Albert B. Miller
82, Sydney River
Albert B. Miller, 82, of MacRae Avenue, Sydney River, passed away peacefully at home, Tuesday, March 7, 2000.
Born in Glace Bay, he was a son of the late Lebious and Vanava (Langille) Miller.
Albert served overseas in the Second World War and was a retired steelworker. He was a member of Sydney River United Church and also the Sydney Men’s Club and the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 151, East Bay.
He is survived by his wife, Agnes (MacMillan); daughter, Margaret, British Columbia; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sister, Viola MacLeod, Glace Bay and brothers, Gordon and Titus, Glace Bay.
Albert was predeceased by his sister, Maude Kuta, brother, William and a grandson.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Friday, March 10 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Alan McIntosh officiating. Interment at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Memorials may be made to a charity of choice.
Katheryn Florence Poole
93, Whycocomagh
Katheryn Florence Poole, 93, of Whycocomagh, died Tuesday, March 7, 2000, in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Dunakin, Inverness County, she was the daughter of the late Neil A. and Flora Ann (MacKinnon) MacLellan.
She was a retired school teacher and a member of Stewart United Church, Whycocomagh; a life member of Stewart UCW and a former Sunday school teacher for many years.
Surviving are daughter, Margaret Ann (Rannie) MacDonald, Beaconsfield, Que.; sons, Edward D. (Pat), Truro, Nelson (Mae), Whycocomagh; brother, John A. MacLellan, Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Eddy Poole and a sister in infancy.
Visitation 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. today (Thursday) in the Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Whycocomagh. Funeral service 11 a.m. Friday in the Stewart United Church with Rev. Anne McKnight officiating. Burial in Stewartdale Cemetery.

Blossom May Denny
Glace Bay
Blossom May Denny, 89, of 50 Peel St., Glace Bay, passed away Thursday, March 9, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Bridgewater, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Matilda (Weagle) Aulenback.
She was a member of Newsom United Church, Glace Bay and a former member of the Salvation Army, Bridgewater. Blossom was a foster mother to numerous children. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Surviving are daughter, Doreen (Mrs. James McPhee), Glace Bay; sons, William “Bill” (Ethel) and Henry Talbot (Jane), both of Glace Bay, 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Jesse William in 1951, four brothers, three sisters and foster daughter, Edith.
Visitation for the late Mrs. Denny will be held 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Friday, March 19, 2000 at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will held Saturday at 2 p.m. in Newsom United Church, Glace Bay with Rev. Bill Matthews officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

F. Joseph (Joe) Gillis
81, Glace Bay
F. Joseph (Joe) Gillis, 81, of 117 South St., Glace Bay, passed peacefully away Thursday, March 9, 2000, convalescing from hip surgery at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Joseph M. Gillis and Gertrude (Prendergast) Gillis.
Joe worked in the mining industry for many years beginning in 1938 as a mine surveyor’s helper, later as deputy mine manager and as ventilation technologist and safety official under the Cape Breton Development Corp. He served as a member of the (Labour) Adjustment Board during his years with Cape Breton Development Corp. and after his retirement as well.
He was a member of the Glace Bay Town Council for many years serving seven years as deputy mayor until his retirement. Joe served for several years as a director of the Coady Credit Union and was a member of the Glace Bay Community Hospital Board and the former St. Joseph’s Hospital Board.
He was an original member of the Cape Breton chapter of the Canadian Diabetic Association and served a term with the Glace Bay Miner’s Museum Board. Joe was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of Holy Cross Parish.
He is survived by his wife, Florence (MacDonald); sons, Donnie and Frank (Irene), both of Glace Bay; three grandchildren, Caelin, Bhreagh and Cale. Also surviving are sisters, Mary Barton (Fred), Dartmouth and Edna Oliver (Albert), Sackville and brother, Gerald (Tillie), Albuquerque, New Mexico.
He was predeceased by a third child who died in infancy.
Visitation will be held today (Friday) 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be celebrated Saturday, 11 a.m. in Holy Cross Church, Glace Bay, with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. Cremation to follow. Interment will take place at a later date.
The family would ask that any memorials be made to the Canadian Diabetic Association or the Holy Cross Parish Building Fund.
Members of the KOC, Glace Bay, are asked to assemble at the funeral home tonight (Friday) at 7:30 p.m.
Felix Richard Francis LeBlanc
52, Beaver Cove
Felix Richard Francis LeBlanc, 52, of Beaver Cove, died Thursday, March 9, 2000, at home.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was the son of the late John T. and Leocadia (MacIsaac) LeBlanc.
He was a member of St. Andrew’s Parish, Boisdale. He was employed with the Cape Breton Development Corp. until his retirement. Felix was active in community events and was an avid fisherman and hunter. He also enjoyed golfing.
He is survived by his children, Nancy (Floyd), Dartmouth and Andy (Diane), Sydney Mines; his grandchildren, Gregory and Benjermin. Also surviving are sisters, Verna (Jim) Reid, Sandra (Leonard) Porter, Ontario, Geraldine Downey, New York, Judy (Francis) Shebib, Joan (Robert) Shebib, North Sydney, Alanna (Art) Vickers, Susan (Monty) Bradley, Sydney Mines; brothers, Derek, Manitoba, Michael, Halifax, Kenny (Delma), Middleton, Danny, Ontario and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents he was predeceased by brothers, Blair and Jackie.
There will be no visitation. A memorial mass will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in Immaculate Conception Church with the Rev. Gerald Dunphy officiating. Burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Patrick J. MacLean
77, Sydney Mines
Patrick J. MacLean, 77, of 71 Fraser Ave., Sydney Mines, died Thursday, March 9, 2000, at home.
Born in North Sydney, he was the son of the late Hector and Catherine (Nicholson) MacLean.
He was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish. He received his education at St. Joseph’s School, North Sydney and St. F.X. University, Antigonish. He was employed at Point Edward Naval Base and later as a teacher in Bras d’Or and in Dr. T.L. Sullivan Junior High where he served as vice principal. Pat was an avid bowler and Toronto Maple Leafs and New York Yankees fan. He was a member of Santa Maria Council 2024, Knights of Columbus, Sydney Mines.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret MacPherson; his twin sons, Donald (Kim) and Michael (Marie Claude), Toronto; his grandchildren, Tyler, Melina and Yanick; his sister, Mary (MacLean) Gillis and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Rannie, George and Donnie.
Visitation Saturday 7-9 p.m. and Sunday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. The funeral will take place Monday at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church with Rev. Gerald Dunphy officiating. Burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
