BEST, William Berkley – Passed peacefully away in the presence of his loving family at the Golden Years Manor, Arnold’s Cove on Thursday, September 27, 2007, William Berkley Best, aged 83 years. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories, wife Evelyn; sons: David (Violet), Mount Pearl, Donald (Judy), Port Rexton and William (Joanne), Chamberlains; daughters: Rowena, Paradise and Anita (Tony), Nova Scotia; grandchildren: David (Wanda), Ottawa, Nancy (Chris), Kilbride, Michelle (Ed), Arnold’s Cove, Michael, Arnold’s Cove, Kimberley, St. John’s and Jonathan, St. John’s; great-grandchildren: Brooklyn and Jared, Ottawa; brothers: Neil (Mildred), Come By Chance and Donald (Daphne), St. John’s; sisters: Eleanor Luther, Gander and Anita Rose (George), Whitbourne; aunt, Francis Ingram, Arnold’s Cove; sister-in-law Rowena Luscombe, Ontario; brother-in-law John Roach (Dorothy), Glovertown; many nieces, nephews and friends, and special caregivers Madlyn and Carrie. Resting at St. Paul’s Anglican United Church, Come By Chance. Funeral service 2:00 p.m. Sunday, September 30, 2007 from St. Paul’s Anglican United Church, Come By Chance with interment at Come By Chance Interfaith Cemetery.

CHILVERS, Mildred (Hamlyn) – Passed peacefully away at Vancouver on September 12, 2007, in her 95th year. Formerly of St. John’s and Toronto, she was the last remaining member of the family of the late William and Julia (Chayter) Hamlyn of St. John’s. Predeceased by her husband Harry; brothers: William (and wife Adelaid), George (and wife Una), James (and wife Jessie), Eric, Hugh and her twin brother Ralph. Leaving with cherished memories her son, John Chilvers (Sheila) of Richmond Hill, ON; and daughter, Janet Chilvers (Glen Taylor) of Bowen Island, BC; four grandchildren: Erin Froese (Rob), Kevin Kerr, Allison and Scot Chilvers; two great-grandchildren: Conner and Sacha Froese. Also leaving sisters-in-law: Stella Hamlyn and Alma Hamlyn of St. John’s; as well as many nephews, nieces and cousins in the Hamlyn family. A memorial service will be held in Toronto at a date to be announced.

CLEARY, Christopher C. – September 10, 1928 - September 27, 2007 - Passed away suddenly, in the presence of his family, after a brief illness at the Carbonear General Hospital, Christopher Cleary of Cupids (formerly of Buchans), age 79 years. Predeceased by his wife Ann (nee Delaney), September 15, 1994. Leaving to mourn are his daughters: Mary (Phil Laracy), Cupids and Ann Marie, Mount Pearl; as well as other relatives and a large circle of friends, especially his brother Knights throughout NL. Chris was a former Grand Knight and founding member of the Bishop March Council, 3315 in Buchans. At the time of his passing, he was a 3rd degree member of Avalon Council, 2223, South River and a 4th degree member of Cabot Assembly, 1644, Avondale. He will be especially missed by his furry friend Toby (lovingly referred to as the Skipper) . Resting at Broughton’s Funeral Home in Brigus with visitation Saturday and Sunday 10:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m. Funeral to be held Monday, October 1, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. from St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Brigus with interment at R.C. Cemetery in Brigus. As an expression of sympathy, flowers gratefully accepted or donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or a charity of one’s choice.

DICKS, Viola Patricia – Passed peacefully away in the Health Sciences Centre on Thursday, September 27, 2007 in the presence of her son David. Viola Dicks, aged 85 years. Predeceased by her husband William Frank, 2003, son Herbert, 1968. Leaving to mourn four sons: Lloyd (Barbara), St. John’s, John (Helen), Alberta, David (Ada), Little Harbour East, Wayne (Janice), Alberta; two daughters: Rosalind Allen (Curtis), Alberta, Cathy Seaward (Mark), Little Harbour East; thirteen grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren. Also a large circle of relatives and friends. Resting at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, Little Harbour East from where the funeral service will take place on Sunday, September, 30, 2007 at 3:00 p.m. Interment at the Anglican Cemetery, Little Harbour East. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations may be made in her memory to St. Andrew’s Church Memorial Fund. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Holloway’s Funeral Home, Whitbourne.

LOPES, Darcy Lyn Kathlyne – It is with saddened hearts we announce the sudden passing of Darcy Lyn Kathlyne Lopes on September 26, 2007 at her home on Bell Island, aged 39. Predeceased by her mother, Elizabeth Buckley. Leaving to mourn her loving and devoted husband, Kenneth Byrne; her father, Doug Buckley and her brother Chris; her five children: Natasha, Krystal, Kenneth Jr., Elizabeth and Katie-Jane; her three grandchildren: Abigail, Kylie and Dakota; as well as a large circle of friends. Resting at Pendergast’s Funeral Home, Bell Island on Saturday and Sunday from 12 noon to 9 p.m. Cremation to follow. Flowers and donations are gratefully accepted.

BUTLER, Donna (nee Yarn) – Passed peacefully away at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital on Friday, Sept. 28, 2007. Donna Butler aged 55 years. Predeceased by her parents Alice and Gordon Yarn; sister: Sandra Richards. Leaving to mourn her husband Walter; children: Allen Yarn (Ashley Vanderklugt), Douglas Butler (Melissa Bennett), Andrew Butler (Samantha James); grandchildren: Madison Yarn and Brady Bennett; brother: Junior Yarn; sister Barbara Taylor (Craig); brother-in-law: John Richards; and many other relatives and friends. Resting at Barrett’s Funeral Home, 328 Hamilton Ave. on Sunday, Sept. 30 from 2-9 p.m. and Monday, Oct. 1 from 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Funeral service to take place on Tuesday, Oct. 2 at 11 a.m. from Barrett’s Chapel. Interment to follow at the Anglican Cemetery, Kenmount Road. Flowers gratefully accepted or donation can be made in Donna’s memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

SMITH, Eric Bradley – Longtime member of the Masonic and Shrine Fraternity. Passed peacefully away on Friday, Sept. 28, 2007, in the presence of his loving family. Eric Bradley Smith aged 87 years. Predeceased by his parents: Captain Frederick and Mary (Patten) Smith. Leaving to mourn his devoted wife Annie (Mills); beloved children: Gail (Alan) Bell, and Wayne (Brenda) Smith; loving grandchildren: Vanessa Bell (Mark Murphy), Martin Bell (Nadine Wall), Laura Power (Paul), Anna and Megan Smith, great-grandson: Alexander Power; and sisters: Phyllis (Nat) Rosston, Vera Bordas and Edna Carey. At Eric’s request, cremation has taken place. Resting at Barrett’s Funeral Home 328 Hamilton Ave. on Sunday, Sept. 30, 2007 from 10 a.m- 12 noon, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held from Barrett’s Chapel on Monday, Oct. 1, 2007, at 2 p.m. Interment to follow at the Anglican Cemetery, Forest Road. In lieu of flowers, donation’s may be made in Eric’s memory to the Mazol Shrines’ Children Transportation Fund.

BRODERICK, Richard F. – Passed peacefully away at his home in Grate’s Cove on Saturday, September 22, 2007, Richard F. Broderick (Retired Teacher), aged 85 years. Predeceased by his wife Paula, January, 2007. Left to mourn his daughter Patricia, also a number of nieces and nephews. Father Mike Barker conducted the funeral service on Monday, September 24 at St. Joseph’s Church, Grate’s Cove and the R.C. Cemetery, Grate’s Cove.
