MENCHIONS, Hilda Vera – June 22, 1918-Oct. 6, 2007. Passed peacefully away at St. Luke’s Home, Hilda Vera Menchions in the presence of her husband, at 89 years. Fondly remembered by her husband Rev. Clayton and sister Vivian Batten, sisters-in-law Susie Courage of Bonavista, Carrie Menchions, Clarke’s Beach, Sarah Menchions, Toronto, and by many former students. Visitation at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Rd. Sunday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. and Monday 10-12 noon. Funeral service from St. Augustine’s Anglican Church Monday Oct. 8 at 2 p.m. with interment to follow at the Anglican Cemetery, Kenmount Road. Flowers gratefully declined, gifts to St. Luke’s Home gratefully accepted. Thank you for your many prayers and caring.

MESH, Beatrice Alice (nee Bishop) – Passed peacefully away at the Health Sciences Complex on Monday, October 8, 2007. Beatrice Mesh aged 58 years. Predeceased by parents: Jack and Eleanor Bishop; sisters: Elizabeth, Marjorie and Rhoda; father-in-law: Norman Mesh. Leaving to mourn are her husband: Jack; daughters: Cindy (Art), Corinne and Christine (David); grandchildren: Danny, Brandon, Melissa, Tyler and Cameron; sisters: Doris Cross (Fred), Ena Spurrell (Barry), Sarah Gee (Bobby) and Joy Howell (Walt); brothers: Fred Bishop (Betty), Maurice Bishop (Rhina), Dermot Bishop and Aubrey Bishop (Judy); mother-in-law: Verna Mesh; brother-in-law: Calvert Mesh (Diane); sisters-in-law: Yvonne Marshall (Roy) and Betty Nagel (Steve), as well as nieces, nephews and many other relatives and friends. Resting at Barrett’s Funeral Home, 328 Hamilton Ave. on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9. Funeral service will be held at Barrett’s Chapel on Wednesday, October 10, 2007, at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at a later date. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations may be made in Beatrice’s memory to the Dr. H. Bliss Cancer Care Foundation.

MILLER, Edward – Passed away at his residence, after a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by his loving family, Edward Miller age 85 years. Leaving to mourn his loss, loving wife of 60 years Maisie, daughters Laverne (Hayward), Clara (Gerald), Deborah (Grenvil) and sons Charlie (Lynn), Cluney (Gail), Doug (Pam) . Survived by one brother and four sisters, one sister-in-law and two brothers-in-law. Also mourning his loss, 20 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Along with a large circle of relatives and friends. Resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Rd., Tuesday, October 9, 2 p.m.-9 p.m. and Wednesday, October 10 at 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Funeral service will take place at St. Lawrence Anglican Church, Portugal Cove, on October 11, 2007, at 2 p.m. Interment will follow at the Anglican Cemetery, Bauline Line. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations my be made CNIB in his loving memory.

REARDON, Mary Margaret – Passed peacefully away at the Health Science Centre on Oct. 6, 2007, Mary Reardon, aged 82 years. Predeceased by her husband Joseph (2001) and sister Janet. Leaving to mourn only son Joe, grandchildren Chris (Crystal), Jamie (Leanne), Ashley and J.R., one darling great-grandchild Kylie, as well as a large circle of other relatives and friends. At Mary’s request, cremation has taken place. Resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Rd. Visitation on Sunday and Monday from 2-4 and 7-9. Funeral service to take place on Tuesday at 11 a.m. from the Carnell Memorial Chapel with interment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations may be made to the Kidney Foundation.

SMITH, Rita Susannah (nee Button) – Passed peacefully away at her residence on Sunday, October 7, 2007, in the presence of her devoted family. Rita Smith aged 88 years. Predeceased by her loving husband: Chesley (1978); parents: Jacob and Susan Button; brothers: Clarence, Edgar and Ellis; sisters: Doris Button and Margaret Andrews; nieces: Ruth May, June Fairley and nephew: Lloyd Andrews. Leaving to mourn are her children: Sandra (Bob Francis), grandchildren Joanne and Jason, Truro, Nova Scotia, Judy (John Hayes), Wayne (Dianne), grandchildren Kimberley, Jonathan and Gregory, Mt. Pearl, Cynthia (Russell Upshall), grandchildren Krista and Ryan (Jenny Hillier) Salt Pond, Burin; sister-in-law: Emma Button, Betty Smith and Elizabeth Cranford. Special friends and caregivers Minnie, Marjorie, Wanda and Todd who saw it through to the end. As well as a large number of other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Resting at Barrett’s Funeral Home, 328 Hamilton Ave. on Monday from 7-9 p.m., Tuesday from 10-12 noon, 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. and on Wednesday from 10-12 noon. Funeral Services to be held at Barrett’s Chapel on Wednesday, October 10, 2007, at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations in her memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society or charity of one’s choice.

