Dr. John Ashton
1952-2008
Corner Brook, NL - With much sadness we announce that Dr. John Ashton died quietly at home with his family by his side on Saturday September 20, 2008. He will be loved as long as we live: His wife, Sheila, his son Darby, his parents John and Dorothy Ashton, his siblings: Chris (Elaine), Ray (Susan), Terry (Angela), Kathleen (Jamal), Philip (Leslie), Maria (Tim), Martin (Siobhan) and his siblings-in-law: Richard (Nancy), Kevin (Lorrie), Frank (Lil), Barry (Heather), Dean, Colleen (Barry), Anne (Glenn), Chris (Kim) and Jason (Andrea) and father-in-law Allan (Margaret) Saunders. He will be missed by a loving circle of nieces and nephews, other relatives and numerous friends across Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, Ireland and the United Kingdom. John was born in Barnsley, Yorkshire, England on October 7, 1952. He came to study at Memorial University in 1975 and chose to make Newfoundland his home. John was not only a pivotal figure in the evolution of Grenfell College towards maturity, but an internationally recognized prize-winning scholar in his chosen field of Folklore. Visitation will take place at Fillatre’s Funeral Home, 4 St. Mark’s Avenue on Monday and Tuesday from the hours of 2-4 & 7-9 pm. The funeral service will be held at 10:30 am on Wednesday September 24 at the Cathedral of the Most Holy Redeemer. Reception to follow at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College at 1:45pm in the Atrium of the Fine Arts Building. In lieu of flowers, friends are invited to donate to The John Ashton Scholarship to be established shortly at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College. Donations can be pledged at Fillatre’s Funeral Home or through the office of the Principal at 637-6231.

August 29th, 1917 - September 19th, 2008
Pasadena, NL - It is with great sadness that the family of the late Michael Christopher Moss announce his passing on Friday, September 19th, 2008 at the Palliative Care Unit of Western Memorial Regional Hospital, Corner Brook in his 91st year. He leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories his wife of 62 years Priscilla (nee Warren), Pasadena; daughter Faye (Terry) Anderson, Moline, Illinois, USA; son Robert (Joy) Moss, Deer Lake; grandson Keith (Cheryl), Oak Harbour, Washington, USA; Granddaughter Amanda (Spencer), Montreal, Quebec, great-grandson Trysten, Oak Harbour, Washington, USA; sisters: Jessie House, Rocky Harbour, Freda Guinchard and Hazel Eisan both of Deer Lake; special mention to Victoria Dyke, Stephenville. As well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his parents George and Dorcas Moss and numerous brothers and sisters. A memorial service will be held on Monday, September 22nd at 2:00 PM from St. David of Wales Anglican Church, Pasadena with Rev. Canon David Pearce and Rev. Edmund Laldin officiating, followed by the interment at St. David’s Anglican Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy in lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Palliative Care Unit of Western Memorial Regional Hospital. McKay’s, NL - It is with great sadness that the family of the late Ellis P. Hulan announce his passing on Thursday, September 11th, 2008 at the Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital in Stephenville at the age of 89 years. He was predeceased by his wife Martha, June 12th, 1992 He leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories his children: Julia (John) Shears, Stephenville, Rendell (Linda) Hulan, Grand Falls-Windsor and Barton (Bernice) Hulan, Brantford, Ont; grandchildren: Stephanie Hulan (Jason Sauernheimer), Roger Shears (Serena Petrella), Stevan Hulan (Sandra), Bradley Hulan (Tracy) and Jamie Hulan (Indrani), great-grandchildren: Shawn, Jonathon, Aidan, Blaize, Jessica, Evan and Samuel, very special friend Elva Hulan, brothers: James (Margaret), Jerry (Mary) and George (Roma), sisters: Vivian Brake, Elvina Hewlin, Ruby Gilliam, Pearl (Gordon) Hulan and Una (Donald) Gilliam, sisters-in-law: Ruby Hulan and Una Hulan. As well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his parents Jermiah and Ellen and brother Rodney. Among the things Ellis cherished most in life were his family, friends, his community of McKay’s and good music for a dance. Special thank-you to staff at the Dialysis Units at both Stephenville and Corner Brook Hospitals. Shallop Cove, NL - It is with great sadness that the family of the late Samuel Joseph Colombe announce his passing on Friday, September 12th, 2008 at the Sir Thomas Rodderick Hospital in Stephenville at the age of 86 years. He was predeceased by his parents Joseph and Florence, brothers Fred, Frank and Darrell, sisters Francis Cormier, Dorothy Cross and Priscilla May. He was predeceased by his wife Mary Pennell, October 11th, 2007. He will be terribly missed by his children: Amanda (Larry), Rosalind (George), Vera (Mike), Dianne (Donald), Donna (Paul), Randy (Cathy), David (Debbie); grandchildren: Mark, Sherri Lynn, Amanda, Jason, Natasha, Lauren and Stephen; great granddaughter Morgan, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Corner Brook, NL - It is with extreme shock that the family of the late Phonse Noseworthy announce his sudden passing on Saturday, September 6th, 2008 at his most loved location “his cabin”, at the early age of 56. Leaving to mourn his wonderful wife of 35 years, Shirley (nee Pike); his daughter which was and always will be Daddy’s little girl, Mary Lou LeRoy; his son-in-law and one of his greatest buddies, Gord LeRoy, and his three precious beautiful grandsons - the reason for him always enjoying life to the fullest, Brian, Nathan and Christopher; brothers and sisters: Joseph (Lu), Bernard (Delilah), Carl (Jean), Kevin, Paul (Rose), Betty (Glen) Churchill, Nathan, Michael (Darlene); brothers and sisters-in-law: Christine (Walter) Barry, Isabelle (Ed) Carroll, Paul (Marg) Pike, Ken (Lorna) Pike, John Pike, Denise (Tim) Hussey, Loretta (Kevin) Payne, Cathy (Rick) Park, Deanna (Ray) Sanson, Larry (Darlene) Pike and Eugene (Tracey) Pike. Predeceased by his parents Nathan Noseworthy, October 25, 2006 and Elizabeth Noseworthy on April 25, 2008, his little sister Mary Philomena Noseworthy; grandparents of whom he adored: John and Ann Canning; his special aunt Annie Canning; his parents-in-law: John Michael and Veronica Pike whom he adored; left to morn with fond and loving memories are his nieces, nephews and cousins of which there are too many to name as each of them have touched his life in special ways and were adored by him . His friends, which the number is too great to even begin to list; his life-long friends were: Rod (Sharon) Wheeler, Rick (Louise) Brake, Ben (Gloria) Wells; two exceptional couples that warmed his heart in such a short friendship, Chris (Bernice) Anderson and Ross (Emma) Janes. His love was of the rarest kind, he was the most friendly, loving, compassionate man with the biggest heart of gold to be found in one extremely wonderful person. He was an honest and true friend to all that knew him or touched his life in any way. Visitation will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday from the hours of 2-4 and 7-9:00 p.m. from Fillatre’s Funeral Home, 218 Curling Street. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, September 11th at 2:00 p.m from Sacred Heart Parish. Father Bernard Buckle officiating. Cremation to follow at Humber Valley Crematorium . Burial of the Urn will be held on Friday, September 12th at 11:00 a.m. at Mt. Patricia Cemetery.
