brothers Stanley, Arthur, Maxwell and Orestus and sister Gladys. Visitation will take place from the United Church in Howley today, Thursday where also the funeral service will take place from on Friday at 2:00 p.m. with Maj. Linsey Oxford officiating with the interment to follow at the family plot in Howley. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Parsons Funeral Home, 63 Northmain Street, Deer Lake.

ALLAN JAMES “SPUDS” MacDONALD

Corner Brook, NL - It is with great sadness that the family of the late Allan James "Spuds" MacDonald announce his passing on Wednesday, October 10th, 2007 at his family residence at the age of 80 years. He leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories his wife Viola (nee Bradbury) of 55 years; 5 children: Joe (Joy) MacDonald, Deer Lake, Bob (Aggie) MacDonald, Ottawa, Kathy (Gerald) Hutchings, Corner Brook, Jeanette (Terry) Blake, Corner Brook and Bill MacDonald ( Lisa ), Corner Brook; 11 grandchildren: Jamie (Connie), Janesta-Jo, Kelly (Gerald), Jonathan, Angela, Stephen (Mandy), Michael, Jessica, Brandon, Mark and Kristopher, 4 great-grandchildren: Destiny, Melissa, Ashton and Jared, special sister and brother-in-law Ann and Max Hale. Together with a large circle of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Friends may visit Fillatre’s Funeral Home, 4 St. Mark’s Avenue on Friday from the hours of 2-4 & 7-9 PM. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 13th at 2:00 PM from the Salvation Army Temple, O’Connell Drive with Majors Ron and Joyce Stuckless officiating. Interment to follow at Mount Patricia Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy in lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Salvation Army Temple.

Mary Ellen “Helen” Abbott (nee Fitzgerald)
1916 - 2007

Mary Ellen “Helen” Abbott (nee Fitzgerald) 1916 – 2007, passed away peacefully in her 92nd year at the Veteran’s Memorial Building, Halifax on July 10, 2007. Predeceased by her husband, Albert Joseph Abbott of Port-au-Port, Newfoundland (1985). Born in Halifax, daughter of Michael Daniel and Jerome Agnes Fitzgerald (nee Woodill); cherished sister of Jean Frances Spencer (George) of Chester, Nova Scotia. Helen was a graduate of the Sacred Heart School, Halifax and the Royal Victoria School of Nursing, Montreal. She enlisted in the Canadian Army and saw World War Two service overseas as a Nursing Sister. With her military husband, there were numerous postings in Canada and overseas which fostered many lifelong colleagues and friends. On retirement, they returned to Port-au-Port, Newfoundland to help run the family business. Helen returned to Halifax in 1990. Helen expressed herself with her artistic talents, which included painting, knitting, and needle point. Helen was a Lady in the truest sense. Her quiet strength and support through adversity was an inspiration to friends and family, including her many loving nieces/grandnieces and nephews/ grandnephews. Helen’s family thanks the professional staff who worked on Floor V4E over the years, for their dedication and compassion, and the staff of the Veteran’s Memorial Building, Halifax, who very much made the Veteran’s Memorial Building Helen’s home. A memorial service to celebrate Helen’s life will be held 2 p.m. Friday, July 13, 2007 at the Veteran’s Memorial Building Chapel, Halifax followed by a reception. Father Michael Walsh to officiate. Interment to take place at a later date in Port-au-Port Newfoundland. In memory of Helen, donations may be made either to the Salvation Army, 2044 Gottingen Street, Halifax, NS B3K 3A9 (902) 422-2363 or to the QEII Foundation, 1278 Tower Road, Centennial Building, Rm 1-040 Halifax, NS B3H 2Y9 (902) 473-7932 or Toll Free: 1-888-428-0220. Cremation has taken place and arrangements are entrusted to J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor Street, Halifax.

Melvin “Roy” Noseworthy

Corner Brook, NL - It is with great sadness that the family of the late Roy Noseworthy announces his passing at Western Memorial Regional Hospital on Wednesday, July 11, 2007 at the age of 75 years. He leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories, his wife, Gertrude; son, Reginald; sister, Marilyn Clarke (Robert); cousins: Peggy Jacobs, Bessie Reid, Robert Shears (Sadie), Elizabeth Crocker (Freeman), Vera Froude (Mel), Jerry Dawe, Ed Dawe, and Butch Dawe; sisters-in-law: Elsie Hewitt (Clyde) and Evangeline Pollett; brother-in-law, Clyde Reid; nieces: Carol Griffin (Arthur), Margaret Hewitt, Rennie Pollett, Glynis McGibbon (Alan) and Lisa Pollett (Robert); very special niece, Gwen Pollett; special friend, Joyce Sutton; aunts: Millie Goosney and Eva Gillingham; and a large circle of other relatives and friends. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at Country Haven Funeral Home, 167 Country Road on Friday, July 13, 2007 from 7-9 p.m. from where the funeral service will take place on Saturday, July 14, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. with Major Stuckless officiating. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

ALAN DUFFY
(Formerly of Port au Port East)

