While a student he performed in musical and theatrical productions, co-edited the fortnightly student paper, and edited the College’s official journal, The Rhodean. He joined the South African Army in 1942, was stationed in Egypt and Italy, married Hope Barrable in Cairo, and in 1946 returned to Johannesburg to work as journalist on The Star. He was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship, completed a degree in English at Wadham College, Oxford, UK and returned with his family to South Africa in 1950. He held faculty positions in English at Rhodes University, at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, and from 1962 to 1969 at the University of New England in Armidale, Australia. Throughout these years he combined his academic career with producing and performing in theatrical productions. In 1969 he joined the English Department at Memorial University, St. John’s, Newfoundland, where he contributed to the cultural life of the community: as chair of RCA board, adjudicator of Arts and Letters awards, member of the Library Association of NL, creator of school broadcasts, part-time actor for CBC and as engaged and discriminating audience for countless concerts, films, and plays. Throughout his life he traveled widely, whenever feasible taking in theatrical productions while visiting friends. He played squash regularly and competitively until a few years ago, when he turned instead to yoga, and remained a keen walker until the last day of his life. He had an eclectic taste in books and an intimate relationship with his library. He was a generous benefactor to many social, cultural, educational, environmental and political causes. Alan will be remembered for his wisdom, integrity, kindness, wit and precise, fastidious use of English. A celebration of his life will take place at the D. F. Cook Recital Hall, Memorial University, on Sunday, September 16 at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alan Hall Memorial Scholarship in Theatre and Music at Memorial University.
