Evelyn Ayre
85, Sydney
Evelyn Ayre, 85, of Shore Road, Sydney, passed away at home Monday, March 20, 2000, surrounded by her family.
Evelyn was the last member her immediate family.
Born in Whitney Pier, she was a daughter of the late Michael and Catherine (Dwyer) Brophy. She was a member of St. Alban’s Anglican Parish.
Evelyn is survived by two daughters, Kaye (John) Ellis, England and Mary (Skippy) Atkinson, Donkin; two sons, Edward (Phonse), St. Catharines, Ont. and Allan (Ann), Sydney; 19 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two daughters-in-law, Marie, Framboise and Geraldine, Sydney.
Evelyn was predeceased by her husband, William (Bill) Ayre, son, William (Billie), two grandchildren, David and Shawn, three brothers, Alan, Vince and William (Billie), three sisters, Isabel, Stella and Lizzie.
There will be no visitation by request. A memorial service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Alban’s Church with Rev. Doug Chard officiating. Interment in Eastmount Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Palliative Care, St. Alban’s Church, or to a charity of choice.

Marjorie Crabtree
Sydney
E. Marjorie Crabtree, of Margaree and 438 South Bentinck St., passed away peacefully, after a short illness, on Sunday morning, March 19, 2000, in Sydney at the Cape Breton Healthcare Centre under the inspired care of the Palliative Care Service.
She was born in Toronto in 1921, the daughter of the late Marjorie Dean (Hardy) Morse and T.W. Morse, and grand-daughter of William Dean, vice-president of T. Eaton Co.
She attended Havergal and Whitby Ladies’ Colleges and was a graduate of the University of Toronto. She was a WREN during the Second World War and served in Toronto and Halifax and later attended the IDHEC Film School in Paris. She worked at Crawley Films in Ottawa in the late 40s where she met her husband Grant, director and cinematographer.
Besides her devoted husband of 50 years, she leaves her two daughters, Lauren (Kenzie MacNeil) and Carla Kalberlah, Sydney; and eight loving grandchildren, Caitriana, Christie, Mary Dean and Anna MacNeil, Kyle, Vanessa, Andrea and Ryan Tingley and one sister, Rosemary Keim, Streetsville, Ont.
She was predeceased by two brothers, George and John.
She was a member of Christ Church Parish, Sydney.
Coming from a family known for its remarkable women, Marjorie will be particularly remembered for her love of the arts and life-long learning, her passion for books and travel and the outdoors. She was an active partner in her husband’s long career in film-making and shared in his love for the Gatineau Hills and Cape Breton. Most of all her family will miss her free spirit.
There will be no visitation. A memorial service is planned for Ottawa in the spring. Family burial later.

John Michael Hearn Sr.
91, Sydney
John Michael Hearn Sr., 91, of 114 Kennedy Ave., formerly of Bentinck Street, Sydney, passed away Monday, March 20, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, he was the elder son of the late Patrick and Annie (Cleary) Hearn.
He was a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Parish, Sydney.
A respected member of the Sydney business community since 1930, John initially operated a taxi business and then became a hotel operator, running the Royal Hotel on the Esplanade for over 30 years, finally retiring in 1974.
He is survived by one son, John M. Jr. (Debbie), Sydney, with whom he resided; one sister, Mrs. Margaret Brackett, Halifax; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife, the former Catherine Boucher, a son, Patrick Charles, a granddaughter, Danielle, seven sisters and a brother.
The late Mr. Hearn will have no visitation as cremation has taken place.
Funeral mass will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday in Sacred Heart Church, with the Rev. A. O’Connor officiating. Interment in Holy Cross Cemetery, Sydney.

Catherine MacDonald
89, Glace Bay
Catherine MacDonald, 89, of 10 Howe St., Glace Bay, passed away Sunday, March 19, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late James and Jane (Murray) MacDonald.
Catherine was an adherent of Warden United Church, Glace Bay. She was a former member of the Silver Bells and the Golden Circle of Glace Bay. Catherine loved to travel and was an avid 45 card and bingo player. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Surviving is a daughter, Edith “Edie” (Mrs. Edward Ball), Glace Bay, (with whom she resided).
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by sisters, Mamie (Mrs. Edward Baird) and Jean (Mrs. Mark Gardiner), brothers, John (Jack) and Malcolm (Comet) MacDonald, stepfather, Simon Harte and half-brothers, Jim and Joe Harte.
Visitation for the late Catherine MacDonald will be held today (Tuesday) 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be Wednesday at 4 p.m. both in V.J. McGillvray Funeral Home and Chapel, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay, Rev. Bill Matthews will be officiating.
Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
Donations in Catherine’s memory to a charity of choice are suggested as an expression of sympathy.
Christian Andrew Joseph Paul
3, Eskasoni
Christian Andrew Joseph Paul, 3 years old, of 86 Shore Rd., Eskasoni, passed away, Saturday, March 18, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of Ruby Paul and Robert Joseph Lewis of Eskasoni.
He was a member of Holy Family Parish, Eskasoni.
Surviving are maternal grandparents, Edward Paul and Frances (John MacLellan) Paul-Dennis, paternal grandmother, Annette Marie Lewis, all of Eskasoni; four sisters, Francine Kelly Paul, Nadine Kelsey Marie Paul, Kirstin Dawn Marie Lewis, all of Eskasoni, Savannah Marie Johnson, Chapel Island; two brothers, Everette Stephen Joseph Paul and Hugh Edward Joseph Paul, both of Eskasoni; aunt, Stephanie Paul, Eskasoni; Godparents, Walter Patrick and Nicole Denny, Eskasoni.
Predeceased by one sister, Coleen Angela Paul in infancy.
Visitation will be held after 7 p.m. today at the family residence, 86 Shore Rd., Eskasoni. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Holy Family Church, Eskasoni, with Fr. Robert McNeil officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery.
Donations may be made to the IWK or the Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada.

Walter Douglas Shanks
86, Sydney
Walter Douglas Shanks, 86, of Marlborough Drive, Sydney, passed away at the QEII Complex, Halifax, on Sunday, March 19, 2000.
Born in Fredericton, N.B., he was a son of the late Walter Douglas and Nellie (Cole) Shank.
Walter was a veteran of the Second World War.
He was a retired Insurance Agent and a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 19, North Sydney.
He is survived by daughters, Beverley Vickery, Dartmouth, Wendy (Bill) MacRae, Port Hawkesbury, Patricia Elizabeth (Ken) Miller, Sydney, Joan Marie Shanks, Sydney, and Janet Christine (Kevin) Boudreau, Cole Harbour; sons, Douglas, Halifax and Mike, Texas; sister, Eileen Shank, Fredericton, N.B.; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Walter was predeceased by his wife, Mabel in 1991, a brother, George.
There will be no visitation.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. A memorial service will be held in the chapel Thursday 2 p.m., with Rev. Willis Henderson officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery.
