MARY ANN BALL (nee Curlew)
February 4th 1915 … May 25, 2010

Deer Lake, NL - Passed peacefully away in the presence of her family at her home in Deer Lake Mary Ann Ball, on Tuesday May 25th, 2010 at the age of 95. She leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories her daughter: Clarice (Reuben) Critch, daughter in law Delphine Ball, 12 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, 6 great great grandchildren, brothers: Raymond (Irene) Curlew, Reidsville, Calvin (Dorothy) Deer Lake, Winston, Deer Lake, Harry (Barbara), Deer Lake, Douglas (Gladys) B.C, Donald, Ontario, sisters: Sadie Shears, Port aux Basques, Renee Dinney, Deer Lake and sister in law Joan Curlew, Deer Lake as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her husband Lawrence, son Calvin, daughter Doris, brothers: James, Harold, Roy, sisters: Bertha, May, Pearl and her parents James and Emma Curlew. Friends may visit Fillatre’s Funeral Home, 10 Clinic Drive, Deer Lake on Wednesday from the hours of 3-5 & 7-9 PM, The Funeral service will be held on Thursday May 27th at 2:00 PM from the Salvation Army Church with Majors Wayne and Betty Ann Pike officiating. Interment to follow at the Salvation Army Cemetery, High Street. As expressions of sympathy flowers graciously accepted or donations may be made to the Western Memorial Hospital Foundation, Kidney Department.

St. Jude’s, NL - It is with great sadness that the family of the late Malcolm Cassell announce his passing on Saturday, May 22, 2010 at the Western Memorial Regional Hospital, Corner Brook at the age of 88 years. He leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories his children: Malcolm Baker, Shirley Knowls (Dave), Gary Cassell (Velda), Ida Tourout, Iris Marcotte (Allan Eriksson), Golda Cassell, Donna Cassell (Glen Anstey), Glenn Cassell (Donna), Glenda Earl (Bill), Susan White (Gary), Christopher Cassell and Gina Knap (Rick), numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; special friends Lucinda and Joan George; as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his wife Doris Cassell (nee Baker), parents Joseph and Lucy Cassell, sister Melina and brother Andrew. Friends may visit Fillatre’s Funeral Home, 10 Clinic Drive, Deer Lake on Tuesday from the hours of 2-4 & 7-9 PM from where the funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 26 at 1:00 PM. Interment to follow at Deer Lake Interdenominational Cemetery, Wight’s Road. As expressions of sympathy flowers graciously accepted or donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

MAINLAND, NL - Passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family at her family home in Mainland, NL, Alfreda Lainey on Saturday, May 22, 2010 at the age of 78 years. She leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories her husband John Baptiste Lainey; her children: Michael Lainey, Theresa Young, Ellis Lainey, Gerarld Lainey, Marina Lainey, Ann Rouzes, Catherine LeCointre, Robert Lainey, Majella Lainey, Bernard Lainey, Delores Green, John Lainey Jr., Verna Lainey; 24 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-granchild; brothers: Kevin Hall, Angus Hall; sisters: Perpetua March, Mary Dennis, Leila Duborgois, Berthina White as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her parents Patrick and Ann Hall; daughters Mary and Phyllis Lainey; sisters: Rita Rouzes, Isabelle Ryan, Theresa Jesso; brothers: Howard Hall, Hugh Hall, Michael Hall, and Joseph Hall. Visitation will take place at St. Ann’s Chapel, Mainland on Sunday from 2 - 9 p.m. and Monday beginning at 2 p.m. from where the funeral service will take place on Tuesday, May 25, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. with Father Terry Boland officiating. Interment will follow in the Roman Catholic Cemetery, Mainland. As expressions of sympathy flowers are graciously accepted. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Fillatre’s Funeral Home, Stephenville Crossing.

LAWRENCE JACOB “JAKE” CROCKER

Corner Brook, NL - It is with great sadness that the family of the late Jake Crocker announces his passing on Saturday, May 8th, 2010 at the Western Memorial Regional Hospital at the age of 80 years. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories are his wife: Theresa (nee Ducey); daughter: Joanne (Greg) Collins; two grandsons: Joseph and Mark; sisters: Marilyn Avery and Vernetta McKenna; brothers: Ingram (Emma), Aubrey and David (Sheila); sister-in-law: Lizeta Fitzpatrick and brother-in-law: James Ducey (Ailsa); as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his parents: Andrew and Laura and brother, Leonard. Cremation has taken place at Humber Valley Crematorium. Friends may visit Fillatre’s Funeral Home, 4 St. Marks Avenue on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9:00 p.m. The funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, May 11th at 10:30 a.m. from the Cathedral of the Most Holy Redeemer, Mt. Bernard Avenue followed by interment at Mt. Patricia Cemetery, Father Ambrose Hynes officiating. As expressions of sympathy, flowers are graciously accepted or donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