Mississauga, ON - It is with great sadness that the family of the late Alan Duffy announce his passing at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, ON on Wednesday, April 25, 2007, at the age of 61 years. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Hilda and his daughters: Maureen (Jeff) and Stephanie (Brian) of Toronto. Also leaving to mourn six brothers: Tom (Stella), Roderick (Lorraine), Dominic (Joan), Jack (Loretta), Rick (Marilyn), Paul (Linda) and eight sisters: Loretta (Percy) Benoit, Jeanette (John) Ornce, Stephenie Muller, Christine (Jack) Pruitte, Elaine (Wayne) White, Linda (Bill) Alexander, Paulette (Gary) Wilcott, Joanne (Wayne) Howlett and 44 nieces and nephews. Also sadly missed by the Hynes Family, a large circle of friends and relatives and close family friend, Kenny Hynes. He was predeceased by his parents, Jean and Rory Duffy, his parents-in-law, Francis and Gloria Hynes, his brother Danny Duffy and his sister Margaret White. Friends may visit Maria Regina Church on Friday, May 4th, from 7-9 p.m. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, May 5th, at 2 p.m. from Maria Regina Parish in Port au Port East with interment in the Roman Catholic Cemetery in Port au Port East. As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Trauma Unit of St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, ON would be greatly appreciated.

FLORENCE ANN SULLIVAN (nee COLOMBE)
August 7, 1933 - May 2, 2007

St. George’s - It is with great sadness that the family of the late Florence Ann Sullivan announce her passing at the Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital, Stephenville on Wednesday, May 2, 2007 at the age of 74 years. Lovingly remembered by her husband, Nathan and her children: Sharon (Brendan) of Stephenville, Vicki (Reuben) of St. Bride’s, Marsha of Fort McMurray, Alberta, Cecilia of Brookfield, Nova Scotia, Danny (Agnes) of Codroy Valley and Jimmy (Melissa) of St. George’s, one brother, Peter (Eleanor) Colombe of St. George’s, two sisters: Alice (George) Baker of Shallop Cove, Adeline Butt of St. George’s, 13 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and a large circle of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her parents, Peter and Florence Colombe, brothers, Edmund, Gilbert, Frank, Leo, Leslie, Stephen and sisters, Monica, Delorosa, Angela and son-in-law, John Saunders. Cremation has taken place at Russell’s Crematorium, Stephenville. Friends may call at St. Joseph’s Parish, St. George’s on Thursday from 7-9 p.m. Funeral Service will take place on Friday, May 4th at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Parish, St. George’s. Interment will take place at a later date at the Roman Catholic Cemetery in Shallop Cove. As expressions of sympathy, flowers are graciously accepted or donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be greatly appreciated. Funeral arrangements are under the supervision of Russell’s Funeral Home & Crematorium.

GARRETT H. ALYWARD

It is with great sadness that the family of the late Garrett Alyward announces his passing at the Palliative Care Unit, Western Memorial Regional Hospital on Tuesday, May 2, 2007 at the age of 67 years. He leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories, brother, Carl (Susan) Alyward, and family, with whom he resided; sister, Janice Montroy of Surrey, BC; good friend, Stanley Vincent; forever friend, Molly; sister-in-law, Alice Alyward of Fort McMurray, AB; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by his extended family, Judy (Jody), Barry (Dawn), Wanda (Duane), Colleen (Scott), Carla (Kevin), Laura (Ian), Maria (Brian) and Peter. He was predeceased by his mother, Jessie Webb; father, Peter Alyward; stepfather, Pius Webb; and brothers: Henry Alyward and Bernard Alyward. Visitation will be held at Country Haven Funeral Home, 167 Country Road, on Thursday, May 3, 2007 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. from where the funeral service will take place on Friday, May 4, 2007 with Pastor Osmond officiating. Interment at Mount Patricia Cemetery.

NELLIE MARIE OSMOND (nee WOODROW)

Pasadena, NL - Passed peacefully away after a brief illness Monday, April 30th, 2007 at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital, Nellie Osmond, age 67. Predeceased by parents: Patrick and Marguerita Woodrow and sister Carmel Norris (Dan). Leaving to mourn her love of 40 years Monty, sons: Derek (Lori), Keith (Michelle); daughter: Janine (Stephen); cherished grandchildren: Paige and Connor, sister Patsy Quinlan (Don); brothers: Ed (Helen) and Tom (Mary), sisters-in-law: Marjorie Budgell (Hubert), Marie King (Bill), Doreen Andrews (Gord), Betty Ball (Don), Dorothy Reid (Don) and brother-in-law Ford Osmond (Salome); special nieces and nephew: Michelle (Jim) and Nellie’s "other grandchildren" Claire, Maggie, Emily, and Patrick, Valda (Dave), Carl (Jane), Andrea (Peter) and a large circle of relatives and friends. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Fillatre’s Funeral Home, Corner Brook with visitation at Holy Rosary Pastoral Centre, Pasadena on Thursday and Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Mass to be held at Holy Rosary Parish Saturday May 5th, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. with Father Gordon Grace officiating. No flowers by request. Donations in Nellie’s memory may be made to Holy Rosary Parish or to a Library of your choice.
