SHEPHERD, Dr. Reginald S.M. - Passed peacefully away at the D.V.A. Caribou Pavillion on Saturday, June 1, 2002, Dr. Reginald Shepherd, R.C.A., LL.D., aged 78 years. From 1943-1945 Reg served with the Royal Canadian Air Force. He graduated from the Ontario College of Art in 1949 and was co-founder with Helen and director of the Newfoundland Academy of Art from 1949-1961. He studied in Holland for two years with a Royal Society of Canada Fellowship. He taught at Prince of Wales Collegiate in St. John`s from 1962-1980. During 1984-1985 his watercolour and print exhibition toured several galleries in England, and eight galleries in Ireland, opening at Garter Lane Arts Centre in Waterford, in July 1984 and was shown in Wexford, Cahir, Tralee, Galway, Limerick, Cork, and closed at the Sligo Art Gallery in February 1985. In 1985 as part of the exhibition, 12 Newfoundland Painters, Memorial University Art Gallery, St. John`s commissioned him to print a serigraph edition from Memorial University Print Portfolio. In 1986 he took part in the Memorial University Gallery 25th Anniversary Exhibition. In 1988 Reg received his degree of Doctor of Laws, Memorial University of Newfoundland and in 1990 he was elected to the Newfoundland and Labrador 'Arts Hall of Honour.' Reg is represented by paintings and serigraphs in numerous public, corporate and private collections. Leaving to mourn his wife Helen; son Scott (Sandra); grandchildren, Karen, Steven and Nancy Shepherd; brothers, Lorne (Eileen) Shepherd of Gander and Harry (Eda) Shepherd of South River; as well as other relatives and friends. Cremation has taken place. The family wil receive visitors at Carnell`s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Rd. on Sunday, June 2, 2002 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, June 3, 2002 at 2 p.m. from the Anglican Cathedral with interment to follow at the Anglican cemetery, Kenmount Road. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations in Reg`s memory may be made to the Alzheimer`s Society.

SMITH, Peter Jr. - Passed peacefully away at his residence on Saturday, June 1, 2002, Peter Smith, age 24 years. Leaving to mourn, his father, Captain Peter Smith; mother Doris (Snook) Smith; brother Gerry (Kim); loving sister and best friend Lauri Lee; niece Laura Jane and nephew Jordan; his caregivers, Rhonda Oliver, Diane Roberts and friends, Harry, Mary and Noreen Yetman, Don and Floss Glynn; Serenity Home Care Staff Geneva, Sharon, Kim, Renee, Coleen and Angela; special friends, Krista, James, Patrick and Gary Oliver; as well as friends from the Longside Club, Wheelway Bus Drivers and a large circle of other friends and relatives. Special thanks to doctors Richard Ng, Todd Alexander, Dr. Eaton, Dr. Newhook, Dr. Essaji and the Janeway staff. Resting at Barrett`s Funeral Home, 328 Hamilton Ave. from 12 noon.-10 p.m. Sunday and 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday, and on Tuesday from 10 a.m.-12 noon. Leaving to mourn his wife of 47 years, Florence; daughter Gail (Frank), granddaughters Stephanie and Mandy; daughter Shelley, grandchildren Ashley and Peter; daughter Kathy (Rod), granddaughter Kayla; son Bob (Charlene); daughter Susan (Hayward), grandsons Matthew and Jordan; also a large circle of family and friends. Resting at Bethany United Church, Swift Current. Funeral service to be held on Monday, January 27 at 2 p.m. Donations may be made to the Bethany United Church Memorial Fund.

THORNE, Maria - passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 1, 2002, at St. Patrick`s Mercy Home, after a very short stay, Maria Thorne, aged 90 years. Predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Gordon on May 17, 2002; daughters, Judy (1949) and Barbara Ann (1957); sister Lillian; and son-in-law Eliol Sooley (2001). Left with fond and loving memories, daughters, Elizabeth Thistle (Bill); Bernice Lundrigan-Sooley, Toronto; grandchildren, Maria and Geoffrey Thistle, Barbara Lundrigan-Fowler (Bill), Tom Lundrigan; great-grandchildren, Noah Lundrigan, Jacob Lundrigan-Fowler; sisters-in-law, Susie Thorne and Violet Cole (Hoyles-Escasoni); and also a large circle of other relatives and friends. Resting at Carnell`s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Rd. on Sunday and Monday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. and on Tuesday from 10 a.m.-12 noon. Leaving to mourn his special nephew Allan Branton; sisters Betty Scott (husband Scottie), their daugther Gloria and granddaugther Kristin; Madge McDonald, Joan Branton and Marg Brocklehurst (Edward); brothers Robert (Clara) and Edward of Toronto; as well as a number other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Rested at Fewer`s Funeral Home, Clarenville. Funeral services was held Friday, April 13, 2001, from St. Mary`s Anglican Church, Clarenville.

Predeceased by son, Shawn, who passed away in 1997; parents Aloysius Farrell and Laura (Giovannini); brothers Aubrey, Howard, Cecil, and Gordon; sisters Gertrude and Marguerite. Ena was married for a short time to Robert Fitzpatrick of St. Lawrence who died during World War Two. Resting at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in St. Lawrence. Funeral Monday, June 3, at 10 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Church with interment to follow at Mount Cecilia cemetery. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations in her name may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