NEIL, Gerald (Gerry) Roy CD

It is with great sadness that the family of the late Gerald Neil (formerly of Corner Brook), announce his sudden passing at the Halifax Infirmary, Wednesday, October 19th, 2005 at the age of 47 years. He leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories, his wife, Eileen (Young), (formerly of Cape St. George); son Michael, and daughters Laura and Wanda; his father, Llewellyn Neil and Stepmother Barbara; brothers: Wayne (Trudy), Corner Brook, Robert (Karen), Dartmouth; sisters: Evelyn (Ed) Russell, St. John's, Olive (Michael) Ledrew, Corner Brook; Beatrice (Larry) Noseworthy, Corner Brook; stepsisters: Faye (Jack) Otto, Palm Springs, Ferne Knight, Corner Brook and stepbrother, Joe (Zella) Battiste, North Bay, mother-in-law Cecilia Young, Beaver Bank; brothers-in-law: Hyacinth (Brenda) Young; Nathan and Thomas Young; sister-in-law, Lorraine Young (Bob Powers) all of New Brunswick. Loved and remembered, as well, by numerous nieces and nephews, special friends Margie and Boyd Payne (formerly from Rocky Harbour) now living in Sackville; and a large circle of relatives and friends. Gerald was predeceased by his brother, Derek and his mother, Vivian. Gerald joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1977 and completed 22 years of service including tours in Germany and Persian Gulf War. Upon completion of military service he was employed at Air Nova for the pass six years. Gerald was a devoted family man who enjoyed cooking, hunting, playing cards and darts. He was a gentle loving man who will be missed by all whose lives he touched. Donations on behalf of Gerald to a charity of one's choice and condolences can be on line at www.fillatre.ca. Visitation will be held at Fillatre's Funeral Home, St. Mark's Avenue, Corner Brook on Sunday (only) from 2-4 & 7-9 PM. Funeral service will take place on Monday, October 24th at 2:00 PM from All Saints Anglican Church, Clarence Street, Corner Brook, with Canon Derek Thomas officiating. Interment will be at the family plot in the Townsite Cemetery.

AUSTIN “KENT” MANUEL

Corner Brook, NL - It is with great sadness that the family of the late Austin Kent Manuel announce his peaceful passing at Western Memorial Regional Hospital on Thursday, April 29th, 2010 at the age of 81 years. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories : his wife of 56 years, Shirley (nee Noseworthy); his children: Ramona van Slyke (predeceased by husband Rick), of Collingwood, ON, Wanda Stratton (Brian) of Barrie, ON, Jean Black (Gary) of Sudbury, ON, Keith Manuel (Lynda) of Mineville, NS, and Wade Manuel (Amanda) of Milton, ON; grandchildren: Terri, Madison, Pamela, Megan, Ian, Karen, Adam, Erinn, Gregory, Sean and Anna; brother: Thomas Manuel (Fran), Connecticut, USA, as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Predeceased by his parents Obediah and Eda Minnie Manuel; his brother: Wallace and sisters: Beryl, Madeline and Hilda. Cremation has taken place at Humber Valley Crematorium. Corner Brook, NL - It is with great sadness that the family of the late Doug Alteen announce his passing on Thursday, April 29, 2010 at the Western Memorial Regional Hospital at the age of 85 years. Doug was a leader in the business community and well known and respected as a jeweler for over 60 years. He was a generous contributor to organizations and charities including: The Lions Club, Chamber of Commerce, Corner Brook Curling Club, Blomidon Country Club, Masonic (Lodge Lomond), and most notably, Charter member and Potentate of the Mazol Temple of the Shrine. He leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories his devoted wife, Shirley (nee Woodman); five children: Robert (Bob) Alteen (Janice Higgins), Corner Brook, Glenn Alteen, Vancouver, BC, Peter Alteen (Kathy Alexander), St. John’s, Donna Alteen (Tasso Dikaios), Halifax, NS, and Doug Alteen Jr. (Brenda ), Ottawa, ON; grandfather to : Katerina and Elena Dikaios (Donna), Susan and Clare Alteen (Peter) and Sydney and Renee Alteen (Doug Jr.); sister: Muriel Michael, Charlottetown, PE; brothers: Fred Alteen, Corner Brook, Lawrence Alteen, Bedford, NS and Louis Alteen, Corner Brook; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his parents: Sophie and Louis Alteen; sisters: Viola Salhaney and Lillian Ritza; brothers: Waldo Alteen and Nick Alteen. Visitation will be held on Friday, 7-9:00 p.m. and Saturday, 2-4 and 7-9:00 p.m. from Fillatre’s Funeral Home, 4 St. Marks Avenue. The funeral service will be held on Monday, May 3rd at 11:00 A.M. from the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, Main Street, Rev. Michael Rice officiating. WILLIAM “BILL” ALOYISIUS BARRY
June 16, 1941 - April 24, 2010

Corner Brook, NL - It is with great sadness that the family of William Aloyisius “Bill” Barry announce his sudden passing at his residence in Corner Brook on Saturday, April 24, 2010 at the age of 68 years. Left to mourn are his children: Michael (Trudy) of Port Saunders, Keith (Patti) of Quispamsis, New Brunswick and Joanne (Edward) of Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia; grandchildren: Adam, Justin, Jeremy and Kendra, sister Doreen (David); niece Lori-Lynn; cousins: Georgine Schneider (Joe) and Isabelle Barry; special friends Denise and Larry Jones and Ken Simms, dad also leaves a circle of family and friends including his roommates, especially Jack Wheaton. Dad was predeceased by his parents Thomas and Ann (Nee Piercey). Friends may visit Fillatre’s Funeral Home, 218 Curling Street on Monday 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. from where the funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 27 at 10:30 a.m. with Monsignor Edwin Gale officiating. Interment to follow at Mount Patricia Cemetery.