WHALEN, Elizabeth – Passed peacefully away in the arms of the angels at the Salvation Army Glenbrook Lodge surrounded by her loving family, including her Glenbrook Lodge family on Monday, October 8, 2007. Elizabeth Whalen aged 98 years. Predeceased by her husband: Richard; daughter: Josephine; sons: David and Douglas. Left to mourn are daughters: Virginia (Ed), Phyllis (Joe), Leah, Shirley and Marlene (Bernard); sons: Dean (Lori), Richard (Tina), Gerard (Ross) and Ken (Judy); special grandson: Rick; special care-giver Murray (whom she loved dearly), a large circle of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as many other relatives and friends. Resting at Barrett’s Funeral Home, 328 Hamilton Ave. on Tuesday and Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9. Funeral service will take place at Barrett’s Chapel on Thursday, October 11, 2007, at 9:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Betty’s memory to the Glenbrook Lodge Flower Garden (where Betty loved stealing flowers with her daughter) .

BONIA, Margaret Theresa (nee Hickey) – December 30, 1916 - October 9, 2007. It is with deep sadness that the Bonia family announces the passing of their beloved mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and sister after a lifetime of devotion, service and commitment to her family, church and community. She was predeceased by her husband, Jeremiah in 1984. Celebrating her extraordinary life are her nine children: Geraldine (Vince) Walsh, St. John’s, Allan (Marion) Bonia, Harricott, Jean Hull, Miami, FL, Mona (Lonz) Pearce, Sherwood Park, AB, Agnes, Montreal, Marilyn (Alex) Puksa, Barrie, ON, Patrick (Frances) Bonia, North Harbour, Margie (Roger) Dam, Peachtree City, GA and Carmel (Brian Rideout), Montreal. Nan will always be loved and cherished by her thirteen grandchildren: Brad (Kelli) Pearce, Jennifer and Jason Hull, Paul and Mike Walsh, Jean (Stephen Shaw), Stephen (Natasha), David, Carl, Padraig and Renee Bonia, Lauren Dam and Jeremy Bonia; and her four great-grandchildren: Bethany, Matthew, Janelle and Ryan. Theresa will be fondly remembered by her sister, Carmela Jamieson, St. John’s, her brother Will Hickey, O’Donnell’s and other relatives and friends. Friends are welcome to visit her late residence in North Harbour on Wednesday from 6-10 p.m., Thursday from 10 a.m. - 10 p.m. and on Friday from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial and thanksgiving will be held at Sacred Heart Church at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, October 12, 2007. Flowers gratefully declined. Donations in her memory may be made to the Sacred Heart Church, North Harbour, or to a charity of one’s choice. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Dunphy’s Funeral Home, Holyrood.

CARROLL, Sheila Ruth (Nee Kent) – Passed away peacefully at Cambridge Memorial Hospital on Sunday, October 7th, 2007 in her 64th year. Dearly loved mother of Teresa Carroll and Rick Vautour, and Alan Carroll and his wife Diana all of Brooklin. Grandmother of Jack and Max. Much loved sister of Carol Anne Kent (Doug) of Ajax, Eileen Kavanagh (Don), and Jackie Reid (Sam) all of Newfoundland. Fondly remembered by Ray Carroll of Trent River and several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her parents Jack and Rhoda Kent. A Memorial Service will be held at Memorial Chapel, Brooklin, 5295 Thickson Rd. N. Brooklin/Whitby on Saturday, October 13th, at 11:00 a.m., with interment to follow at Groveside Cemetery, Brooklin. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Canadian Mental Health Association would be appreciated by the family.
