Alva Rowena (nee Crocker) VARDY
December 3, 1929 - March 10, 2010

(Formerly of Trout River) - It is with great sadness that the family of the late Alva Rowena Vardy announce her passing on Wednesday, March 10th, 2010 at Western Memorial Regional Hospital in Corner Brook, at the age of 80 years. She was predeceased by parents Lionel and Whilemena Crocker; husband Garland; sister-in-law Patricia Watton; brother-in-law James Shirley McLean. Leaving to mourn with wonderful memories sons: Brian (Heather) and Paul (Muriel); treasured grandchildren Kyle, Kathryn, Matthew and Nicholas; sisters: Lola McLean and Genova Gilbert (Max); sisters-in-law: Phyllis Gilliam and Alva Vardy; brothers-in-law: Tom Gilliam, Bob Watton and John Vardy; 7 nieces; 5 nephews, as well as a large circle of friends. Friends may visit Fillatre’s Funeral Home, 218 Curling St. on Friday and Saturday between the hours of 2-4 & 7-9 pm. The Funeral Service will take place at St. Mary’s Anglican Church in Curling on Sunday, March 14th at 2:00 pm. Reverend Edmund Laldin officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Patricia Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made to St. Mary’s Anglican Church.

LUCY ANNE WHELAN (NEE Casey)
August 14, 1917 … February 27, 2010

Corner Brook, NL - It is with great sadness that the family of the late Lucy Whelan announce her passing at the Interfaith Home for Seniors on Saturday, February 27, 2010 at the age of 92 years. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories are her three sons: Regis (Mary), Gerry and Sean; sisters: Maude, Florida, Kay, Toronto; brother: Jack, Pasadena; as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her husband, William; sister: Nellie and brothers, Bern, Cliff and Vince. Friends may visit Fillatre’s Funeral Home, 218 Curling street on Sunday, 7-9:00 p.m. and Monday, 2-4 and 7-9:00 p.m. The Mass of Christian burial will be held on Tuesday, March 2nd, at 10:30 A.M. from Sacred Heart Parish, Curling. Father Bernard Buckle officiating. Interment to follow at Mt. Cecilia cemetery, Curling. As expressions of sympathy, in lieu of flowers donations may be made to Daffodil Place or the charity of one’s choice.

CLYDE S. MELENDY
Feb. 13, 1941 … Feb. 15, 2010

Corner Brook, NL - After a courageous battle with ALS, Clyde Melendy passed away peacefully at his home, with his family by his side. He will be forever loved and remembered by his wife, Goldie, of 47 years, daughter: Michelle (Earle Dalley), cherished grandson: Jacob Cluney; step-granddaughters: Amanda and Nicole Dalley; his siblings: Harold (Bride), Eva (Bernard Mills), Gordon, Port Stanley, ON., Joan (Herb McDonald); sisters-in-law: Juanita Hancock (Wayne), Sudbury, ON., Louise Canning (Terry), Flin Flon, MB, Sybil Hancock, Ottawa, ON., Della Nicholson (Michael), California, Sharon Starkes, Ottawa, ON. Kimberly Hancock (Terry Samson), Gander; his long time care giver, Leah; and care givers: Penney, Don and Karen; as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Clyde was predeceased by his son: Barry; parents: Maxwell and Irene Melendy; father and mother-in-law: Jacob and Beulah Hancock; brother-in-law: Sterling Starkes and niece Linda. Visitation will take place at Fillatre’s Funeral Home, St. Marks Avenue on Tuesday, 7-9:00 p.m. and Wednesday, 2-4 and 7-9:00 p.m. Funeral service will take place 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 18th at the First United Church, Park Street, Reverend Kathy Brett officiating, assisted by Reverend Clayton Parsons and Reverend Pat Melindy. Interment to follow at a later date. As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made to the ALS Society, Corner Brook Branch, Humber United Church Memorial Fund or to the Charity of one’s choice.

Dorothy Cole
1982-2010

It is with great sadness that the family of the late Dorothy (Joy) Cole announce her passing on Thursday, January 14th, 2010 at the Moncton City Hospital at the age of 27 years. She will sadly missed by her husband Darren Cole; children: Corey & Sarah Everard; step-son Brian; mother Leah Joy; sister Regina Obed; brothers: Richard (Holly), Michael, Bernard and Justin, as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her father Lawrence Joy. Friends may visit Fillatre's Funeral Home, Happy Valley Goose Bay on Thursday, January 21st between the hours of 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. The Funeral Service will be held on Friday, January 22nd at 2:00 p.m. from the Pentecostal Tabernacle, interment following at the Moravian Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dorothy Cole Donation Account.

