Leaving to mourn his wife Susan; son Gary; daughter Beverley (Mario); step-children, Emma (Leo), Bob (Brenda), Maurice (Beth); 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; brother, Charlie Richards (Bea); sisters, Jean Tucker (Jim), Leona Lambe (Rodger), Stella Stanford (Ron), Mildred Cooper; brother-in-law Robert Pressley; sister-in-law Violet Richards; best friend Harry Lacey; and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. CARTER, Stephen Sr. - October 26, 1900 to March 30, 2003. It is with great sadness the family of Steve Carter announces the passing of a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather at Hoyles-Escasoni Complex formerly of Witless Bay at the age of 102. Surrounded by his loving family he entered into eternal rest, Sunday, March 30. Predeceased by his wife of 71 years, Ethel, February 28, 1998. Lovingly remembered by his son Steve (Ita) his daughters Catherine (Harold), Loretta (Leonard), Genevieve (Clar), Gabe and Philomena, his 41 grandchildren, 59 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren, his many friends and wonderful care givers at Hoyles Escasoni. COATES, Reginald James - Passed peacefully away on Sunday, March 30, 2003 at the Hoyles-Escasoni Complex, Reginald James Coates in his 86th year. Predeceased by son Richard in 1996; sisters Madge Gardner and Muriel Dolomount; two brothers: Arthur and William. Left with fond and loving memories his wife Dorothy (nee Wiseman). Also left to mourn Marvin in Halifax, Phyllis (Gary) French, Robert (Helen) in British Columbia, Gail (Tony) Doyle; and stepchildren: John (Phyllis) Stanley, Valerie (Harris) Porter in Port de Grave, Merie Stanley and Wallace (Miyoko) Stanley; 20 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; one brother Winston (Emma) in Upper Gullies; sister-in-law Florence Coates; many nieces and nephews and a large circle of friends. Reginald was an avid reader and outdoorsman. After graduating from teachers college he taught school in Torbay and Paradise. During World War II he worked in Argentia. After the war he began work at the Waterford Hospital where he worked for 30 years until his retirement at the age of 60 and he has enjoyed a life correspondence with friends and doing crosswords. During his life he wrote three books, the last of which is currently going to print. Special thanks to the staff of the Hoyles Home, East 2. Resting at Barrett`s Funeral Home, 328 Hamilton Avenue from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday and from 10 a.m.-12 noon on Wednesday. Funeral services 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 2, 2003 from Barrett`s Chapel. Interment to follow at the Anglican cemetery, Kenmount Road. YARD, Major Arthur Joseph - 88, husband of the late Bridget Ann Yard, died Friday March 28, 2003 at his home. He was born at Cape Broyle, Newfoundland June 3, 1914 and came to America in December of 1936. Mr. Yard served in the Merchant Marine from 1936-1941 and participated in the North Atlantic Run from America to Europe. When America became involved in the war, he joined the U.S. Army at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina and was assigned to the 60th Infantry Regiment, 9th Division. He was honorably discharged in 1946. He was later called to active duty at the outbreak of the Korean War in 1950, serving during the summer and winter campaigns 1951-1952. Major Yard retired from the Army at Ft. Eustis, Va., in June 1966. He then took a position with the Department of the Army as a Marine Maintenance Supervisor of Equipment assigned to Vietnam. He served in that capacity until the end of the Vietnam War. Major Yard is a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, and former member of the Masters Mates and Pilots Association. He was a member of St. Jerome Catholic Church in Newport News, Va. One more old soldier from World War II, Korea, and St. John`s, Newfoundland has been called home. Major Yard is survived by several nieces and nephews; and special friend and care giver, Sonja S. Rochelle. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m., Tuesday at Weymouth Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Wednesday, April 2, 2003 at St. Jerome Catholic Church by the Rev. Joseph Majewski. Interment with full military honors will be in Peninsula Memorial Park, Newport News, Va. Arrangements are with Weymouth Funeral Home, 12746 Nettles Dr., Newport News, VA. 23606.

KANE, Thomas J. - Passed peacefully away on April 8, 2003 at St. Clare`s Mercy Hospital, after a short but courageous battle with cancer, Tom Kane, aged 64 years. Predeceased by his loving daughter Roma on March 17, 1999. Leaving to mourn long time companion and best friend Anne, son Tom (Linda); Daughters: Pamela and Cheryl-Anne; Grandchildren: Amie, Danielle, Christopher, Gabrielle, Lindsey and Kimberley. Cremation has taken place at his request. Visitation to take place on Wednesday, April 9, 2003 from 7 pm - 10 pm at Caul`s Funeral Home, LeMarchant Rd. Funeral Service to take place on Thursday, April 10 at 10 am from Caul`s Chapel. In lieu of flowers donations greatly appreciated on behalf of NL Cancer Society or Janeway Children`s Wish Foundation.
