ALCOCK, Harry Stuart - 1914 - 2002. Calgary, Alberta. After a wonderful life of 88 years, Harry Stuart Alcock slipped away on October 10th from complications due to pneumonia to be reunited with his beloved Daphne. Born May 2nd, 1914 in St. John`s, Newfoundland, he spent the early years of his life first in St. John`s and then Corner Brook. His formal education took place at the Prince of Wales College where he majored in Commerce and Finance. While in College he starred in hockey, soccer and was a member of the Guards Championship Soccer team. As a young CGA he was employed by the Corner Brook West Town Council as a Financial Clerk and later became Manager of Water and Sewerage Town Planning. Later he combined his sports and finance abilities to be instrumental in the creation of Humber Gardens Arena in Corner Brook, and as well was manager of the city`s all star hockey teams. A serendipitous meeting during his college days led to the love of his life. Daphne (nee Snelgrove of Catalina) married Harry August 5, 1940. Their union produced 3 fine sons: Gary, Graham and Bryan. In 1957, they left the island for Toronto to begin new chapters. There Harry worked with the Scarborough Public Utilities as Chief Accountant until his retirement in 1978. He and Daphne then retired to Fort Lauderdale to live the life of snowbirds. Sadly, in 1993 Harry lost his soul mate and best friend, Daphne, after 54 glorious years of marriage. Then, the tragic loss of Graham two years later who 'slipped the surly bonds of earth to dance the skies on laughter silvered wings' began to take its toll and his health declined. So in 1999, he moved to Calgary to be closer to family. Harry touched many people in his 88 years. His memory will life on in friends and family. 'Pops' is loved and missed especially by grandchildren: David and Jazz (Bryan and Jane) of Calgary, Alberta, Jenny, Sarah and Jay (Graham and Gail) of Phoenix, AZ and Kathy of Toronto (Rev. Gary and Harriet of Nova Scotia). Even though the pain is heavy for us now we take comfort in knowing that 'this too shall pass.' A private Memorial Service took place Friday, October 18, 2002 in Calgary. Memorial Services will take place again in June 2003 in St. John`s and Corner Brook, Newfoundland (interment). If desired, donations may be made to a charity of your choice. McInnis & Holloway Funeral Homes, 14441 Bannister Rd. S.E.