GLADYS MILDRED LOUISE COSTELLA
1933-2010

Corner Brook, NL - It is with great sadness that the family of the late Gladys Mildred Louise Costella announce her passing on Tuesday, February 9th, 2010 at the Leonard A. Miller Centre, St. John’s at the age of 77 years. She leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories her son Billy McDowell and daughter Natalia Costella-Martin (Shawn); grandchildren: Kayla Costella, Cassandra McDowell, Tasha Martin, Hayley Martin, Arianna Sheppard, Cyan Martin, Madison McDowell, Gemma Martin and Kaitlyn Sheppard; sisters and brothers: Evelyn LaRonde (Merv), Maxwell Burton (Muriel), Mary White (Merril), Gloria Burton, Vicki Hayter (Larry) and Vance Burton (Sylvia), as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her parents Maxwell and Louise Burton and sister Mabel Burton. Friends may visit Fillatre’s Funeral Home, 4 St. Mark’s Avenue on Saturday and Sunday from the hours of 2-4 & 7-9 PM. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, February 16th at 2:00 PM from the First United Church, Park Street with Rev. Dr. Wayne Cole officiating. Interment to follow at Mount Patricia Cemetery. CORNER BROOK, NL - With his family by his side who loved him very much William Joseph Brothers passed peacefully away on Tuesday, February 2, 2010 at the Palliative Care Unit, Western Memorial Hospital in Corner Brook at the age of 77 years. He was predeceased by wife Mary of 51 years. He leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories special friend Grace Butler; six children: Joan Lewis (Don), Corner Brook, Maxine Lewis (Barry), Corner Brook, Bill Brothers (Khandi), Edmonton, Alberta, Annette Curson (Fred), Ottawa, Ontario, Glen Brothers (Marina), Halfway Point and Cherie Brothers, Calgary, Alberta. Nine precious grandchildren: Courtney Lewis, Jonathan, Jeffrey and Jason Lewis, Kayla and Alicia Brothers, Lucas Curson, Brianna and Braeden Brothers; brothers: Art, Long Harbour, Reg (Mabel), PEI, Ford, Fermuse and Gord (Cecilia), Long Harbour; sisters: Florence (Al), Hopper, Ontario, Gladys Ursy, Chicago, Anne (Max) Butler, St. John’s, Beth (Jack) Keating, St. John’s and Shirley (Gary) Hitchcock, Ontario; as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends especially his Brother Knights from Knights of Columbus. He was predeceased by his parents: Dora (1986) and Clifford (1987); brother: Lawrence, Long Harbour; sisters: Patricia Infante, Ontario, Marie Farrison, Ohio; brothers-in-law: Mario Infante, Ontario, Leo Ryan, Fermuse; sisters-in-law: Lucy Brothers, Long Harbour and Frances Brothers, Long Harbour. Friends may visit Fillatre’s Funeral Home, 4 St. Marks Avenue on Thursday and Friday from the hours of 2-4 and 7-9:00 p.m. The Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, February 6th at 10:30 AM from the Cathedral of the Most Holy Redeemer with Monsignor Edwin Gale officiating. Interment to follow at Mt. Patricia cemetery. As expressions of sympathy, flowers are graciously accepted or donations maybe made to the Canadian Cancer Society (Daffodil Place).

MARY O. LEITCH

Stephenville Crossing, NL - Mary O. Leitch of Stephenville Crossing died at Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital on Saturday, January 9th, 2010. She was the daughter of William and Isobel Leitch and was born in Corner Brook on September 17, 1927. She is predeceased by her sister Margaret Crowley and leaves one sister, Teresa Lafitte (Jim) of Stephenville. Cremation has taken place at Humber Valley Crematorium and a family memorial will be held at a future date. Arrangements have been entrusted to Fillatre’s Funeral Home, Stephenville Crossing.

Bertram Herbert “Bert” Blanchard

McIver’s, NL - It is with great sadness that the family of the late Bert Blanchard announce his sudden passing on Sunday, January 24th, 2010 at Western Memorial Regional Hospital at the age of 59 years. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories are his wife, Jocelyn; three children: Carol Ann (Derek Park), Brampton, ON, Lois (Dion Park), Cox’s Cove and Aaron (Nancy), Cambridge, ON; four grandchildren: Tyson, Nicholas, Natalie and Cooper; brother: Clyde (Vivian) Blanchard; special family: Joe (Fern) Blanchard, Mary White, Ada White and Judy (Charles) White; mother-in-law: Eva Ricketts; brothers and sisters-in-law: Murray (Gloria) Ricketts, Carrie (Bob) Stockley, Blanche (Landon) Payne, Mark (Cinette) Ricketts, Jamie (Linda) Ricketts and Jonathon (Krista) Ricketts; as well as a very large circle of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friend. He was predeceased by his mother and father: Annie and Russell Blanchard; special aunt and uncle: Edna and John T. Blanchard; special family, Kate Blanchard; father-in-law: Chesley Ricketts; sister-in-law: Dorcas Ricketts. Visitation will take place from The Epiphany Anglican Church, McIver’s all day Tuesday and Wednesday, from where the funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 28th, at 200 p.m. Reverend Joan Coles officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery. As expressions of sympathy, flowers are graciously accepted or donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
