SHEPHERD, Dr. Reginald S.M. - Passed peacefully away at the D.V.A. Caribou Pavillion on Saturday, June 1, 2002, Dr. Reginald Shepherd, R.C.A., LL.D., aged 78 years. From 1943-1945 Reg served with the Royal Canadian Air Force. He graduated from the Ontario College of Art in 1949 and was co-founder with Helen and director of the Newfoundland Academy of Art from 1949-1961. He studied in Holland for two years with a Royal Society of Canada Fellowship. He taught at Prince of Wales Collegiate in St. John`s from 1962-1980. During 1984-1985 his watercolour and print exhibition toured several galleries in England, and eight galleries in Ireland, opening at Garter Lane Arts Centre in Waterford, in July 1984 and was shown in Wexford, Cahir, Tralee, Galway, Limerick, Cork, and closed at the Sligo Art Gallery in February 1985. In 1985 as part of the exhibition, 12 Newfoundland Painters, Memorial University Art Gallery, St. John`s commissioned him to print a serigraph edition from Memorial University Print Portfolio. In 1986 he took part in the Memorial University Gallery 25th Anniversary Exhibition. In 1988 Reg received his degree of Doctor of Laws, Memorial University of Newfoundland and in 1990 he was elected to the Newfoundland and Labrador 'Arts Hall of Honour.' Reg is represented by paintings and serigraphs in numerous public, corporate and private collections. Leaving to mourn his wife Helen; son Scott (Sandra); grandchildren, Karen, Steven and Nancy Shepherd; brothers, Lorne (Eileen) Shepherd of Gander and Harry (Eda) Shepherd of South River; as well as other relatives and friends. Cremation has taken place. The family wil receive visitors at Carnell`s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Rd. on Sunday, June 2, 2002 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, June 3, 2002 at 2 p.m. from the Anglican Cathedral with interment to follow at the Anglican cemetery, Kenmount Road.
